Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

North Face and Mountain Hardware do a better job of marketing their tents as 'extreme', but Sierra Designs ?hands down? makes a better tent.

The DNA for this particular tent originated 30 years ago in the Stretch Dome. They've been perfecting ever since.

I've used Sierra Designs tents on 5 continents and in every condition you can imagine. Not once have I ever been failed. (And when you are in a howling windstorm in zero degree temps ?reliability is a matter of life and death.)

Make sure you look at the size. Sierra Designs tents seem to feel a little more roomy than other tents. You may not need a 3-person, when a 2-person will do.

Mountain Hardware is a good brand and this tent has been out for awhile. It is quite possible that the failure I experienced was an isolated problem. Having said that......

This past summer, I spent 5 weeks in Pakistan on the Baltoro Glacier and surrounding areas. Three days in, we had a brief rain. The tent leaked a bit and we forgot about it. Two weeks into the trip, we had a full day of rain. The tent was an absolute failure. QUARTS of water came through the tent. Water + down sleeping bags + many miles from home = major problem. We had to cut holes through the bottom of the tent in order to let all the water out. If not, our bags would have weighed 30 pounds and been useless. As it was, all of our gear was soaked and it took the next week of trekking to finally dry everything out. In the meantime, we slept in the cheap Chinese cook tent......

Mountain Hardware is a good brand, but I will NEVER NEVER buy another one of their tents.

Backcountry was amazing ?and took the return back without a problem. Bad tent, but a great experience with backcountry.com

Western Mountaineering makes sleeping bags, and not much else. THIS is what they do – they make the world's best sleeping bags.

If you want the absolute warmest bag on the planet, THIS is the bag to buy. Other manufacturers make "-40" bags, but no one packs as much down into their bags as Western Mountaineering. They cost a bit more, but you're paying for more down. More down = warmer bag.
