I had last year's model of the R?ldal and this year's model fixed last year's issues while keeping all of its good qualities.
The things I love about this jacket are the cut, the light but warm insulation, the face fabric, and the overall style. I primarily wear this jacket skiing, and it is absolutely brilliant! I have been on slopes in windy, cold conditions (-12 deg C), as well as more mild conditions (0 deg C) and in both cases I was so happy to have this jacket.
Prior to owning this jacket, I went with a hard shell, mid-layer combo, but I love this jacket so much more. The insulation allows me to wear just a baselayer on warmer days, and on colder days add a mid-layer. The length and hood with high collar provide wonderful protection in the wind, while pit zips make it possible to dump excess heat. Pretty much anything I could think of, this jacket has: fleece-lined pockets, goggle wipe, key card pocket, powder skirt, fleece chin guard, helmet-compatible hood, drawstring hem, hand gators, long length (I'm tall), long sleeves (I'm tall)...I honestly can't think of a thing I don't like.

I don't say this lightly, but this jacket is pretty much perfect. And tasty red (pretty close to orange) is a requirement for people who spend any time in the backcountry, in my opinion.

This is one snazzy looking jacket (not that any of us hardcore outdoor-type people care about such things). Seriously though, look at how cool beardy looks!

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I think that this jacket is just way too fussy. It is heavy and sack-like (freeride fit), and just not at all what I would appreciate in this type of jacket. The Rldal for this year is a move in the right direction in my opinion. They got rid of the goofy double lapel and fussy removable hood with the flaps that whack you in the face when they aren't snapped shut with the hood up. I will be returning this in favor of this year's model or a slimmer fitting Arc'terryx jacket shell to accompany my beloved Atom LT.

Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am so much in love with this little jacket. There is nothing that I would improve. It is light, comfy, warm down to zero (and beyond?), water resistant, windproof (mostly), and just well made. I am tall and rather slim, so the fit is great too. I would agree with several other users, this is my go-to jacket. Cool days. Cold days. Rainy. Dry. It just seems to be pretty much the quiver of one. Good, good stuff.
