Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
Fit: True to size

I love Vasque boots and running shoes and so anticipated the arrival of this boot with excitement. The softshell idea is brilliant, Out Dry is amazing material, but the design of the boot on the lateral ankle area is flawed - and ended up jabbing me in the ankle and causing irritation. If they smooth this out and reduce the amount of material and layers in the lateral ankle, this will be a great boot.

I purchased these shoes in early March. I live in Northern Wisconsin. I wore these on snow covered roads, snow covered trails, slushy, muddy forest roads. I also snowshoed in them with a lightweight gaiter. One icy week I screwed ice spikes into the soles and ran on slippery, cruddy, icy trails. In all these conditions the shoes excelled. My feet stayed warm and dry and the traction was superb. They are one of the most versatile shoes I have ever tried. We had winter conditions until the first week in May, so they saw plenty of miles.

I have been wearing Montrail Trail Running Shoes for over 10 years and have been very happy, but the last two pairs have shown shoddy workmanship and I am afraid they have lost me as a customer. The Badrock OutDry had a 70 mm height in the outside ankle area on the left shoe and a 60 mm height on the right shoe - really bad craftsmanship. The sole is well designed with super traction and the Outdry is an amazing warm and dry fabric, but if Montrail doesn't improve their quality of assembly, it is all for naught.

Super warm and dry - comfortable in 5 degree runs in snow. Grip is excellent. However, Montrail needs to improve the upper design, there was an extra fold of the upper fabric that was irritating to my foot. The Outdry upper is more substantial and requires a simpler upper (less overlays) and more attention to good sewing. When this is accomplished it will the best winter running shoe available .

Vasque knows how to make great boots. The soles provide superb traction on snow/ice/crust. I walk on snowy trails, snowshoe, and ride my winter bike with these. The ankle area is well constructed and very warm. The boot could be improved with a heat retaining/reflecting and or wool insole. More insulation in the toe area would help, too, especially for riding a winter bike or snowshoeing.
