I was looking for a pack for weekend mountaineering pack that would double as a summit pack. Who wants to take two packs up a mountain? It was between the Osprey Ceres and the Granite Great Alpine Light. The ability of the Ceres to carry my snowboard (for faster/adrenalized descents) was the deciding factor. With its compression straps, the Ceres carries my board and can also cinch down when used for carrying smaller loads. But at 50 liters (2800cu inch), it can haul a pretty decent sized load. The harness is really comfortable but firm enough to provide stability. It has enough straps and pockets to carry two ice axes plus Leki sticks and a tent (it actually fit in the huge front pocket/shovel pouch!).
The downside: The addition of a daisy-chain would be great. Plus, the gear straps on the bottom are too short even to fit around an ultra-lite thermarest. I'm planning on having these two items upgraded (if anyone knows of a good place, pls let me know!)
Pro's: Carries small or large loads very comfortably.
Cons: Lack of daisy chain and bottom gear loops too short. That's why I couldn't give five stars.
