These definatley serve their purpose. After the first few miles, you forget you're wearing them. Then about 7 miles in, you remember due to minor chafing on the backside of your knees. However, if you want great knee and upper-shin protection on the downhills, these are great. I fell and sliced the side of the knee guard and definately protected soft tissue. They stay in place after miles of riding which is important because you want them in place for the unexpected falls. I do wish I had the full length version though. After nine stiches at the base of my shin, these obviously provided no protection due to their Shorty nature. I guess, I would say, if you're going to wear this type of protection you should get the full length version. Or, just don't fall...but where's the fun in that!
