I bought two of the Columbia/Arcadia Rain jackets -- one for myself and one for my teen daughter -- for a trip to Costa Rica. I also bought a Sierra Designs Hurricane rain jacket, but ended up returning the Sierra product because it felt like a stiff plastic bag. The Columbia/Arcadia rain jacket feels flexible and breathable. There are no armpit vents, but the jackets seem breathable enough that I'm hoping we won't need them. My daughter put hers on and wore it around the house for quite awhile. (It's just warming up where we live and the A/C is set to 76 to give you an idea of the temperature she was using it in.) She said it felt cozy and comfortable. The hood has a small "visor"extension that can be flipped down and looks like it will help if rain is getting in your face. I also look forward to using the jacket as a waterproof shell for the few times I go skiing over the holidays. I'm 5'4" and 118 and ordered the small. It felt a little big, but I think the XS might have been too tight in the armpits. The size S allows me to layer a North Face lightweight down jacket underneath and have plenty of mobility. I really hope this jacket performs in the rain like other reviewers have experienced because it's perfect so far--great product, plenty of colors, great price and quick shipping.

I bought this jacket for my 10-yr-old son to use on a trip to Costa Rica. We don't normally do rain because we live in the Southwest, so this is a new concept for us! It helped to see an earlier review that said another little boy had used this jacket in Costa Rica and it worked well. We haven't tried it yet, but the jacket looks like it will be great. It is not stiff, (no plastic feel at all), great colors, ample hood (but not so much he won't be able to see) and the hood has a small strip inside that is elasticized that looks like it will keep rain from really flying in. We ordered a size M (10/12) and it is a little large/baggy and sleeves maybe a touch too long, but he is on the smaller side. It will still work and give some growing room. He usually wears 8/10.

The cut and color was very nice. I also liked the waterproof and breathability rating, but upon trying, it felt like the fabric wouldn't really breathe at all, which was important because i was buying the jacket for my 10-yr-old son to use on a trip to Costa Rica. We didn't really try it, so I can't say for sure. But, we returned this coat because of the plastic feeling and kept the North Face Resolve Jacket.

I was looking for hiking shorts for a trip to Costa Rica and to use in my usual stomping grounds of Utah and Colorado. Loved the 2-day shipping from Backcountry. I'm 5'4" and 118: the size 4 was uncomfortably snug and the size 6 too big. I can usually wear a 6 petite and, if not available, a regular 4. But in this particular style short, a 6 petite would have been great, but I didn't see these shorts in petite sizes. The fabric was cotton-like with stretch. They seemed sturdy, but light at the same time and had bunches of cool pockets. Nice colors, too. (I liked the charcoal, black and even the brighter splash color) The waist fit well on these shorts without any gapping. Besides needing petite sizing in this short, I thought the short was cut a little "square"-- but mostly my body type can't handle square cut because I have shorter legs. Besides needing petite sizing, everything else about these shorts is fantastic.
