5 5

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Well I felt a little foolish dropping forty bones for two pairs of socks, but at the rate I wear through smartwool I figured I'd see what all the rage is about. I picked up these thin guys for my race boots and the thick padded ones for touring. So far, so good. Not noticeably warmer/drier than my other favorite socks, but I can tell they are quality. If they last multiple seasons the value is there and at this point I see no reason why they shouldn't.

Great Value Shell
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times

Well I've taken this shell out a couple of times now so here's my take. For the price, it's a great piece to have in your pack. It has the essentials and nothing more which for me is pit zips, a hood, and two pockets in the front. The fit seals the deal. I'm 6'5" and 205lbs so I have a tall athletic build. The XL fits my arms length nicely and the torso is cut for length rather than girth so I don't have a sails worth of fabric in my mid section like some brands. Anyways, the no frills nature means it nice and light and I can go into the backcountry with a base layer, a down sweater, and this shell in the pack in case wind/weather moves in. I've taken it touring a few times and it's been great; waterproof, wind resistant, easy venting and the hood fits over my helmet fine. I also use this in bounds too and it's held up great there as well. It even takes the abuse of brushing against GS gates at race speed. In summary: killer shell for the value, why pay more for pata-gucci or others when this guy does the job and does it well. (Picture: me in the green Stash hanging with Mr. Plake. not the greatest pic, but Glen Plake)
