David's Bio

I'm an outgoing hiker, runner and mountain biker from upstate NY. I'm also a member and volunteer with the NY/NJ trial conference. To pay the bills I'm an Architect, but at 4pm you can be sure I've got a plan to see some new trail on one of my many maps. I love to challenge myself. If there's a blizzard comming you can be sure I'm shoeing to the summit of Schunemunk to camp out in it.

I do a LOT of hiking (3 to 4 days a week) mainly in rocky mountainous terrain. I've tried a lot of hiking shoes but the Chameleon Hex is my shoe of choice hands down above all others. It's super light weight, has a very flexible sole, excellent tread that sticks like glue to rocks, logs and trail, and breathes like no other shoe I've owned. I found that there's very little to no break in time with them. They're unbelievably comfortable. They aren't waterproof like the Chameleon ISO but I wouldn't trade the breathability of the hex for it. I wasn't sure about the draw string feature at first but the shoe literally fits like a glove. The only time I even crank down on the draw string is when I'm hiking. Wearing it casually you wouln't even need to. I just bought my second pair for the upcomming spring / summer. If you're an agile, quick paced explorer that wants comfort this is the best of the best!

I really liked the performance of my Chameleon hex's during the warm hiking months. So when winter came around I decided to stick with Merrell and I bought the thermo 6 boot. Overall it's exactly what I wanted and expected... very light weight, waterproof, great traction (exceptionally poor on ice though), and extremely comfortable for a mid height boot. One complaint... the eyelets on the lower portion of the shoe are nylon. I tore one out the 3rd time I laced them up. It would be better if they were all metal and not just the top 2
