I was looking for a boot in normal winter conditions - snow, slush and ice in which I didn't need the hardcore sorels. This boot fits the bill. The fit is true to size, and not the typical Merrell that are for super wide feet. I have a low profile foot (bony) with narrow heel and average forefoot. I wear 11 in shoes, 11.5 in Asics and usually 11.5 in most boot. I ordered an 11 and there's enough room in the toe and the width is perfect for Superfeet insole and thick socks. I tried on the Merrell Decora Chant, but it was too wide on top of my foot, and b/c of that my heel was slipping up too much. The Chant would be great for someone with an average to big foot profile and who has wide foot.
The only negative that I foresee is the gusseted tongue is only for the top of the foot vs the entire tongue. But, with the lacing system, I think that I can tighten it enough not to have snow/slush/water seeping in. Also, the tongue is wider than most so, there seems to be sufficient coverage evern where the gusset stops. Once I really test it out, I'll give an update.
