Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: True to size

I bought this coat for my teenage son in Nov 2012. He likes the coat - it's plenty warm for our Boston winters. But the zipper has already broken and we're just at the beginning of the second winter with this jacket. So I've contacted TNF about a warranty repair. Hopefully he won't be without a suitable jacket for all of January! FAIL on the part of TNF. The zipper is way below a reasonable spec.

RAB really got this one right. The eVent fabric sheds water really well, and the high-loft down is very warm. I can toss this on over a light shirt and walk comfortably around when the temp is in the 20's. I add another layer underneath when it's colder than that. i recently walked around in 9 deg F weather (windy, too) and I was comfortable. he main zipper was a bit tricky at first, but now I have little trouble with it. It likely was because the UK standard is reverse from the US.

I had high hopes when I unboxed my new Mountain Hardwear Downtown Parka this evening. Nice fabric, looks good. Fits well. So I pulled i on and went for a short walk (it's 25 deg F out). What? My arms were cold! How could this be? It's a winter parka with down fill, for crying out loud! So back to the house. I pulled the sleeved inside out and discovered that the baffles are hugs and they are mostly devoid of down. So back to Backcounry.

I'm sure that Mountain Hardwear is saving a lot on labor by outsourcing manufacturing to China. The problem is that the product is junk. It's likely that the goose down is actually duck feathers. Never again. I will never order another Mountain Hardwear product!
