I recently picked up the 2012 Kestrel 32 and 38. Sometimes using a panel-loader is easier, but I got the 38 for when I'm carrying dayhike gear for the kids. I've always liked the Kestrel series but I think the 2012 version is even better than the previous versions. The pack seems true to its stated size, the hip belt pockets can be open/closed with one hand, the top lid pocket is generous, and the harness is extremely comfortable.

The build quality seems excellent; very sturdy pack.

I'll use this for dayhikes with the family where I'm carrying everything, day trips to the beach, and traveling (should be good for carry-on unless completely stuffed).

I recently got the 2012 version of the Kestrel 32 and am very impressed. I've only used it on a short hike so far but it carries very well; better than the 2009 version for me.

While the older version of the pack didn't seem fragile at all, this one feels even sturdier. Very good build quality. The hip belt pockets can be open closed with one hand.

There's plenty of room for gear for a full dayhike and will fit as carry-on if using it for traveling. I'm very happy I picked this up. Backcountry's delivery to Canada was very fast (less than a week).

Sizing question: The medium covert hoody fits me perfectly and is the right length for me (I'm short). I'm interested in the Caliber but should I order the medium or size up? Arcteryx describes the fit of the Caliber as 'athletic', but the Covert as 'loose'.

Also, how much longer is the Caliber than the Covert?

Thanks.

I purchased the Large and Medium packs to decide which fit best. My torso is about 19 inches but I have a large chest/shoulders. I seemed to be between sizes. The perfect pack would have been the medium torso length with the shoulder straps from the large pack.

The Large was slightly more comfy overall because of the longer shoulder straps but the torso fit could be better for me. For it's intended purpose of carrying no more than 15-20 pounds, the fit is fine though so I'm keeping the Large and returning the Medium.
I'm really impressed with the overall quality of this pack.

I received the size 3 in the mail - it's huge for a 40 litre pack. In fact, the top of the pack was like a headrest-which I hated. So I returned it. The quality of the pack is great though. I'd consider the size 2 (even though my torso length is 19") but don't want to chance the pack not fitting again.
