Scott's Bio

Hey I'm a gear junkie from SoCal living in Utah for a while. I might never leave! When I'm not riding a road bike or a mountain bike, I'm camping, hiking, trail running, or climbing-Utah has the best playground for it ALL. In the winter I board with my buddies at Snowbird with an occasional trip to Mammoth Lakes. I work at Backcountry.com because its a job that allows me to help other gear aficionados and enthusiasts find what they need. The number one question we get is "do you use this?" Yes, we use the gear we sell.
I'm currently a student at the University of Utah pursuing my Business degree. I volunteer at Splore.org and work at backcountry.com as a gearhead and in merchandising in our Park City office.

Random Fact:
I am a professionally trained chef.

first hand experience

1st impression: Wow factor upon opening the box ? trainer looks awesome. The matte white finish is easy to clean. The trainer can fit most any wheel diameter. My riding experience on a steep incline with some declining sections felt like the resistance matched exactly to the ride. It really feels like you?re cresting the hill or hitting the bottom of the hill as it appears on the screen.
I really like how simple and easy the simulator (called BSim) is to use. The software communicates with the trainer via the ANT+ Dongle and it?s worth noting the signal can be blocked if you are standing in front of the computer.
I signed up for the premium account ($12/month, no contract) which allows access to 300+ HD videos filmed by BKOOL. HD! The routes/videos can be tailored to fit a variety of training sessions you configure on BKOOL?s website, and then download the session to BSim and start riding.
The feature I?m most impressed with is the community/social aspect. You can join/create groups of riders online; interact with riders like social media, share sessions/rides, and challenge riders. Events can also be created within specific groups and you can simulate a stage race with a general classification.
Your training history can be saved on the site, and in addition to BKOOL?s sessions you can create custom sessions from your own training history. Ultimately there is a ton you can do with their site and software. There is an App out there now, but it?s pretty simple; for example the app will record your training just like strava does and then upload it to your BKOOL account.
A new software version will be available later in the year. This new software (and App) will allow you to run BSim from your smartphone and tablet. In the works is video editing software so you can record your own video, and paired with GPS data you can train on the same routes. The Garmin Virb would be a recommended camera to pair with this software.

The jacket is slim fit; Louis Garneau calls this a pro-fit.

I am 5'10" weigh 155 lbs (~36" chest) and a small jacket fits me like a glove. I have enough room to wear a couple thin layers for extra warmth and there is no extra material flapping on my torso. If you are concerned with it fitting too tight order up a size and try it out. I'd suggest ordering the same size you'd wear in european brands. We also have a great returns policy and feel free to contact me directly with any questions: 801-736-6396 ext 4139.

These are extremely warm bib tights. The wind resistant panels works very well at keeping the biting cold wind at bay. The tights are super soft on the inside and are thicker than any other tights I've worn. The SuperRoubaix fleece is very flexible and this tight is not restrictive at all.

I typically only wear them if it is 40 degrees or colder. Coldest Temps I will ride in are 32 degrees but I have worn them in 27 degrees comfortably.

The fit is euro and so expect to go up a size compared to North American brands. I wear a size medium and I am 5'10" 150 lbs.

These are my favorite gloves. Didn't expect them to last me all season long with 8 + months of riding and racing. They're much like a time trial glove because there are no seams on the backhand. They also have an awesome feature which is the vented palm. I never had a problem with my hands becoming sweaty with these lightweight gloves.

Love these bib shorts
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

First pair of bibshorts I have worn that are made with ONE seam in them. The seam runs along the middle of the bibs. I dont know how Louis Garneau does it, but this does make them feel super comfortable to wear. The short stays in place extremely well despite what you may think about it having only one seam. That may be partly due to the compression which is light and helps support the lower body very well.
When I wear this bib short (paired with the Course Race Jersey) I notice salt deposits on the jersey more than any other kit I own. I don't seem to sweat more than normal when wearing this, no, its truly the fabric that works so well at ventilation and moisture transfer.
I don't know if Aerodynamics really matter all that much when considering the grand scheme of things, but the shorts (in conjunction with the jersey) appear to be faster because it is an absolutely smooth surface. Overall, just a really cool piece. Also super pro looking.

I am 5'10" 150lbs and wear the size Medium.

This is another good option for a quality short from Louis Garneau. It's got the same fit as the top of the line Course Race Bib shorts so expect it to fit a full size smaller than most North American brands. Order a size up if you are unsure!
The 5 motion chamois is nearly unnoticeable and moves with your body really well; its performed well for me on many 3-4 hour rides. I like that the short fits very snug but is not restrictive. The whole piece is really light and I'd recommend this bib short if you want the comfort of the top-end bib shorts without the high price or compression.

I've never had better bar tape. This is by far my favorite tape I've wrapped my bars with. The rubber is super tacky and feels cushy. I wrapped my bars back in March and it has withstood the test of wet spring storms to pouring sweat in the summer months. Still hasnt unraveled. Wipes off clean with a rag and some cleaner.

It's a must have if you race.

This vest reeks of the common sense approach that Louis Garneau has in engineering their apparel. They got the idea through feedback from the Pro teams they sponsor and in collaboration with Europcar developed this technical masterpiece. It's a perfect vest for that 35-60 degree range and if you expect it might drizzle.
Best feature of the vest is the cut out for the back pockets. This gives you easy access to your jersey pockets and no spending extra energy to fiddle with a vest that covers your pockets.
Use this if you want a technical piece to keep your core warm on cold rides or races. The fit is euro and made for European racers so go up a size compared to north american brands if you fit those well.

You'll look pro.

Coldblack actually works!!

I've worn this bibshort on 2-hour rides with plenty of comfort for the duration of my ride. The chamois is very soft and compared to most brands at this price is a great value in my opinion. The fit is true North American fit, I wear a size small at 5'10" 150lbs, and this is a super comfortable fit.

The fit on this jersey is Euro, so order up a size from normal North American sizing. I am 5'10" 150lbs and wear a small.

The fabrics feel super nice on your skin, and the jersey stays in place. No annoying baggy pockets or sagging jersey back. The silicone grippers on the back hem keep everything in place very well.

The sleeves are lazer cut and are one single piece from the neck to the hem. They are a bit longer than normal, coming down to the middle of my upper arm. The piece does not restrict motion at all and yet hugs your upper body. Feels like wearing nothing.

My Favorite warm weather jersey
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This jersey is great when the temps rise and the sun is out. Make sure you wear sunscreen on a sunny day since the jersey will not protect you against UV rays. It's a super-lightweight fabric, almost like a mesh, that keeps you very cool on hot rides. When you're done riding head down to the local club for disco.

My favorite details of this piece are the flat-lock zipper and the long lazer-cut arm band. This arm band goes a little longer than normal, about halfway down my upper arm. So pro.

Bottom line: very comfortable warm weather jersey, looks pro.

The fit is Euro but made for the Euro Pro's, so expect it to fit a size smaller than compared to American brands.

If you get this piece you must match it with the Bib shorts: http://www.competitivecyclist.com/louis-garneau-course-superleggera-bib-short-mens?ti=U2VhcmNoIFJlc3VsdHM6Y291cnNlIGJpYiBzaG9ydHM6MToyOmNvdXJzZSBiaWIgc2hvcnRz

This is a great TT helmet, would recommend it for anyone wanting to get a TT helmet that looks pro and works as the other reviewers have mentioned.

Couple things you should know when buying this helmet:
1. make sure the bolts are that hold the shield are tightened properly if you are wearing the shield. Loose bolts will let the shield move around and possibly rip off your face if you move it too much.
2. the helmet runs slightly large, i wear a 7-1/2" fitted hat size and the medium is perfect. The Large size had a little too much room to sit on my head properly.

Feel free to contact me with any questions on the helmet.

Very simple piece but does the job very well. Love that it keeps your front very warm (40s-50s F) but allows ventilation on the back. Never had a problem with overheating. The only drawback is the pockets overload easily but i usually store my stuff in my jersey pockets so havent needed to rely on them.

This helmet rocks. I have the green one, and get tons of comments about it. This helmet is comfortable and true to size. The clip keeps the goggles in too, even on HARD hits. I use it with VZ goggles and they work really well together. (the vz goggles are larger than normal too)... All in all, i love this helmet.
