i think insulator means it keeps you warm? while ventilator means keep you cool in the summer? i wore it in the ozark endurance run just few days back and the evening temperature was about 40s low to 30s high and throughout, i never feel cold in my lower body. now, i'm thinking if i should invest one in the upper body.

i'm not sure what do you mean outer wear - very sorry because i don't have winter here in singapore. if you wonder can you wear something inside this tights (means this tights is worn on the outside), then i think the answer maybe no - to check with CW-X to confirm. but i think you can wear something over this tights. :)

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

i bought the cw-x insulator stabilyx tights and used it for this past weekend race - ozark endurance run in the state of MO. it really works for me! compare this product with the other normal stabilyx tights, this tights is slightly more heavy/thicker but it is very breathable. it shields me from feeling cold (the normal one would still do the job but you probably could feel a little wind still). totally recommended it. :)
