Salt Lake City for the Summer '11 and wherever the snow takes me for the 2012 ski season

Rachael's Bio

stoked to be back with backcountry.com... looking forward to working with them again. Super excited that the SOLE US distribution of Peak Performance outerwear is with backcountry.com.... they make beautiful high-quality things. I'm a skier based out of SLC. I love skiing so much that sometimes I pay less attention to tiny details. If you're reading my reviews; I'm a skier- not an analyst or a gear-junky... my opinions are honest and based off of use only. I love skiing and being outside: I feel lucky to have the job that I have and luckier to have good health. I'm recovering from an ankle surgery and life couldn't be better right now. My stoke is high and ankle feels great.

Fit: Runs small

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this flannel. It's super rad - I wear it EVERYDAY... I'm a huge fan. I've washed it a million times... I'm careful with it though (because I like it so much) - I don't dry it in the dryer every time. . . I'll lay it out to dry to change it up a bit. I totally dig the pattern and take it on all my trips. . . no joke.

I love this beanie and evidently so does everyone else: Because I've had it stolen off my head TWICE. BUT... I love it enough to keep it coming back to my closet. I dig the shallowness and it breathes well too. I'm not too big on OVERLY toasty beanies for every day use. This beanie is comfortable and stylish. Dig it.

Stylish... AND durable. I've put my pair of Gibson's through the wringer for sure. . . as in=thrown in ski backpack fast without a case . . . then I've fallen with them floating in my pack: They've been pretty smashed and they're still kickin'.... I'm impressed. They end up being my "if I only take one pair of sunglasses" type of shades. . . They do hold up and they'll work for ski-touring/ give you great coverage & sun protection, but then look sweet for round-town . Dig em

HUGE FAN

The Jetset has become my most worn Smith Sunglasses. They're super light, ultra comfy, and they're stylish as well. they have a hint of femininity without being to outright "girlie". They stay on your head for a ride, but feel like your go-to around city glasses too. I'm a big fan.

Excellent Pants

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These pants are EXTREMELY functional. They have vent zippers all the way up the sides, which is not only great for ventilation, you have easy access to a sock, boot top, knee pad, etc... This would be the only pant you needed all season. For warm days ski touring it has 100% venting with those zippers and then on cold wet days - the GORE-TEX is supreme, keeps you dry and shielded from the wind. You can layer as much or as little underneath these pants. The suspenders didn't work out for me (they're easily removable), so I ended up just using a pair of my own which worked great. . . the pant does have belt loops as well if you don't like the suspender idea.. They move very well and don't bunch up in strange spots. Peak Performance makes things they know women will use and actually ski in. I can't rave enough about this pant. They're great. Oh.... and they have added a super durable lining to the internal "boot upon boot" rip zone. It works very well if you're someone that shreds the bottoms of their pants. They do run a bit small.... but I tend to like a little bit of a roomier pant. Those colors in the photo are older colors of the same Heli-Alpine Pant and Jacket. . . I have the green ones too ! They're awesome! (Orange actually got a little dirty- but the green ones never did)

BEST JACKET I HAVE EVER OWNED

I've been in a Peak Performance Heli-Alpine Jacket now for 4 years. I ADORE this jacket. It's super warm especially considering it's merely an outer layer... The Gore-Tex is SO bomb on this jacket that wind is pretty impenetrable. . . The water resistance is also a huge factor in keeping you dry underneath. . . if you're dry and the wind can't effect you-- you've already won. Layering after that is easy. I have TRULY put this jacket through the wringer and it has never failed me. Plus it has such a great feminine fit. (I'm wearing a bib for a ski competition in the photo... but it's super cute as well as being super functional)... I think it's worth every penny of paying a little more... it's quality and will most likely fit you as a female better than other jackets you'll try on with similar functions. Peak Performance understands that women are skiing hard too... it's not a fashion over function jacket. (AND... on top of that this is a great price for a jacket that people at a Peak Performance store over in Europe would pay double for...)

Dinged up... Still love it

Here's the deal: I've had this water bottle longer than any other water bottle ever. It has been PUT THROUGH THE RINGER... I still love the flavor of the water (doesn't taste like the other liquids that have been in the water bottle other than water) ... It cleans very easily and I'm never concerned about it breaking. I don't ever travel without it and I definitely don't go skiing without it in my backpack. (again... inside a ski pack with crampons, shovel, other hard goods- not worried about it busting... and I fall a lot ;) ) If you don't screw it on right- it will leak however you kind of get the hang of it and can tell if it's screwed on right or wrong.

Familiarity: I've used it several times

It keeps your hot beverages ... HOT. I haven't used it for colder bevies yet... It cleans nicely and doesn't retain odors. . . or effect the flavor of the liquid inside. I'd recommend it without a hesitation. It's super nice if you want something a little more easy access than a full-on thermos but you still want your beverage to retain heat for a long while.

I love this ski. Dynastar is making it happen with the Cham series. The 107 is my ski of choice. It's lively and responsive, but also holds at high speeds. . . (I'm disagreeing a bit with another review here) . . . Mind you I'm not saying that this ski is MADE FOR high speed groomers-- but it does a surprisingly good job on them. . . It's a super fun charging ski that I skied in all sorts of different conditions last year. They're a BLAST at high speeds off piste-- I won the big mountain day of the RedBull ColdRush on this ski at Silverton, CO last year. I'm impressed. You can shred this in pow, crud, trees, hard packed, wet heavy, or fluffy dry.... it's versatile and fun.

This is the suit that I've been looking for. I bought a couple of other cross-backed (no pressure on the neck) . . .but none of them actually felt secure enough to be active in... this is the solution- it's secure and CUTE.... I feel comfortable playing beach volley-ball / cliff jumping / and surfing in this suit top. . .plus it's not so "sporty" looking that it doesn't look like a cute bikini top- if that makes sense. Definitely recommend this item.

I'm not someone that's perhaps as qualified as a lot of these other reviews in reviewing and testing a -20 bag. However I did just get done camping in the Andes in winter and the bag was amazing. I get super cold at night too. Mind you, temperatures never reached anything close enough to completely test the -20 claim on the bag. It was comforting to know and feel confident that I could however. I slept in the bag every night for 6 weeks--even in warm houses. it's a great size , super comfortable (I'm 5'7- bought the regular), and could be my new prized possession.

I've had my MSR WhisperLite for about 4 years now... it's reliable, lightweight, and can take a ding or two... as all the other reviews say== noteworthy- I just took it down to Mexico with me for the first time and I wasn't quite sure about the availability of camp fuel down there- so I took it knowing that regular unleaded fuel was a possibility - and sure enough went ahead and used regular unleaded fuel for 3 1/2 weeks-- it was a little dirtier but worked like a dream... then upon returning to the states- the stove was EXTREMELY easy to completely take apart and properly clean and flush-- so user friendly. It's an impressive lil' bit of equipment.

The Swindler is a GREAT pair of sunglasses. HUGE FAN. They look great and provide a lot of coverage. I have the "brown" lenses- they're marvelous. I dig the "gap" above the nose brim as well. I've had my pair for a long time and they're still my "go-to's" .. noteworthy- they have a nice gentle curve around your head. Super comfy- but aren't going to slip down the nose as much because of it

These shades are awesome. . . the lenses are a great shade too- not too dark at all- however perfect on a super bright day. They stay on well too- you could probably do flips on a tramp wearing them (okay- I'll try it later) and they'll stay on. Don't get me wrong though - they don't give you a headache or anything. they just feel durable and strong. plus i really dig the alternating shine-to-matte-finish check. Something to note: there is a slight dip in the center-top of the frame- it's not a straight-acrosser like the gibson- I don't prefer it one way or the other- but it's worth noting-
