Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: Runs large

I run between 20-40 miles / week. I have been running that distance for the past 3 years in traditional neutral full-form running shoes - mostly brooks. I decided to test a more minimalist design and I wasn't crazy about how the Brooks minimalist lines felt on my feet so i tried these on and took a chance on them. I wear a 9 in Brooks, but took a 8.5 in these. It took a few weeks to get used to less support - I had to cut down my mileage a little and there was a little pain. But I am happy i made the transition. I bought them in the early summer and I ran the NYC marathon in them in November -- felt totally natural on my feet. I just picked up my second Merrell minimalist shoe - the Bare Access.

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Fit: True to size

I got this to replace my 9 year old fleece. i like to move fast outside hiking and climbing so I primarily wanted something lightweight that I could wear over a base layer and would keep me warm. But I also like winter camping so i wanted it to work in conjunction with my other layers to keep me warm once I settle down in camp. I am 5'10" 145lbs and I got a small and it is really perfect. I can wear it over a base layer and be warm in most cases, or I have also worn an extra mid layer beneath it on really cold days. i took it winter camping in the adirondacks over Thanksgiving weekend with snow and temps around 0F, and I was very happy with how it performed shedding light snow and working with my other layers when it got cold at night. Back in the city, it has a slim fit and looks nice.

awesome simple, lightweight bag!
5 5

i bought this bag as a simple summit pack. it is perfect. it is so lightweight that in February i rolled it up and attached it to the top of my Gregory 70L bag while we hiked 16 miles into Katahdin in Maine, then detatched it and just used it alone for the summit. In the picture below it is full on Mt Hood. It is worth noting how simple it is though. there are no extra pockets or features. Just one big space with a roll-top. It takes some getting used to not having extra pockets. I use a few extra stuff sacks inside for my keys, wallet, food. And it is not really compatible with a camelbak or other hydration system. But the beauty of it is that there is no extra bulk or weight. And the more I used the roll-top, the more i like it. No more zippers to worry about...and then you can compress the pack easier by just rolling it up more. Attaching ice axes, tools, and poles is easy. i really couldn't be happier with this. not for everyone certainly -- but it is exactly what i wanted for my purposes. Also worth noting: i took out the "sleeping pad" and have not used it yet. i rather make this as light and flexible as possible.

heavy down sweater

When I first got this in the mail I was a bit worried how light it was - I was planning on taking it as a puffy up Illniza Norte, Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo in Ecuador. It looks and feels more like a heavy sweater or mid layer jacket rather than a huge puffy. But it kept me warm when we took a break, it is super light and compresses to where it takes up almost no weight in your pack. It was fine for my trip (I also had a heavy gore-tex NF shell and a fleece) but if I was going up to Alaska, I would probably want something heavier. With that said, the price is awesome and I will definitely continue using it. not disappointed with my purchase!!
