John's Bio

I'm a Utah local finishing up school at the University of Utah. Working at backcountry.com part-time is wonderful, as it allows me to get more involved in my hobbies. Some of my favorite things to do in my limited free time include: skiing, hiking, camping, climbing, fly-fishing, and trail running. I'm also a casual trail biker, and I'm starting to get into road biking. Although I love skiing in the winter, nothing makes me happier than to go backpacking for a week in a high mountain range with good friends, good fishing, and good times. My Backcountry.com phone extension is 4367, and I'm in the office on Wednesday from 2:30-10:00pm and Sunday from 1:30-10:00 PM MST.

Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
Fit: Runs large

I tried this on, and although I'm usually an M in nearly everything, it was enormous. The sleeves went past my fingers and I felt like I should add fifty pounds to make this work. I'm going to size down to a small and see how that works out.

If you're thinking about getting a few different goggles for all conditions, save yourself some time and money and just snag a pair of these. The multiple lens system allows you to switch out lenses in less than a minute. That means that even if the sun comes out midday, your one pair of goggles will do the trick. On a side note, I thought the white goggles would go well with my helmet, but as a dude, don't get white.

Initially I was stoked to get this helmet, which was a significant upgrade for me. However, I find the helmet to be pretty heavy and bulky after using it several times. It's still a solid helmet, but sometimes, especially on warmer days, you just want something lighter. That's not to say the venting isn't fantastic, because it does its job. Overall I find this to be just another helmet. I'll probably try something else out for my next one.

Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share
Fit: True to size

I gave this jacket to my younger brother as his xmas present, and he's absolutely loved it. It's definitely very puffy, but in a good, warm way. Every time I saw him this past winter, he had it on- even inside, because it's just that comfortable.

These are hands-down the best gloves that I have ever owned. Not only do are they very warm, but the goat leather provides tons of dexterity, so that I never feel at loss with my poles. Besides that, I've gotten countless compliments on their looks while on the slopes!

These shorts breath exceptionally well with venting on the sides of the pocket and with a clever combination of cotton and polyester. In addition they're very lightweight and dry pretty quickly (in case you get caught in sudden summer showers). The belt closure does a fantastic job, however I still wear a belt overtop, just for the extra support. In general, these tend to run a little big around the waist.

Although I just recently got this helmet and have only taken it out twice, I have been liking it. It's fit my head and two friends' heads with just minor adjustments that took maybe 10 seconds. In addition, the helmet is really lightweight and doesn't stop your head from breathing. Definitely a great buy.

I've got a small face that usually makes most shades look huge on me. However, these glasses do a great job of a fitting most faces and look great. The overall quality of the glasses is good, but not great. So far I have dropped them while biking/hiking a few times and they've held up without any scratches. Still I wouldn't be careless with them!

This lock does a great job for quick commuting around town on an inexpensive bike. Even though it's a U-lock, it's not unbreakable by any means! To see if it's possible, I have gone ahead and opened mine up with a bic pen. That means that anyone familiar with breaking into bike locks should have a pretty easy time nabbing your bike if you're not careful!

Following standard stoic sizing, these run a little long and more athletic (narrower). I'm 5'11 and 160 lbs (shorter legs), and they're about 1 inch too long. Dang! Not that it's a big deal though, I don't mind having a wrinkle in my long underwear when I got my shell on overtop. In addition, it's definitely thicker that what I was expecting. They're not really something you want to have on if you're skiing hard or skinning for a while and building a lot of sweat. I'd recommend something thinner for that.

This baselayer is perfect to wear up skiing! The medium fits me perfectly at 5'11, 160 lbs. Definitely worth picking up at this price. Stitching and quality are awesome. I still have my similar model from last year that I use all the time, and the durability is incredible after all I've put it through!

These pads are super comfy, stay in place, and keep you warm in colder conditions. I've tried these and the BD Telekneesis, and these beat the Telekneesis hands down in terms of quality, comfort, and staying in place (key for me).

This is an amazing, lighter-weight luft jacket. I love the way it fits, feels, and it's incredibly warm, too. The only downside in my opinion is that the hood is extremely oversized, which really doesnt matter too much. I can see how this would be helpful when mountaineering, although it makes it semi-impractical around town or camping.
