Ivan 's Passions

Trail Running
Hiking
Mountain Biking

Ivan 's Bio

Originally from Peru, moved to Utah a long time ago (over 20 year ago) and fell in love with the place. I love to mountain bike and trail run in the summer, ski in the winter. Not as good as I would like to be in any of those things, but those activities keep me excited about life, they put a smile on my face and keep me healthy.

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I saw some videos in Youtube showing how to used this kit because I was intimidated. It was easier than I thought, but having the right equipment was 99% of the battle. If you want to bleed or flash your hydrolic brakes, all you need is this kit, and a bottle of DOT brake fluid. You don't even have to be a mechanic. My brakes were not responding to my hard squeezes of the levers, after I bleeded them using this kit, the feel is SOLID and the stopping power is SOLID as well.

Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have just replace my camelback blowfish with this backpack because I heard good reviews on it. I have only taken it mountain biking twice, and several times hiking. This backup is great. I love its separate tool pouch, its pump pockets inside, and the mesh pockets for small electronics and keys.
The hard surface that helps it keep its shape and the bag close to one's body is outstanding. At times, after I have drank about half the water in the reservoir, I felt like I was not even carrying a backpak. Unlike my camelback that bounces around even when the straps are pulled all the way. It is smaller than the camelback blowfish, but I didn't need all that space anyway. This is a great design for mountain biking, but the using it for hiking did not pose any problems, so I recommend it for both uses.
I liked this pack so much (Raptor 6), that I got the Raven 6 for my wife. She has only used it hiking and reports with big grinning smile that she loves it. She was replacing a northface day pack. Once again, we like the fact that it stays close to your body and feels almost like a vest. The side hip pockets are a brilliant addition for quick access to snacks and even small electronics. HOWEVER, if it rains, the hip pockets are not a good place for anything that can get wet, as they are made of mesh that is exposed to the elements. I give it a 5 stars!

The flapjack pack is awesome. It was designed (in my opinion) for commuters that ride bikes to work. The pockets for the laptop has enough padding to protected from sudden and jerky movement. There other pockets are definitely handy. I use this backpack every day now and love it. I like it that it sits higher on my back, and although it has a lot of room to bring an extra change of clothes, it is not bulky because it stays close to your body. The good looks do not hurt either, and the little band in the back is perfect for a bright light or reflector. This is a SOLID backpack. It is the right size for daily commute, it may need more room if you are going to do some overnight stuff (in my opinion)

This is a great bag. I consider it an upgrade for my camelback blowfish which I have had for a few years. I like the size of the Raptor 6, I like the hydration bladder which stays flatter than any of the camelback's that I have used. Also, I love the tool (removable) pouch and the extra pockets around the waist band. I have only taken it on a couple of rides, but it seems solidly built so I imagine I will be using it for years.
I liked this so much, I bought the Viper 6 for my wife and she loves it as well. It is definitely a well made backpack. I use it for mountain biking, but my wife uses it for hiking, it works fine for either activity.

Fit: True to size

These gloves work fine, it does give extra protection to the little finger and provides semi adequate "cushion" to the palm of the hands. The material seems durable, but it is not as light as other gloves. All in all, it does the job, but for summer cross country riding I would recommend something with lighter thinner materials. One more thing, the glove doesn't have an adjustment and it is not very elastic, at least for me, I like the ones with more elastic or velcro to adjust any slack on the back of one's hand.

This is something I have not had to use very often, but when I needed it, it was so nice to fix my mountain bike chain without using tools. It was not a "temporary" fix either, it actually works fine as a permanent fix. I still have one of these connectors in my chain. I recommend it!

The size of this bag makes it easy to take backpacking. It is relatively light weight as well. The incorporated (or built-in) pump makes it easy to set up and get ready. It is comfortable so it definitely helps in getting some needed rest after your day's journey. I totally recommend it, I have bought an additional one to complete a pair.

I bought this swimming suit for my daughter. Partly because it was modest (enough coverage of her nakedness), and also because its design is nice looking. Well, my daughter has used it twice since I bought it, and she LOVES IT. It fits her well and the citrus color looks awesome against her dark skin (she gets her brown skin from me, her Peruvian dad). Anyway, we only have one complaint (hence the 4 stars) : the zipper in the front presents a potential for disaster if it comes undone. Though it has never happened, my daughter has expressed fear of that happening, so perhaps is more a psychological fear than real. Anyway, the materials are great and a little safety pin puts my daughter's mind at ease when jumping from the high jumping board at our local pool. She recommends it.

I started using KAYANO 13 a few years ago, and I have loved these shoes. I just purchased the KAYANO 19 (GEL's) a few weeks ago and I have put about 80 miles on them already, they give excellent support for my slightly pronating stride. This shoes have been great specially on long runs at the start the season when I'm carrying extra pounds. The shoes are heavier than a lot of other shoes out there, but the extra weight is worth it if you want to protect your knees from road pounding.

This is my 3rd pair of Kinvara's, they are light and yet they offer decent support. I have completely worn out my previous 2 pairs, what can I say, I like them. However, the one thing I noticed with my previous pairs is that they wear out a bit faster than other running shoes that I have used. Maybe that is a function of its lightness, that is the only reason I gave it a 4 star instead of a 5. Anyway, I hope this my 3rd pair lasts longer. One observation, i use these running shoes on pavement and on the road, I only tried them once on the trail and needless to say, its that they are not design for trail running which need a bit more stiffer soles.

I'm not a professional or competitive cyclist, more of a recreational one that likes to be in shape during the winter months and I have been pleased with this trainer. It does the job and keeps me using my bike on stormy days when it was not safe to go out on the road. It is not fancy, but its simplicity is a plus for me. Easy to use, and at my level, it is more than adequate. It feels sturdy and well built.
I don't like exercising indoors so I just needed something inexpensive that does the job in harsh winter nights or mornings. I use it as little as possible, if I had to stay indoors more often and for longer sessions, I'd get a stationary bike instead, but for me this trainer is the perfect combination of price and value.

I got this jacket for my 13 year old son. He loves it. I was not sure, because it is hard to judge style with teenagers, but he liked the color and the way it fit (kind of lose on him, 5'5'' and 105 lbs, and we got him a men's small) He has plenty of room to move while we ski and keeps him plenty warm.
