Idaho Guy's Bio

I love being in the mountains, scrambling to the top of the next peak, hiking in to the back counry, and camping with my scouts. Just wish I had more time to spend in the outdoors.

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is the only 3 man tent I've found that actually fits 3 men comfortably. I have used it on several hikes in the Tetons and mountains of central Idaho. We've been in all types of weather and have never had issues. The set up is incredibly easy.

A few weeks ago I purchased the footprint for this tent. Upon receiving it, my two boys and I decided to sleep outside using just the footprint and rain fly. That's when I found out my boys had stored the rain fly wet after their last excursion. It was covered in mildew and smelled terrible. Oddly enough, the tent was absolutely fine. I called Black Diamond to see if I could purchase just the rain fly, since I knew it wasn't a warranty issue. They put me into warranties anyway and a guy named Eric informed me that they have found several instances of the tents purchased around 2010 having this problem. He told me to ship it back and they would replace it with a complete new Vista. All I'm paying for is the return shipping. Plus he told me I could keep all my stakes and poles. They just want the tent and fly. Awesome customer service by Black Diamond, especially when it wasn't expected.

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought the Vista tent a couple of years ago. I finally purchased the ground cloth a few weeks ago and immediately used it on a camp out. In fact, I didn't even bring the tent. Just used the ground cloth, poles, and rain fly. The ground cloth is color coded just like the rain fly and I clipped the two together in seconds. I slept great and seriously wonder if I'll ever take my tent out again, unless bugs are a major problem.

In addition, I noticed my rain fly had some mildew on it. Yes, I did the unforgivable and forgot to let it dry after the most recent outing. I called Black Diamond for some advice and they weren't too knowledgeable Then I called backcountry.com. The rep told me about the Nikwax system and even offered to send it free shipping since I had just ordered this ground cloth and a sleeping bag recently. Great service. Diffidently a big fan of the company.

Just bought this bag and did a trial run in my backyard with my two boys. Slept on a ground cloth and rain fly combo, so wind was able to still get in. Temp only got down to about 33F, but with the wind it was still pretty chilly. The bag was great. Loved how light it was and was surprised at all the loft. I had to strip off my fleece bottoms because I was literally roasting. I still struggle with mummy bags because of the more confined feel, but you can't beat the design for warmth. I'm a scout master and will be using it on numerous occasions in the upcoming months. I'll check back in tell you how it performs in real cold. I'm in SE Idaho, by the way. Getting below 0 degrees Fahrenheit is the norm during the winter.
