F. McGill's Bio

I just enjoy being outdoors. Winter is my favorite time of the year. There's nothing like being out cross country skiing on a cold day, enjoying the silence & the beauty that Mother Nature provides. Kayaking, biking, hiking - all things I enjoy doing. I enjoy backcountry.com as I get gear I know will be comfortable, so that's one less thing to deal with.

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: Runs small

After getting a fatbike last winter, I realized the main weak spot in my cold weather riding gear was my feet. I decided to order these instead of waiting for a much more expensive pair of 45NRTH WLVHAMMER boots. After using these this winter, I can say these will not cut it for riding in the winters we have had the past couple of years in Michigan. I ordered a size up for me, to make room for an extra layer of socks, and even with the extra layer and chemical foot warmers, these shoes do not keep your feet warm when the temperature is under 30 degrees. And if you have to stand in the snow at all say, while a buddy fixes something on his bike, you may as well head to the car after that. The cold comes right through the bottom of these. Having said all that, they are not a bad waterproof shoe for weather between 35-45 degrees. I wore them on a 40 mile mudfest on a 36 degree day and they kept my feet warm and dry. So they are really more of a late fall, early spring shoe.

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: True to size

I ordered these - based on a friend's recommendation - to use primarily for riding my fatbike during the winter. After about two months of use I'm glad I ordered them. The pants/tights are comfortable to wear while riding. For the most part I have used them while wearing a pair of compression tights underneath them, in temperatures under 30 degrees, many times closer to single digits. My legs have not been cold while wearing these. Once the temperature someday gets above 30 degrees, I can see wearing these with just a chamois under them probably up to 40 degrees. I'm not sure I would wear them without there being snow on the ground however as I'm not sure how durable they would be on a frozen, non snow covered trail.

I ordered this jacket earlier in the season & I have been very happy with it. I'm wearing it for cross country skiing & fat tire biking and I only need to wear a light base layer under the jacket to stay warm. Even in a driving snow storm, this jacket has done it's job of keeping me warm. Fit wise, I'm 5'9, with about 34" arms, & a large fits me great. I love all the Stoic gear I've ordered to this point.

When I opened up the box & looked at this, I thought there was no way this would fit me. Well, once I tried it one, I couldn't believe how well this fit and how comfortable it is to ride with. I've used it maybe 6-7 times now and I'm very happy with it. I've been lucky so far not to crashed to test it out, but fit wise, this thing is nice.

This is the same thing I wrote about the Launch Knee/Shin guards - these are great pads for XC riding. When you first put them on, you may think they will be a bit restrictive, but once you start riding, you completely forget you have them on. They do not slide around at all. I bought these in part because I thought they would be cooler then my old pads and after riding in 90+ degree weather a couple of times, I can say they are definitely cooler than my old pads.

I have to agree with a previous review - these are great pads for XC riding. Highly recommend them. I'm 5'9, 174 and the S/M fit me great.
