Recently completed my AST 1 with a group of 7 other friends, all beginners. I bought this after doing some research against prices and specs, and also my friends recommending other trackers/beacons which they were going to buy, had or already tried in a shop. I stuck with my choice which was this awesome Mammut Element Barryvox Avalanche Beacon, during our practice on an actual mountain off piste, we buried a couple of beacons at varying depths and disturbed the top of the snow in the whole area so we couldn't follow snow tracks. One thing I noticed was I was able to track faster and more accurately in the coarse and fine search than my friends who where using cheaper but more popular trackers being ones that use L.E.D. lights for direction instead of a LCD screen, I found with the coarse search I didn't have to stop as much when the arrow direction changed as the Element has 9 directions compared to 5 or less, when it came to the fine search I found the Mammut landing strip search to be absolutely fantastic, I used this in a cross pattern to precisely pinpoint the beacon and within a few stabs of the probe I had located it. In the fine search I found I was finding the beacon within 30secs compared to all my friends at about 2-3mins with only the distance number to work with and the LED directional arrows confusing them with the fine search, for beginners I was on it like a pro thanks to this beacon and could only imagine I would be even faster with the Mammut pulse which uses a floating directional arrow for the coarse search. If I was buried, I would wish all my friends had a beacon this accurate and not a cheaper one.
The harness is super comfortable and extremely well made. The switch from off to send to search is a simple large slide switch on top of the beacon, no issues there. And the multiple burials is super easy to use and mark with the push of a button.
I'm seriously happy with this beacon!!! Highly Recommended
