Backcountry.com’s Gearheads are your instant connection to gear knowledge. They’re passionate outdoor experts hell-bent on helping you find the right ski, saddle, or pro. Follow their adventures and exploits.

I grew up in Western Washington and moved to Utah a little over 3 years ago in order to pursue life as a professional ski bum.

I couldn't be happier with my decision although I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss being able to walk down to the water whenever I want. ( and no a giant body of smelly water full of brine shrimp does not count)

When I'm not working you can find me playing in the dirt, snow, water, or any place i don't have to worry about the way I smell.

Feel free to give me a call if you need some help! ext. 4285

Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share

I gave this to my father as a gift, but this is a review from my mother about the product:

This is the second pair of Black Diamond trekking poles I've purchased. They're replacing the cheap, flimsy ones my husband tried to use. The locking mechanism for telescoping the poles is far superior to the "twist and pull" method on his cheaper ones. The hand grips are really comfortable as are the wrist bands. I've used my original pair for about 8 years and they've carried me over lots of steep, rocky paths. With arthritic feet, knees, and hips, I can continue to hike (mostly pain free!) using these poles.

Fit: True to size

I gave this as a gift but have this to share from the recipient:

This is the coziest hoodie I've ever owned. Perfect fit, not too sloppy, not too tight. I'm 5'5" tall, 140 lbs. and the medium fits well. The zipper is sturdy and the wide ribbing around the bottom is really flattering. Plus, I love the color. It makes me smile!

Hi Daniel,

These would easily be warm enough. I assume you're not going for a winter ascent? Regardless, these should be more than warm enough. These are nice because you won't need an overboot with them. The removable liner is also key, as you can take it out and put it in your sleeping bag with you each night. Hope this helps!

I absolutely love this hat. I've used it for everything from trad-climbing to paddle-boarding, but have actually found my favorite spot to wear this hat is probably the golf course. It shades me well enough that I don't have to wear sunglasses, which I don't like while golfing. It's a bit of a foam material, rather than your typical hat. This lets it shed water extremely well too, which has come in handy a few times. Great hat.

From the recipient:

I haven't crashed while wearing this helmet so I cannot attest to its ability to protect your brain, but I will say that I really enjoy the functionality of the air vents, visor and ratchet adjustment. This is a very well designed and stylish biking helmet.
