Carson's Bio

I'm a 20 year old Bio Major currently residing in San Luis Obispo, CA. I try to make it into the back country every weekend even if it's just a 20 mile jont. I live for the trail and will praise great gear when I find it.

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was hesitant about this lamp when I went to order it. The technology seemed a bit "too much" for a head lamp. Plus the idea of my light adjusting itself gave way to images of faulty mechanisms and my light dimming at important moments.

BUT I WAS WRONG. This light has been my source of illumination for almost 9 months now and has done over 200 miles of backpacking from the arid regions of Joshua Tree, to the bushwhacking conditions of Big Sur, and further north into red woods of nor cal and Oregon. To be completely honest it's stood up better than most lamps I've owned .
I don't know how I lived without the NAO technology. The streamlined simplicity of not having to adjust knobs and buttons, makes transitioning from spotlighting the trail ahead to the dim flood for a map check, second nature.
The idea of programable settings for different activities is a bit gimmicky. I find creating your own is better than usign their default settings.
As far as battery life, they left no stone unturned when designing the battery. Updated Lithium Ion provides hours of intense light with out sacrificing weight. Also if the LI battery goes out, simply pop it out and substitute double a's as the pack supports both.

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I recently picked up one of these guys for myself after borrowing one for a fastpacking trip. Honestly when it come to head lights it?s hit and miss. Of course you?re going to pay for quality but at the same time some of the features that have come out are a bit gimmicky.
I will say this light has no gimmicks, no fancy software to program your light. It is however, straightforward, bright, and versatile.
My favorite feature with this head lamp is the flip up defuser that turns the spot light into a flood light. It works like a charm. I like running at night and I prefer a flood to a spot when I?m running.
On the topic of running with a headlamp, we all know the struggle to keep one on your noggin while exercising. Unlike most lamps in its price range, the battery pack on this Petzl is on the back of the head which distributes the weight better and helps to hold it tight and in place.
SImply put this light is a bargain deal for the price!

I hunted these suckers down when I saw them in the Backpacker Magazine Gear guide back in '07. I've been using the same one up until last weekend. It's held up and maintained waterproofing the whole way. Last weekend it had an unfortunate introduction to a sharp tree branch.
This is BY FAR the best dry sack I've owned. and having four compression straps makes cinching things down, well a cinch! I used a medium for my North Face Aleutian and it managed to pack it down smaller than a volleyball! It saves so much room in your pack for other gear.
A straight up must have for any backpacker.

I love having inline purification. I can pump water straight into my bottle and flip a switch without having to wait and stir a pen around. (I cary the pen though just in case this one goes out) I was hesitant at first, mainly due to how much of a beating my water bottles go through but the manufacturer provides a LIFETIME warranty at no extra cost. With my experience the battery life in this is longer than that of Steri-Pen. This bottle is one of the best UV purification tools on the market.

This pack takes comfort to a whole new level. For being as big as it is and having as much storage space as it does this pack wears like a feather on my back. With with over 14 points of adjustability this pack can fit you like shell to a turtle. I love the inline pocket and designs for adding a hydro bladder to the pack. I use the Osprey Hydraform bladder and it matches up perfectly. I saw the raving reviews and put them to the test in the steep rises and falls of the Ventana Wilderness. First I did a 40 miler with a normal load just to figure out the fit then the next weekend I loaded it to full capacity and went in with 65lbs of gear. While I am not a fan of excessive weight I will say it still wore like a feather on my back. Simply put this is the best pack I?ve had the pleasure of testing.

While I typically trail run I like having a pair of shoes that are versatile enough to give me support on the trail and comfort on the pavement. These shoes worked perfectly.
I run on all sorts of terrain with these. I've taken them up and down Bishop peak trail but they didn't budge and begged for more. I ran them a couple hundred miles in pavement over the past six months and still have no complaints.
I've really only discovered two shortcomings.
One, over a pointed or sharp rock the foam outer soles are notable to keep the pressure from hitting your foot like a hard plastic sole of a trail running shoe would.
Two, the laces will effective, struggle to stay tied durring long runs.
Overall I am very pleased with these shoes and might buy them again.

I got these shorts during my first track season and trained in them all four years of high school. When they say better than naked they mean it. The material is so lite you barely notice its there. The shape around the thighs is unbelievable, virtually no friction. My favorite pair of running shorts by far.
