Ben, a small nor cal shop called bndskigear.com makes long leashes with break away tabs for just this purpose. A nice side benefit is you can keep them attached while ripping skins in sketchy spots and have the peace of mind that you're not going to lose your ski. FWIW, I've tried the multiple zip tie method of creating a breakaway leash with the OEM radical leashes and it didn't work too well. Took a digger at the resort and the windmilling of the skis on a short leash was enough to break the zip tie. Sketchy. If you go with a breakaway option, be sure to test it! Good luck.
