Andy Rice's Bio

I moved out here to ski after college at the University of Colorado, and have since stayed. Having the Wasatch less than 30 minutes away from my house in downtown Salt Lake is awesome. In the summers I like to hit up Millcreek canyon or the Shoreline trail behind the U and in the Winters I stick to Little Cottonwood.

I just completed my Master's in Fine Arts at the U and maintain an active studio practice. I love having the Wasatch as my playground when I need to clear my head and spark some creativity. You can check out my website at www.andrewriceart.com

I’d love to answer your gear related questions. Here is how you can contact me, my email is arice@backcountry.com or I am on the Live Chat service Monday and Tuesday afternoons (130-10pm) MST and Thursday and Friday from 1030-3pm. Hit me up! Burton always hits it out of the park on their outwear. Great fit, best style around, best colors around, and then full technical functionality as well.
The long cut was what Sarah was looking for most of all. But, she needed to look good, and stand out. This jacket stood out above the other options by a long shot. The Sandstruck Metallic/Tropic color is a white gold, which is definitely unique. The only complaint so far is that it is a little stiff (loud and crinkly) at first, but that is breaking in nicely as the season progresses.

The Durashell material Burton uses is up there with Gore in terms of waterproof/breathable. And, has just enough insulation to keep you warm without having to layer underneath very heavy.

The Screen Grab Media Holster. which is inside the chest pocket is an awesome addition. It keeps your phone attached to your jacket so you don't have to worry about dropping it when you pull it out on the lift.

I have been using Airblaster gear for a while now for a reason. Best fit, great style, and technical features to hold up in the worst of the worst conditions. These bibs fit great (I got the M, 5'9" and 150lbs) without having any drag on the bottom cuff when walking through the parking lot. They aren't baggy, but are not skinny pants either. They feel a bit like a heavy canvass, but are not particularly heavy pants, just a durable construction. Inside leg vents are key, too. Pro-tip: wear over your fist baselayer, but under your midlayer. That will keep full range of movement in hips and shoulders. It is also been working best to keep my phone in the chest pocket on these, under the jacket and close to my body. That keeps it from getting too cold and draining the battery.

These babies are a true one ski quiver. I ski Alta, primarily, so am no stranger to a very wide range of conditions. Untouched waist deep one run after a storm, to sun-affected ice on west facing slopes the next, with everything in between all in the course of an afternoon. The Astris takes it all with ease.

What they are not are a recreational ski. These are a fairly stiff, with some good torsional rigidity, meaning they don't have a lot of 'give.' If you're not careful, they will ski you. That being said, they do have a playful side and will react with good response and 'pop' in the right scenarios. These two elements combined make for a perfect Alta ski (or any Rocky Mountain area, for that matter). Also, for being a stiffer ski, there is enough flex in the nose to float no problem in soft snow. The stiffer flex overall, with the floaty nose and somewhat playful nature makes them shine best in crud and chop, which, let's be honest, is what we all find ourselves in most of the time.

If you are an expert skier and looking for that one ski to replace your beat up multi-ski quiver, the Astris is your top choice.

My skis before these were the Atomic Coax (older twin tip model, about 108mm underfoot) and the Atomic Automatic 117, for some context.

There is a reason these continue to have a 5 star rating year after year. They are the best ski socks around. Very thin to give you the best fit inside your boot. Warm for how light and thin they are. Naturally anti-microbial, so your foot doesn't smell up the lodge when you take your boots off and throw back a Boomerang inside the Sitzmark up at Alta. I'm a size 9 street shoe and went with the Large size in the socks.

my best friend, Sarah, was in dire need of some new boots. We were both sick of her constant complaining about boot issues so I decided to spring for an early b-day gift. These fit her great right out of the box. A stiff enough flex for skiing all over the mtn , but not restrictive. Walk mode is key for apres and the power lock thing on the power strap keeps everything tight around the calf. After watching Sarah rip it on these right out of the box, I can confidently suggest these to expert level skiers looking for a comfortable and aggressive boot.

These are the best pair of underwear I have ever had. Time to upgrade my whole arsenal with Stance now. We know how awesome the socks are and now we have underwear to go along with them.

I ordered a small and they fit great. I am a 29-31 inch waist, depending on the day.

I felt the size small was a little smaller than the size chart indicated. I am typically a 29-30 waist in most all pants, and these felt a little too snug on me. Also, did not like that 'racing stripe' down the side. Ended up returning.

love these shoes. Fit is pretty true for a running shoe. I wear a 9 street shoe and have a 9.5 in these. I love how breathable they are for a trail runner and the grip is some of the best I have ever felt. Have only used them a couple times on some mild, flat terrain. Waiting to see how they hold up on the dry and rougher rock around the foothills outside SLC once the snow clears.

I got this jacket to use as my resort jacket. The fit is great! slim and long, but not ridiculous long like some of those 'tall-t' type jackets. I wear a medium in most t-shirts, but I got the large to fit over some layers when I need. The 60g of insulation is the perfect amount for a resort jacket, in my opinion. It is heavy enough to wear on it's own in warmer, spring days, but will definitely need some layering on colder days.

I love these boots! 2nd time purchasing them because I wore my first pair out after wearing them just about everyday, through heavy use. Super comfortable and the look only gets better with age. I suggest a leather waterproofer/conditioner to help maintain waterproof-ness and longevity. (http://www.backcountry.com/nikwax-creme-waterproofing-wax-for-leather?s=a).
Pretty true to size fit too. I'm right around 8.5/9 and I get the 8.5 in these for a good, snug fit.

This is a perfect fall shirt/jacket. It fits really well and is not too heavy to wear around the house. Just warm enough for the sunny, but slightly brisk days of Fall. It is true to size for the size chart, with long arms. It fits close to the body, but not tight at all.

these are a great pair of track pants. I was hoping for a bit more tapered fit, even though they are loose. For a track pant, they are great. Easy on/off if you have shorts on underneath for going to or from the trail or gym. They do fit on the longer side as well.

First off, this is a great flannel! really great fit for me, which is skinny with long arms. I am a medium for most short sleeves, but sometimes will have to bump up to a large in button-ups and jackets for the sleeves to fit well. Not an issue on this one. It also has a really good, slightly tapered fit around the body, which is a good fit for me.
The only issue I have had is multiple buttons have fallen off! An easy enough fix, but still kind of annoying. I wouldn't let this deter me from getting it again, or giving as a gift.

I love these tabs! After trying a variety of different powders and tabs for electrolyte replenishment, the Nuun have come away the clear winner in my book. The flavor is not overpowering AND there is none of that particulate residue left over from what didn't get dissolved in the water. The Energy give a pretty good little boost and the Active hydrate me up really well. Great after or during a workout and especially great after a night drinking ;)

this is easily one of the best hoodies I have had. A slimmer, but longer fit through the body with long enough sleeve length to fit my monkey arms. A lot of times I will by large shirts just to fit in the arms and have a longer cut, but the M is perfect in this. Super warm for its weight too. highly recommended.

I couldn't believe how light this was when I got it. The thermoball zip out layer is the ideal fall and mild winter jacket and then the shell has worked as a rain shell these past couple days. Probably the most versatile jacket I have found. Got the small in this and it fits well.

Embrace the short shorts, you'll be happy you did. Easier movement and much more comfortable in the heat once you start to sweat. My only complaint is no front pockets. I know most running shorts do not have them, but they should. Never to store gear in while running, but for carrying phone, keys, bar, gel pack, etc to and from car. I'm always annoyed by lack of front pockets, but i guess that is somewhat frivolous. Overall, I definitely back these and would buy a second pair for the spring once, or if, these go on sale. I have 29-30 inch waist and got the small. Tight, but wouldn't want to size up.

These are definitely the best headphones I have had at this price point. Super easy on the wallet and have a pretty damn good sound quality. They block out all outside noises as well. Perfect for ignoring your roommate, girlfriend, co-worker, etc. I have had the same pair for about 3 years and have had 0 issues. Definitely recommend them.
