This pack will carry just enough. Two water bottles (included), a light lunch and a couple of small pockets for keys and a flashlight. The water bottle pockets are just a bit wide (but not deep) for the included cycling-style bottles. This makes you think that they may fall out, but this has only happened to me once and that was when I was picking up the pack from my car floor. A 1-liter Nalgene bottle can be squeezed in, but is also unstable because the bottle pockets aren't quite deep enough. I'd have preferred deeper bottle pockets just a little wider to carry my Nalgene bottles when I go on very long hikes. The main compartment could be made expandable or perhaps they could add some loops to attach things on. Overall, not my perfect waist pack, but I prefer a minimalist approach as opposed to the larger waist packs that are on the market. Like all North Face products, the construction quality is excellent. Perhaps the next design will have better bottle pockets and more flexibility.
