A girl likes options. Why should she deliberate between pants and shorts for her climbing or travel day? So prAna designed the Women's Monarch Pant with a flattering straight-leg fit and an option to zip off the lower legs to make knee-length shorts. Quick-dry, wicking fabric and a trim design make sure you stay comfortable on the go.

Here's what others have to say...

Great pant!

I haven't got to hike in these yet but I plan to. Love the fit and length. I am 5'10, size 14. They have enough stretch to be comfy while taking large steps up steep trails. I love them so far!!!

great fit, very comfortable

Just got these in and I can't wait to put them to good use! The fit is perfect. 5'9", 145lbs, bought a size 8 and there just the right amount of wiggle room. My favorite part is the length of the pant; even with my boots on they'll still be long enough. The cargo green is a nice color as well. Look good enough to wear around town, too. Recommend it.

Archaeology Dig to the Himalayas

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I took these on an archaeology dig with a lot of mud-crawling and muddy clay holes and they did great! Kept the lower extremities dry and un-chafey. I got a 4 and I'm about a 6 at most department store with heavy muscle on the thighs. There's still enough room for a tight or long-john to go under them if need be. They sit right below the belly button and stay up to avoid plummer's crack. They are a hair long for me at 5'6" but with boots on it's no big.
My next adventure is a trek in the rainy valleys of the Himalayas so we'll see how the tech work out there. I like the style of the Monarch for this trip because they look good but maintain the kind of casual modesty that can be handy in some countries.
Overall, a winner do far. But maybe not the first choice for those who have slimmer legs and frame or just prefer a snugger pant fit.

Awesome.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought my first pair to take on a camping/road trip across the country and they should have been the only pair I brought. They held their shape and were incredibly comfortable. They moisture wicked well and paired with some wool long underwear they were comfy enough and warm enough to sleep in. After that trip I bought a second pair to take on a Canadian canoe trip. Wore one pair all week - canoeing, hiking, etc. It was nice to have one clean pair to change into once we got out of the wilderness :) But they are an awesome pant. They hold up well, stretch so you can climb in them, and water just bounces off of it. They ARE quite long though. I just roll them. I am 5'2, 150 with an athletic build and an 8 fits perfect. The capri hits me well, I thought it would look goofy since I am so short, but hey, no complaints here. Overall just an awesome pant.

Useful, well made pant.

Great Pant! Bought these along with the Solitaire convertible pant for climbing Kilimanjaro last month and they were perfect. Slightly heavier material than the Soitaire. Very comfortable - even for the 30+ hr plane journey. I am 5'10" 140lbs and the 10 was comfortably big to move freely and had room for several different levels of long underwear underneath.

DO IT

Truly what I needed. I am preparing for a backpacking trip in Asia soon. Currently reside in Korea and these pants are amazing. It is very humid in Korea and I wanted to test the pants in the heat. Zipping them off into capris was quick and easy. They wick moisture really well. They fit my bum great. I am 5.7 and most of my height is in my legs. The length is perfect for me - they cover the tops of my hiking shoes neatly and don't drag or look bunched. Wore them for 4 days straight on a camping trip, they held up very well and dried quick. highly recommend them.

Returning these

I really did not like these pants. Ordered a size 8 and they are just too long for my 5'3" frame. I had to keep pulling the pants up - very uncomfortable when I tried to wear them. I'm returning them.

Not my favorites

I had the previous version of these pants and I loved them, unfortunately they met an untimely end after a too close encounter with a wood stove. I loved the fit and the cargo pockets.

I ordered the newer version because I missed the old pants so much. Like most Prana pants, the Monarchs run very large. I usually wear a size 4 but I need a 0 or 2 Prana sizing. These pants also run quite a bit longer than other Prana pants, I usually don't have to hem and I had to hem about 3 or 4 inches from the Monarchs.

I love the material and color, I also like that these pants have belt loops in addition to the string closure. The string closure is now on the inside of the waist and is useless if you are depending on it to hold your pants up.

The older version of the pants had a cargo pocket, the new version has a side zip pocket around the knee. The pocket is rather useless and not large enough to hold a passport.

The material is durable and the pants versatile, I wear them frequently but they haven't made the favorite list.

If you love these pants, stay away from wood stoves.

Prana bring back the previous version

The previous version of the Monarch had flap pockets on the legs. They are my fav pants ever. These fit tighter and now don't come in black!? Every one needs basic black. Please revive the older version.

Great for muscular thighed women!

I got these pants before my first hiking adventure. I was looking for convertible pants but was having issues in the thigh area. I'm an athletic girl, so finding a size 4 pant that would accommodate my runner/biker thighs was a challenge. These fit great and amazingly enough look great. Because a girl's got to look good on the trail too!

nice pants

These pants are the perfect weight for hiking and have nice stretch. I'm 5/8 and they're a little long on me.

Durable!

I have these pants and absolutely love them. I backcountry hike so I needed something versatile, something that allowed movement, and also very durable since I hike through brush and tough terrain. These pants are perfect and really cute too! They dont make my butt look saggy and their low rise is flattering---not that I need that in the wilderness, but hey--its nice anyway :)

Durable!

Love, love these pants!!!

These are the best pants! I'm a personal trainer and I have never gotten more compliments then I do when I wear these pants. A national renowned, TV fitness personality actually stopped me at a fitness convention to tell me how much she liked them & wanted to know where I got them. So many of my clients have ordered these and love them as well. They look fantastic, very flattering, yet they're athletic pants. My only wish is that they would come in more colors like black, tan...I would purchase them all.

I LOVE these pants. More than any other pants I have ever owned. I am 5'9" with a thin athletic build and these pants fit me around the waist AND have a long enough inseam. Amazingly comfortable for hiking, bouldering, long climbs, or just wearing around on the weekends. Tall women - BUY THESE.

Love these pants!

I got these pants for a hiking trip to Zion National Park. I was so impressed with the fact that they stayed clean, despite the number if times I was sitting in sand, dirt and on red rock. I am 5'3" and weight about 105 lbs, I ordered the size 2 (no 0 available), they were slightly big in the waist, but the drawstring helped with that. I love the material and found that it did not restrict me in any way and was very comfortable. The only thing I would prefer would be to have zippers at the bottom for taking off the bottoms over my boots. They did fit over the boots, but it was very snug. I am also a yogi and these were flexible enough for me to do some yoga postures while out on the trails, and to top it off, they looked great!

Just about perfect!

I was looking for a non-fugly pair of travel pants. prAna pants fit me just right every time, and these are no exception. Cute, flattering, comfortable, great length for my long legs, etc. The length at zip-off may be slightly weird (just at the knee) but I like the fact that unzipped they will be slightly more modest for my international travels. I was a little perplexed at first by the internal waist tie but I think that will be very handy for my travel weight fluctuations. LOVE 'EM! And as always great customer service by backcountry.com!

Always complimented on these pants! Best pants ever!

I wear these pants constantly. They are the most comfortable pants I own, due to stretchiness and are fitted in the right places. I get compliments at least once a week on how nicely they are cut, the cute back pockets, the quality of the fabric, etc. I was thinking of buying another type of Prana pants, but after reading reviews, I will just stick with what I know to be the best pant out there. The inside tie-string makes the pants fit just as needed. The only "con" is that after wearing them and washing them twice a week for a year, some of the "spandexy" threads are beginning come through on the knees, though you have to get really close to the fabric to see it. I imagine these will continue to be my go-to pants for at least another year or two, whether hiking (very "breathy"), canoeing (they dry fast), eating out, traveling, or frolicking with the kiddos. Best. Pants. Ever.

You need these pants

I took these pants out consecutively for four weekends: hiking, climbing, bouldering, and canyoneering. They handled every activity well. They are comfortable, dry fast, and are easy to move in. I loved them so much that I bought a second pair. Not only are they comfortable and functional they also fit well and look great.
