In love!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large

I bought two pairs of these for a trip to Patagonia and fell in love.
I have since used them for climbing, hiking , and everything in between. Super comfortable and convert between pants and shorts easily. They do tend to run a bit large, but the drawstring in the waistband is a life saver!

In love!

Comfortable, functional, and tough

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I ordered these in a 6 because that was all that was available at the time, but I wish I would have been able to get a 4! I'm 5'6'', 130 lbs and these are very roomy on me. The inner drawstring is a lifesaver though, otherwise these would be hard to wear. At least I can fit layers underneath them now that the weather is cooling off.

Apart from being the wrong size, these are awesome pants. Very comfortable, but also tough. These outperformed many other convertible pants I tried, and I used these extensively while trekking "Down Under". They held up to all kinds of abuse, so much so I call them my "Adventure Pants".

I definitely recommend these pants and I would purchase them again when my current pairs wears out. But, I will be ordering a size down next time.

Adorable!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I absolutely love these pants! Not only are they completely comfortable but they are super cute! I do know about you, but I love being able to wear more feminine like clothes when i'm camping and/or hiking so these pants are perfect. I fit in the size 2 and then run a little big but that's what the draw strings are for on the inside and I love that I can wear so long johns underneath.

Comfortable and flattering!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I have been on the hunt for a good pair of convertible pants for an upcoming international trip where we will be doing a lot of walking/hiking in humid climates. I ordered these in two sizes and kept the 6 (5',130b.) They are super comfortable, lightweight fabric and actually flattering for this type of pant. I have tested the zipper to turn them into shorts and it is very easy to take on and off. These will definitely be my go to pants for errand running Saturdays and outdoor activities. I did notice on the third day worn (without washing) they were stretched out a bit, like mentioned in the other reviews, but this didn't bother me enough to lower my rating. Would definitely recommend.

LOVE these pants!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I just ordered my second pair of these beauties after about 1.5 years of loving my first so much. The material is stretchy, durable, and water resistant - food and water just drips right off. They hold up during consecutive days of use, and though they do get a little baggy after a few days of lunging and playing, the drawstring waist allows for you to keep 'em up between washes. The style is also cute enough that I feel stoked wearing them around town after a hike. Butt is also super flattering! First pair of convertible paints I've found to actually be functional and cute!

Tough guys!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I have a few pairs of these pants, I'm still rocking a pair that are 3 years old and have been climbed and hiked in for weeks! I prefer them for hiking rather than climbing, mostly because the seam where the zipper is under the knee really bugs me. I have a 2 regular and am about 120lbs and 5'8" they're a touch too big but I'm incredibly narrow in my hips. The length is perfect! I can't honestly say I've ever used the convertible feature so I don't know how easy they are to zip apart and back together again. All in all a great quality product from Prana as usual!!

My husband loves hiking behind me

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I've probably had at least 5 different brands/styles of convertible pants over the years, and this pair is by far my favorite. Love the real button closure and interior tie, and the fact that the legs are wide enough to pull off over my shoes. They fit pretty true to size for me, though I agree with the other reviewer that they stretch out a bit after a few days of backpacking. I also agree that these pants make my butt look awesome! Seriously, my husband says it every time I put them on. Definite keepers, though I'm bummed mine already have a few pitch stains...the price of loving trees, I guess.

Good but not great.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

These pants are great but rather big on me. I'm 5'4" and lots of comments said they were fitting. But I've found that the waist and legs are too big. I have space for leggings under and then some so that's the only disappointment I have. Otherwise, the length is fine, the material is great, and overall they are really comfortable. The pockets are nice too, including the zip pocket on the leg.

I love these

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I love these pants, they fit true to size but do stretch out over a few days of backpacking, however it does have a waist tie (yahoo) I am 5'9 and bought the longs they work great with my boots when backpacking however they are to long and I have to roll them when I wear them with my chacos around town. they have taken a pretty good beating and held up pretty well, I did trip while stepping over trailer hitched up, i had my pants vented I did break off a couple of the zipper teeth, however to my shock they are still working... these pants look great, many of my other backpacking pants I HATE how they make my butt look, it just looks big and old LOL (ok so it maybe it is) but in these pants i don't feel like i need to walk to in the back of a group. I just hope that these go on sale so that I can buy a few more colors.

Responded on

I just wanted to add I just got back from my best friends place and I had these pants on and she was like omg I love these pants... later she's like ya know I have to get a pair of these your butt looks really good

A guide's opinion.....

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I bought these pants when they were on sale a year ago(2013). I like to wait to write a review so I can give a fairly thorough assessment. After one year, these pants are in 'like new' condition; not because they didn't get worn but because they are well made. I work full time at an outfitter in Texas so I think the clothes I wear get put to the test.
THE MATERIAL: holds up, water resistant, nice stretch (I can squat down without getting painful pinch points in the hips), stain & tear resistant as well and an added plus - if you live in the south, they are quite cool (think temperature).
LENGTH: I am 5'9.5" with a 36" inseam and I am comfortable with the length of these pants in a size 4R. If the tall had been in stock at the time I would have bought those but alas no such luck, I was forced to get the regular. Obviously the tall would be choice for me but I am happy with my regulars (have a friend who is 5'6" with slightly shorter legs, maybe 33-34" inseam, who wore them and they were a perfect fit).
ZIP OFF: The zip off leg is a plus. While I prefer pants that tie or have the elastic band so I can choose my own length, these are nice in that they zip off at a capri length and not mid thigh. The zipper does not rub constantly like in many other zip offs but I do feel it here and there on the right leg. One bad thing - which I think is related to the wrong length - the zipper does irritate when I squat but only when the leg is off. The zipper being on the lower leg helps because I tend to find that zippers on the upper legs ALWAYS rub.
WAISTBAND: perfect! I have a rather 'perky' butt so for me it is difficult to find pants that don't go straight up. If you have a butt and a smaller waist these pants are a nice fit.
FIT: These pants fit slightly loose through the legs, which I like but some people may not. This looser fit keeps me cool in the hot + humid SETX weather. The waist fit however is perfect!
OVERALL: Great pants, would buy again!

A guide's opinion.....

These seem great

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

A great weight/thickness, these will be good for long hikes when summer arrives. There is a good amount of stretch in them. They are a little large - I'm 5'3, 135lbs and got size 8/reg but I wanted them a bit big so I can wear tights underneath.

Love these pants!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

I wish I had bought these pants years ago! I love them so much. I'll wear them over any other pants I have even if they are dirty. I'm 5'4", 140 lbs, 28-inch waist, 41-inch hips, and a 30-inch inseam, and I got the 8 Regular and they fit a just a bit big (just because they are quite stretchy) and they are the perfect length for my preference. They are comfortable to move in, easy to zip the bottoms off, and they wash really well. And they handle the rigors of outdoor activity super well.

Functional and reasonably attractive.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

Agree with other reviewers that these pants run a bit large. I am 5'9"/155 lbs. and usually wear 10/L but ordered 8 based on other reviews. The fit of the 8 is snug but comfortable as there is a lot of stretch. Also agree with others that the front pockets are not particularly functional - they are shallow and even small things like your lip balm or hanky can fall out when you are walking. The zip pocket on the leg can fit an iphone (but if you are sweating it will get damp). An iphone in a plastic bag is a tighter fit there; I successfully carried my phone in a plastic bag in a rear pocket, which buttons closed. Was very happy about the convertible aspect of these pants. They were great for walking through brush but when it got warm I could take off the lower legs. Agree with other commenters that the shorts hit at a kind of funny knee length and the zipper area rubbed at the knee (I covered a bit of sharp zipper seam edge with moleskin). I rolled them up twice to wear more comfortably as shorts.
Otherwise quite happy with these hiking pants.

Even better than expected!!!

  • Gender: Female
  • Fit: True to size

I am 5'10" and searched for women's TALL hiking pants and found that the prAna Monarch pant was exactly what I was looking for. I reviewed them on the prAna site and also found them on Amazon (full price), but luckily I was also directed to this site--and got them ON SALE. I ordered a pair and received them within a few days. When I tried them on, they fit me PERFECTLY. They are lightweight and well made, with a little stretch that makes them comfy...I LOVED THEM SO MUCH, I called and ordered a second pair. Going hiking in the red rocks of Sedona and I will be stylin' with my new convertible pants!

My Go-To Pants!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

These things are great!! They are very flattering for the curves of your body, and the shorts zipper is low enough that it doesn't cut off circulation to your thigh. The material is very stretchy, and after a couple months you will be relying heavily on the chord tie on the inside of the pant, so size down as much as you can. I love these pants because they do everything: They're great for climbing, crack climbing, hiking, casual pants, or even a casual work environment. Since owning a couple pairs, I've even converted a few girlfriends to wearing them, and now I always see them wearing them too! If I had a pair for every day of the week, I'd be a happy girl.

Awesome!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

These convertible pants are super functional & great looking! In my opinion they seem to run a little big. But they are made very well & they are perfect length both ways!

Good fit, gets the job done

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large

I have two pairs of these, one that I have taken out on climbs, hikes and snow climbs multiple times. They are great pants, with a little room for improvement in some areas.

Fit:I love that these pants have some stretch and seem to fit me even if I gain or lose some weight. They are slim through the hips, but would probably stretch out a little if needed. They also have a drawstring cord for adjustability. I would recommend getting the smallest size that fits because they do stretch.

Material: The DWR treatment is great on these. I hike in the snow with them and rarely get wet. It's not waterproof, but if you aren't sitting in snow, they work. They are however really warm in the summer. I have another pair without the DWR that's much better on warm days.

Technical Features: Its always nice to have convertible pants. That said, I would rather the version of these with the DWR not be convertible. They are way too hot for any situation where I would want to wear shorts and the zippers are cold around my legs in the snow.

Durability: Average. They seem to have lasted for me, but do look worn after a while.

Areas for Improvement: Waist band. Every time I wear this with a heavy pack, the draw string in the waist band rubs into my skin and leaves a rash. Part of the problem is that after a while, the material is so stretchy that the drawstring has to be tightened to keep the pants up. Then the drawstring rubs under the hip belt of a pack. Not a problem if you are using them for other purposes or for shorter duration and washing and drying them before they stretch.
