My husband loves hiking behind me

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I've probably had at least 5 different brands/styles of convertible pants over the years, and this pair is by far my favorite. Love the real button closure and interior tie, and the fact that the legs are wide enough to pull off over my shoes. They fit pretty true to size for me, though I agree with the other reviewer that they stretch out a bit after a few days of backpacking. I also agree that these pants make my butt look awesome! Seriously, my husband says it every time I put them on. Definite keepers, though I'm bummed mine already have a few pitch stains...the price of loving trees, I guess.

Good but not great.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

These pants are great but rather big on me. I'm 5'4" and lots of comments said they were fitting. But I've found that the waist and legs are too big. I have space for leggings under and then some so that's the only disappointment I have. Otherwise, the length is fine, the material is great, and overall they are really comfortable. The pockets are nice too, including the zip pocket on the leg.

I love these

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I love these pants, they fit true to size but do stretch out over a few days of backpacking, however it does have a waist tie (yahoo) I am 5'9 and bought the longs they work great with my boots when backpacking however they are to long and I have to roll them when I wear them with my chacos around town. they have taken a pretty good beating and held up pretty well, I did trip while stepping over trailer hitched up, i had my pants vented I did break off a couple of the zipper teeth, however to my shock they are still working... these pants look great, many of my other backpacking pants I HATE how they make my butt look, it just looks big and old LOL (ok so it maybe it is) but in these pants i don't feel like i need to walk to in the back of a group. I just hope that these go on sale so that I can buy a few more colors.

A guide's opinion.....

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I bought these pants when they were on sale a year ago(2013). I like to wait to write a review so I can give a fairly thorough assessment. After one year, these pants are in 'like new' condition; not because they didn't get worn but because they are well made. I work full time at an outfitter in Texas so I think the clothes I wear get put to the test.
THE MATERIAL: holds up, water resistant, nice stretch (I can squat down without getting painful pinch points in the hips), stain & tear resistant as well and an added plus - if you live in the south, they are quite cool (think temperature).
LENGTH: I am 5'9.5" with a 36" inseam and I am comfortable with the length of these pants in a size 4R. If the tall had been in stock at the time I would have bought those but alas no such luck, I was forced to get the regular. Obviously the tall would be choice for me but I am happy with my regulars (have a friend who is 5'6" with slightly shorter legs, maybe 33-34" inseam, who wore them and they were a perfect fit).
ZIP OFF: The zip off leg is a plus. While I prefer pants that tie or have the elastic band so I can choose my own length, these are nice in that they zip off at a capri length and not mid thigh. The zipper does not rub constantly like in many other zip offs but I do feel it here and there on the right leg. One bad thing - which I think is related to the wrong length - the zipper does irritate when I squat but only when the leg is off. The zipper being on the lower leg helps because I tend to find that zippers on the upper legs ALWAYS rub.
WAISTBAND: perfect! I have a rather 'perky' butt so for me it is difficult to find pants that don't go straight up. If you have a butt and a smaller waist these pants are a nice fit.
FIT: These pants fit slightly loose through the legs, which I like but some people may not. This looser fit keeps me cool in the hot + humid SETX weather. The waist fit however is perfect!
OVERALL: Great pants, would buy again!

These seem great

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

A great weight/thickness, these will be good for long hikes when summer arrives. There is a good amount of stretch in them. They are a little large - I'm 5'3, 135lbs and got size 8/reg but I wanted them a bit big so I can wear tights underneath.

Love these pants!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

I wish I had bought these pants years ago! I love them so much. I'll wear them over any other pants I have even if they are dirty. I'm 5'4", 140 lbs, 28-inch waist, 41-inch hips, and a 30-inch inseam, and I got the 8 Regular and they fit a just a bit big (just because they are quite stretchy) and they are the perfect length for my preference. They are comfortable to move in, easy to zip the bottoms off, and they wash really well. And they handle the rigors of outdoor activity super well.

Functional and reasonably attractive.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

Agree with other reviewers that these pants run a bit large. I am 5'9"/155 lbs. and usually wear 10/L but ordered 8 based on other reviews. The fit of the 8 is snug but comfortable as there is a lot of stretch. Also agree with others that the front pockets are not particularly functional - they are shallow and even small things like your lip balm or hanky can fall out when you are walking. The zip pocket on the leg can fit an iphone (but if you are sweating it will get damp). An iphone in a plastic bag is a tighter fit there; I successfully carried my phone in a plastic bag in a rear pocket, which buttons closed. Was very happy about the convertible aspect of these pants. They were great for walking through brush but when it got warm I could take off the lower legs. Agree with other commenters that the shorts hit at a kind of funny knee length and the zipper area rubbed at the knee (I covered a bit of sharp zipper seam edge with moleskin). I rolled them up twice to wear more comfortably as shorts.
Otherwise quite happy with these hiking pants.

Even better than expected!!!

  • Gender: Female
  • Fit: True to size

I am 5'10" and searched for women's TALL hiking pants and found that the prAna Monarch pant was exactly what I was looking for. I reviewed them on the prAna site and also found them on Amazon (full price), but luckily I was also directed to this site--and got them ON SALE. I ordered a pair and received them within a few days. When I tried them on, they fit me PERFECTLY. They are lightweight and well made, with a little stretch that makes them comfy...I LOVED THEM SO MUCH, I called and ordered a second pair. Going hiking in the red rocks of Sedona and I will be stylin' with my new convertible pants!

My Go-To Pants!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

These things are great!! They are very flattering for the curves of your body, and the shorts zipper is low enough that it doesn't cut off circulation to your thigh. The material is very stretchy, and after a couple months you will be relying heavily on the chord tie on the inside of the pant, so size down as much as you can. I love these pants because they do everything: They're great for climbing, crack climbing, hiking, casual pants, or even a casual work environment. Since owning a couple pairs, I've even converted a few girlfriends to wearing them, and now I always see them wearing them too! If I had a pair for every day of the week, I'd be a happy girl.

Awesome!

These convertible pants are super functional & great looking! In my opinion they seem to run a little big. But they are made very well & they are perfect length both ways!

Good fit, gets the job done

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large

I have two pairs of these, one that I have taken out on climbs, hikes and snow climbs multiple times. They are great pants, with a little room for improvement in some areas.

Fit:I love that these pants have some stretch and seem to fit me even if I gain or lose some weight. They are slim through the hips, but would probably stretch out a little if needed. They also have a drawstring cord for adjustability. I would recommend getting the smallest size that fits because they do stretch.

Material: The DWR treatment is great on these. I hike in the snow with them and rarely get wet. It's not waterproof, but if you aren't sitting in snow, they work. They are however really warm in the summer. I have another pair without the DWR that's much better on warm days.

Technical Features: Its always nice to have convertible pants. That said, I would rather the version of these with the DWR not be convertible. They are way too hot for any situation where I would want to wear shorts and the zippers are cold around my legs in the snow.

Durability: Average. They seem to have lasted for me, but do look worn after a while.

Areas for Improvement: Waist band. Every time I wear this with a heavy pack, the draw string in the waist band rubs into my skin and leaves a rash. Part of the problem is that after a while, the material is so stretchy that the drawstring has to be tightened to keep the pants up. Then the drawstring rubs under the hip belt of a pack. Not a problem if you are using them for other purposes or for shorter duration and washing and drying them before they stretch.

Style with funtion

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I am a biker, and hiker, and love to finish the day with friends. This pant helps! with the zipoff right above the knee I can bike with no catches and tear, and go into the office wearing pants. I am able to go on a muddy hike, zip on my pants after, and meet up with pals! They fit great and are super cute!

OK, but gets pulls in fabric easily.

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Used these as my only pare of pants on a trip to South America and although the zip-off convertible action was awesome, and they fit pretty well, they ended chaffing my inner thighs pretty badly. When I washed them by hand, they took forever to dry and the stretchy fabric made it nearly impossible to remove clinging grass seeds. Every time I tried to remove a seed, the fabric would develop a huge pull. A real bummer. Other than that, they do have a flattering fit and the length of the shorts when unzipped are nice. Would be better if they had cargo pockets.

These Pants Work Hard!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I own 2 pairs, now buying 2 more. The material in my 2nd pair is stronger. I've worn these pants trekking in Patagonia and the Amazon. I wear them to do trail work in, carrying saws, axes, pulaskis, dirty tools. They clean well. They fit well so I can actually feel like I might look pretty good while doing all this! LOVE my prAnas!!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I have a few of these pants and I cannot say enough good about them. Comfortable right out of the washer, better than yoga pants and definitely more durable. They have taken their beating on many trail and summit hikes getting rubbed and abraded on and they still look and feel great.

The tech specs shows a variety of inseams,...

The tech specs shows a variety of inseams, but in the drop-down box I do not see options for inseam size. Are these all "regular"?

tough and great looking

I wore two pairs of these pants for two years in Afghanistan. I also wore them in many climates on vacations. These pants are bulletproof and have a fantastic fit. My favorite features of these pants include: comfortable, tons of pockets, hot weather necessity, moisture wicking, quick drying, stain resistant, wrinkle resistant and versatile.

Flattering hiking pants

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Flattering hiking pants... no longer an oxymoron! I haven't worn them out hiking yet, but after a couple hours (seriously) of trying on pants in different sizes and inseams, this was the one that fit me best, so I'm in love already. At 5'2" I tend to be in between petite and regular inseam length, and prefer the rise of petite pants when possible. I tried a variety of TNF, REI, Columbia convertible and pant styles with limited success. I was able to snag a pair of these in 0 Short and they were perfect and by far the most flattering pair of hiking pants I tried on. A little roomy at the waist, but there's an internal drawstring tie as well as belt loops. Fitted but not tight through the hip, and slim fitting through the thigh, but with enough ease to allow movement (another feat, as my legs seem to be more muscular than most brands allow for based on my waist and hip measurements). The length is short enough to not drag on the ground while wearing my hiking boots, but long enough to not look like floods if I'm wearing them with sandals or sneakers. My hips are 34.5", my low waist-at belly button- is about 26.25," so I'd say these run true to the size chart. The zip-off leg wasn't a feature I was looking for, and the knicker length is not a style I would typically seek out, but who knows maybe I will be happy to have that option while hiking. This was my first Prana purchase, but I'm looking forward to adding more to my collection. I will report back after wearing them hiking in Yosemite and Sequoia National Forest next week.

*9/22: Sadly(?) the weather was more summer-like than expected, and I opted to wear shorts for our hikes, so I didn't get to test these out yet as planned.
