Flattering relaxed-fit pants that convert into knickers.

Whether you're embarking on a journey through South America or a hike in your neighborhood, rely on the comfort and versatility of the Prana Women's Monarch Convertible Pant. Its lower legs easily zip off and provide a knicker-length pant when the temperatures start to heat up. Thanks to its stretchy Zion fabric, the Monarch supplies light water resistance during a sunshower or when you accidentally spill some water during a turbulent flight. Its relaxed fit and standard rise also give a comfortable, flattering appearance when you travel or run errands around town.

  • Zion fabric (nylon and spandex fabric blend with DWR finish)
  • Relaxed fit with standard rise
  • Convertible pant zips off to knicker length
  • Internal drawstring with zipper fly
  • Front and back patch pockets

My Go-To Pants!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

These things are great!! They are very flattering for the curves of your body, and the shorts zipper is low enough that it doesn't cut off circulation to your thigh. The material is very stretchy, and after a couple months you will be relying heavily on the chord tie on the inside of the pant, so size down as much as you can. I love these pants because they do everything: They're great for climbing, crack climbing, hiking, casual pants, or even a casual work environment. Since owning a couple pairs, I've even converted a few girlfriends to wearing them, and now I always see them wearing them too! If I had a pair for every day of the week, I'd be a happy girl.

  • Fit: Runs large

These convertible pants are super functional & great looking! In my opinion they seem to run a little big. But they are made very well & they are perfect length both ways!

Good fit, gets the job done

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large

I have two pairs of these, one that I have taken out on climbs, hikes and snow climbs multiple times. They are great pants, with a little room for improvement in some areas.

Fit:I love that these pants have some stretch and seem to fit me even if I gain or lose some weight. They are slim through the hips, but would probably stretch out a little if needed. They also have a drawstring cord for adjustability. I would recommend getting the smallest size that fits because they do stretch.

Material: The DWR treatment is great on these. I hike in the snow with them and rarely get wet. It's not waterproof, but if you aren't sitting in snow, they work. They are however really warm in the summer. I have another pair without the DWR that's much better on warm days.

Technical Features: Its always nice to have convertible pants. That said, I would rather the version of these with the DWR not be convertible. They are way too hot for any situation where I would want to wear shorts and the zippers are cold around my legs in the snow.

Durability: Average. They seem to have lasted for me, but do look worn after a while.

Areas for Improvement: Waist band. Every time I wear this with a heavy pack, the draw string in the waist band rubs into my skin and leaves a rash. Part of the problem is that after a while, the material is so stretchy that the drawstring has to be tightened to keep the pants up. Then the drawstring rubs under the hip belt of a pack. Not a problem if you are using them for other purposes or for shorter duration and washing and drying them before they stretch.

Style with funtion

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I am a biker, and hiker, and love to finish the day with friends. This pant helps! with the zipoff right above the knee I can bike with no catches and tear, and go into the office wearing pants. I am able to go on a muddy hike, zip on my pants after, and meet up with pals! They fit great and are super cute!

OK, but gets pulls in fabric easily.

Used these as my only pare of pants on a trip to South America and although the zip-off convertible action was awesome, and they fit pretty well, they ended chaffing my inner thighs pretty badly. When I washed them by hand, they took forever to dry and the stretchy fabric made it nearly impossible to remove clinging grass seeds. Every time I tried to remove a seed, the fabric would develop a huge pull. A real bummer. Other than that, they do have a flattering fit and the length of the shorts when unzipped are nice. Would be better if they had cargo pockets.

These Pants Work Hard!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I own 2 pairs, now buying 2 more. The material in my 2nd pair is stronger. I've worn these pants trekking in Patagonia and the Amazon. I wear them to do trail work in, carrying saws, axes, pulaskis, dirty tools. They clean well. They fit well so I can actually feel like I might look pretty good while doing all this! LOVE my prAnas!!

I have a few of these pants and I cannot say enough good about them. Comfortable right out of the washer, better than yoga pants and definitely more durable. They have taken their beating on many trail and summit hikes getting rubbed and abraded on and they still look and feel great.

The tech specs shows a variety of inseams, but in the drop-down box I do not see options for inseam size. Are these all "regular"?

Responded on

These are all indeed regular length inseams.

I wore two pairs of these pants for two years in Afghanistan. I also wore them in many climates on vacations. These pants are bulletproof and have a fantastic fit. My favorite features of these pants include: comfortable, tons of pockets, hot weather necessity, moisture wicking, quick drying, stain resistant, wrinkle resistant and versatile.

Flattering hiking pants

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Flattering hiking pants... no longer an oxymoron! I haven't worn them out hiking yet, but after a couple hours (seriously) of trying on pants in different sizes and inseams, this was the one that fit me best, so I'm in love already. At 5'2" I tend to be in between petite and regular inseam length, and prefer the rise of petite pants when possible. I tried a variety of TNF, REI, Columbia convertible and pant styles with limited success. I was able to snag a pair of these in 0 Short and they were perfect and by far the most flattering pair of hiking pants I tried on. A little roomy at the waist, but there's an internal drawstring tie as well as belt loops. Fitted but not tight through the hip, and slim fitting through the thigh, but with enough ease to allow movement (another feat, as my legs seem to be more muscular than most brands allow for based on my waist and hip measurements). The length is short enough to not drag on the ground while wearing my hiking boots, but long enough to not look like floods if I'm wearing them with sandals or sneakers. My hips are 34.5", my low waist-at belly button- is about 26.25," so I'd say these run true to the size chart. The zip-off leg wasn't a feature I was looking for, and the knicker length is not a style I would typically seek out, but who knows maybe I will be happy to have that option while hiking. This was my first Prana purchase, but I'm looking forward to adding more to my collection. I will report back after wearing them hiking in Yosemite and Sequoia National Forest next week.

*9/22: Sadly(?) the weather was more summer-like than expected, and I opted to wear shorts for our hikes, so I didn't get to test these out yet as planned.
