The super-lightweight POC Spine Ergo Armor protects your back from any sudden impacts while you ski down the headwall at Mach speed or gap-jump your bike in Moab. The Ergo Armor offers shoulder straps and a height-adjustable, flexible waistband system for an individual fit. The polypropylene back plate with an inner shock-absorbing core protects your precious spine from harsh crashes. For added protection, snap-on the cervical top and coccyx bottom plates.

Bottom Line: You won’t leave home without the Spine Ergo.

How much does this stick out on the back? I use a low profile camelback and fear the combo will make me look like quisimoto and have me falling off chairlifts.

The VPD pad is about 1.75 - 2 inches in thickness. When it warms to your body temp, it will conform to fit your natural spinal/rib cage curvature. This keeps the 'hump-back' look at a minimum. However, with the addition of a camelback & bladder, you will most likely have that 'Quasimodo' look. Probably won't be enough to make ya fall off the chairlift, though. haha

POC did just release a new Spine VPD vest that is co-branded with Hydrapak and has a removable bladder built in, but I don't know if it is available for retail just yet.

yup. the VPD insert can be removed and the vest can then be thrown in the wash. Gentle cycle, warm water. you can probably air dry it.

A Ski Bum's Take: POC VPD Spine Vest

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete
March 28, 2010

I have worn this every day this 2010 winter season. It can be a little cold and stiff first thing in the morning, but by the first run, my body heat warms it up and I don't even feel it for the rest of the day. The only thing I would fix would be to make it a little longer so that it could grip lower around my waist, thereby preventing it from riding up during long hikes or excessive movement.

I have tumbled through rocks, trees and hard snow/ice conditions so far this winter, and I have to admit, the VPD has really worked well. I used to wear the plastic-capped turtle-shell style back protectors, and even if they stayed in the right place on my back, they wouldn't absorb near as much impact. VPD gets a big thumbs up from this ski bum!

Most comfortable back protector

I've tried a bunch of different ones and this is by far the most comfortable, and for that reason the only one I don't mind wearing. I can put this one on and pretty much forget about it, which is what i've been looking for in a back protector.

I'm 6' (72") right on the edge of M -> L/XL... don't want the BP to be poking me in the neck... anyone have any insight as to whether I should "go big"?

I'm 5'9 140lbs and rock the small. I prefer my impact pro to be super snug so it stays in place if/when I eat crap. Therefore, I'd opt for the smaller one. Or pick up both and return the one that doesn't measure up for you. We've got that 100% guarantee return policy. Feel free to use it!

Is this the 2010 version? The picture doesn't show the adjustable shoulder straps, could you describe them? Could you upload pictures or describe the cervical top and coccyx bottom plates?

Joe-

This is indeed the 2010 version; I used it all winter long and it is the most comfortable back protector I've ever used. It is soft when worn even in cold temperatures, due to the heat from the body. This makes it bend and flex with your body's motion as you shred hard on the slopes.

There are no adjustable shoulder straps, so a proper fit is needed. I am about 5'9" and 175lbs, and I use the medium sizing. I don't think there are any cervical or coccyx plates available with this specific POC protector. Check out the Spine Ergo BUG for something that would be more easily modified to that aim.
