    Like a hot knife.

When the number one thing on your mind is aerodynamics, the number one thing on your head should be the POC Octal Aero Raceday helmet. The Octal foregoes vents in favor of aerodynamic efficiency. To make up for the vents, POC lined the Octal with Coolbest pads, which promote airflow and manage moisture to keep your dome dry and cool.

Safety considerations are handled by POC’s impact-dispersing unibody polycarbonate construction and strategically mapped EPS foam. POC also molded the straps directly into the liner for aerodynamics, comfort, and durability. Size adjustments are made with a twist of the adjustment dial.

    Survived crash with this helmet

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: large

I am now on my 2nd POC Octal helmet. First one I crashed on my bike, and yes, my head did hit the pavement. This helmet protected my noggin. The helmet had scrapes and the Styrofoam compressed on the front left corner of the helmet, but the plastic outer shell was never perforated by the pavement. So protection of your head, which is the most important thing with a helmet passed my usage test.

As for the helmet usability, I also give it high marks. it is areo without the need to keep your head in a tucked areo position all the time and end up with a sore neck.
Ventilation is also very good. Never had an issue in heat, and I've used it for ironman's in the middle of summer.

how is the ventilation with this helmet?

I've had the regular Octal Aero since fall. It's got a one central vent, which I think this lacks. Heat doesn't usually bug me, but days in the 80s have me wishing for a more ventilated model. So a POC w/ zero vents? Can't imagine it beyond short TTs or chilly temps.

My head circumference is in between sizes. Do the size numbers have adjustability outside the specified range? Just wondering because I occasionally wear a hat under my helmet.

I doubt there is much room outside the specified range (it's a pretty generous range on the sizing chart). I just ordered a Large for a 58 cm noggin and the feel is great and comfortable, but the fit is just a little big and I'm going to compare it with a medium. I'd say, especially for aero purposes, go with the smallest helmet that is still in your appropriate measurement range. Unless you have a really bulky hat, of course. (then just measure outside the hat while wearing it)
