Easy to remove, clean, and use.
A quick-disconnect fit on the end of the Platypus Big Zip LP Hydration Bladder's drink tube means you can easily remove the water reservoir from your pack without re-routing the drink tube, while the SlideLock closure prevents the wrist-tweaking that usually accompanies threaded closures. Platypus made this bladder with BPA-free material and added a SlimeGuard antimicrobial treatment to the inside. An angled shutoff valve helps prevent leaking after you take a swig.

Great hydration bag
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
Got this bag to use mountain biking, and hiking. It hasn't disappointed with repeated use. I would highly recommend this product!

The quick disconnect hose with this bladder is a great feature. This bladder packs up small and the mouthpiece is nice too. Awesome product!
Platypus Hydration
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
This thing comes with me almost everywhere. It comes with me on long trail runs, ski days, hikes, and even sometimes in my work bag (a hydration-compatible backpack). I love how easy it is to fill, clean, and dry. The mouthpiece is pretty good about not spilling water when it bumps against me or my pack, like other bladders have been known to. I wouldn't change a single thing about this bladder!
WONDERFUL AND FAST DRYING
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
I bought this after I had a camelbak 100oz reservoir start leaking. I was first going to buy another Camelbak until I saw someone using a Platypus bag at this concert I was at. I checked it out and immediately loved how small it can fold down into and how easy it is to refill and close. I also really like how the hose clicks in and attaches to the bag and that the bag doesn't leak when the hose is off it. There's no taste to the water unlike what I found with the camelbak after having the water sit in there for a few hours. It's super easy to slide the handle off, unlike the hassle found when trying to twist off/on the camelbak top. Overall I love this reservoir and would probably stick with this brand from now on.
Nice Buy!
Great!durable! Happy with purchase!
Unique
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
I brought this in my pack on a week-long elk hunt in Colorado. Never really heard of these things before but did a little research on options and chose this. I loved how easy it was to satisfy my thirst without removing the pack each time; one fill lasted me a day and a half in hot (for September) weather. I hung it in a specifically designed pocket. The bladder fills with out spilling due to the wide mouth. It cleans well for the same reason. Another thing I like about it is how small and light it is to pack when not in use. Thank you Platypus.
Best Hydration Bladder Ever
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
Used this bladder on a 8 day backcountry trip, it worked flawless, the wide mouth is perfect for easily filling it up, and holds plenty of water for long multi day trips. Added a quick disconnect to fill it without taking it out of my pack, highly recommend it!
Big Zip? Genius!
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
Why hasn't anyone thought of this? This is the only kind of bladder I would spend money on. The function is amazing. Tip it upside down when you first fill up and you will see. Easy to put in ice if you are going out for the day and want to keep cold. And as far as cleaning goes it couldn't be much easier. I leave mine in the freezer when im not using it so as to keep it as clean as possible so that the moisture wont get the bladder clean.
Great Taste
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
No taste of plastic like my old water bladder.
Convenient access to my water.
I even fell backwards onto my pack with a full bladder and no leaks with the sudden impact.
I'm glad I bought it!
- Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I've only had the Platypus Big Zip 2L for a short time, but so far I'm very happy I bought it. I always thought hydration bladders would make the water taste like plastic. But, I see more and more hikers using them so I decided to try it. The bag seals great and there is no plastic taste to the water.
Top of the line
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
For the longest time, I refused to use a hydration bladder: I thought water bottles were better. Big mistake!
I finally started using them, and what a difference!
I tried other brands, mainly Camelback and Osprey, but the Platypus Big Zip is a super duper beyond perfect hydration system.
I use the 2 Liter in my Deuter ACT Trail 28 SL, which the pack I use to work in camp.
I use the 3 Liter in my Osprey Kestrel 32, which is the pack I use for psycho brutal insane day hikes or I use the 3 Liter in my Osprey Kestrel 58 multi day trips.
The pouch itself is puncture resistant. It has a wide industrial strength zip lock mouth that is very easy to fill or clean, and a "tool" (for lack of a better word) that secures the zip shut and prevents leaks.
The low and narrow profile makes it a breeze to slide into the pack.
I absolutely love the quick disconnect, it's easy, secure and convenient.
And the bite valve is awesome because it allows more flows than the other bladders I've tried. It has a shut off setting to prevent leaks when you're not using it.
I can find absolutely nothing wrong with this one.
Some find the bite valve tough to use, I don't: I think it's an angle thing, you just need to familiarize yourself with it.
I have taken it hiking, backpacking, I have worked in camp with it, I have dropped it, kicked it, sat on it, slept on it when using my pack as a pillow, I have never ever had an issue with it.
No leaks, no punctures, no problems.
Great bladder
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
I have had the 2L for at least two or three years now and no issues at all. Bag seals great, hose is perfect length and mouth piece works pretty good. Take a little harder biting than other bags that I have used, but that does not really bother me.
Easy to clean, and easy to pack.
not fun when your pack and you are wet
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
well... I not my favorite. I would not say that this is a bad bag, I like how it closes it makes it easy for cleaning and filling. however I have had this bag leak more then once and get my pack soaked. I always keep my items in my pack in dry sacks so they have always been safe but it still does not help the pack being wet and weighing it down and then that getting your pants wet... never fun.
You can lead a horse to water...
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
Much better design than the first mover in this category. Doesn't leak like hump day and the mouth piece is just plain better.
Awesome bladder
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
Easy to clean, works, just make sure you put it in right side up! :)
The only hydration bladder to own
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
The simple top makes sealing the bladder a breeze. Never have had this bladder leak. No matter what I've done to it. Even when packing a bear canister and cramming my pack so there is no available room and putting much pressure on the bladder. The wide opening makes for easy cleaning as does the fact it comes apart easy. I've had cheap bladders, I've had one by the major competitor and nothing is as simple to use and clean as this.
GOAT IS GOOD
Got a couple nasty/rank camelback bladders that I didn?t care for properly and needed replacing. I have a geigerrig that is in good shape but I wanted a bigger bladder for a recent desert bikepack trip where I needed to carry a couple days worth of water before we could resupply. So I supplemented the 4L reservoir from the Platy Gravity filter I had with this 3L bladder. Holds water?can reach in easily to clean it out if needed (or wedge something in there to help it dry). Its lightweight for transporting when empty (lets face it, water is about the heaviest thing you?re going to carry when doing anything in the backcountry). Something of note for very specific needs---oversizing the bladder with a little less than its capacity in water lets you bend/fold/shape the bladder into some funky places. At different times over three days, the 3L and 4L both spent some time in my bike frame bag conforming to the triangle shape and around bike tubes and tools and a stove? Kept the excess water weight off my back, helped lower the center of gravity and held up (no leaks or punctures) even with all off road mileage including bouncing up and down some big elevation changes at speed.
Awesome!
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
Doesn't leak! Very good quality and easy to fill up.
It is GREAT! Just BUY IT!
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
Well made, and very heavy duty! Cascade Designs has the most liberal lifetime warranty ever! (Yes, I had to send it in after it got a pin prick in it, was "field repaired with a hot knife and a piece cut from the top corner material. They sent me a new one-no questions asked.) The large opening is great and I LOVE the detachable hose, because it has a valved connection so you can leave it off with it full. (The non-Zip model is cheaper but doesn't have this.) Very versatile. Just plain good stuff!
I wouldn't use anything else.
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
I've used a few different reservoirs in the past and this is by far my favorite. The big opening makes it really easy to clean out when you need to. The bite valve is sturdy and drip free. I love the quick disconnect hose, it makes it super easy to get in and out of my packs without messing with the hose. The quick disconnect parts are also compatible with my Katadyn Hiker Pro filter. I have had mine for about 3 years and it is still going strong.
what are the dimensions of these bladders?
Hey Heather,
Here are the dimensions
2.0 L - 7in x 18.5in/weight 5.5 ounces
3.0 L - 7.75in x 18.75in/weight 5.8 ounces

Can anyone comment on the flow from the valves between the Platypus and Deuter bladders? I have the UltraSpire bladder, which has great flow, but doesn't maintain pressure, so each time you want to drink you have to suck all the air out first. Terrible design, especially for runners.
The flow is great and it's easy to suck water. I don't recall having to suck any air at all. I've never used the Deuter bladder.
may I ask what is the advantage of this...
may I ask what is the advantage of this type of system over a normal water bottle or canteen??just curious..I mean water in your pack equals wet gear and clothing does it not??Im not new to packing, just to all these new gadgets...
A few advantages:
-- lighter weight to hold a larger volume of water
-- The flat nature of the bladder is easier to pack and, when empty, takes up almost no volume in a pack (unlike a bottle)
-- most packs hold these bladders at the ideal location for heavy gear (mid/high, centered, close to the back)
-- the tube makes it easier to hydrate while moving. ("handsfree")
-- The larger volume makes it easier when filtering/purifying water
-- I like to hang mine up on a tree in camp, at which point it becomes a gravity-fed "faucet" for anything I need.
All that said, I usually carry a bladder AND a 16oz insulated bottle. That gives me the versatility I like for drinking like a normal human, hot liquids, sharing, and my bottle serves as a tiny bear canister to store a midnight snack.
I just want to add that most packs these days have a hydration sleeve to keep your bladder separate from the rest of your gear and the only way your gear is going to get wet is if you puncture the bladder which has never happened to me or anybody that I know personally.
David and Wayne highlight great points. Weight is key, and this system is pretty light, even for a bladder. I personally own this system, and it does NOT leak (if used properly, of course). It even has a disconnect between the hose and bladder that allow you to remove/attach a full bladder with little (<1 tsp) to no water loss. I fully trust this bladder to keep everything dry.
its light and you can fit a lot of water in a small area. however you are right it does suck when it leaks and every once in awhile that does happen, and I have had it happen more often with this bag then I have with other bags. however it is always a good idea to keep anything that you don't want to get wet in a dry stuff sack.

Is the material the bladder is made of resistant towards boiling water, or will it change size due to temperature?
I have never put boiling water in my own platypus, but the people in the thread below seem to say they have had no detrimental effects from putting boiling water in theirs. sounds like you should be set to go.

Hey Steve, we didn't carry that Click Elite Pack, so I checked around online. I'm not sure exactly which model you have. If it was the Express model with the computer sleeve for 15" Laptop or iPad, you will have ample room for any of the 3 sized Platypus bladders.
The description of this bladder says "A...
The description of this bladder says "A quick-disconnect fit on the end of the Platypus Big Zip SL Hydration Bladder's drink tube means you can easily remove the water reservoir from your pack without re-routing the drink tube"... so does that mean I *don't* need to purchase the quick-disconnect kit ( http://www.backcountry.com/platypus-quick-disconnect-kit?ti=UExQIENhdDpIeWRyYXRpb246MDo2 ) in order to tidily disconnect the hose from the pack? ie... it's already set up as is?
Correct. No need to by the quick disconnect seperado. The disconnect that is sold separately is to modify other hydration bladders to have a disconnect valve at the base of the bladder. But this bladder already has one.

Hi Jaclyn,

If you plan to use the built in bladder pouch, the 3L bladder is going to be too large. If you want to keep it in the large compartment and aren't concerned with it moving around a bit, it would fit. I think you'll likely have a bit of trouble fitting a 3L in the designated pouch no matter which bladder you go with.

Can I use the new magnetic bite valve from my Osprey bladder with the Platypus Big Zip SL. Love the Osprey pack - don't like the bladder expect for the value. If I could make this switch this would make for hydration heaven... Thanks
Yes, that would be an easy modification. The hydration bladders all use a standard diameter tubing so you can just pull out the valve and sternum strap magnet assemble and pop it in this bladder.

Ok, Whats the secret to freezing water in the Platypus Bladder without freezing up the water flow in the quick-disconnect valve?
maybe place it in the freezer with the disconnect valve up. Then when you remove it, run the disconnect valve part under some warm/hot tap water to thaw out anything that might have frozen inside? Just a thought though. Haven't tried it.
From the Platy site: http://www.cascadedesigns.com/platypus/FAQ
How do I freeze my Platypus bottle or reservoir? Is it ok to freeze my Platy? bottle?
Lay it half-full on its side in freezer with all air purged. Do not over-fill. Water expands as it freezes and this can burst your reservoir or bottle.

Can anyone tell me the weight of the 3L...
Can anyone tell me the weight of the 3L bag only? Excluding the hose and the clip thingy at the top. Trying to save some grams from a gravity works setup and i think this would replace the dirty bag quite nicely asa it's a bit lighter. thx
It's going to be difficult to get an exact answer on this because most people don't have a scale that reads that low. I'm sure it doesn't weight more than an ounce or two. It is just a thin plastic bag so the weight will be negligible.
The bladder, weighs 165g (or 5.8oz) for a 3L, that's including the hose, so I would say about 145g-ish?
I just weighed my 3L bag on the food scale. I just used it, so it had a little bit of water in it, and it weighed in at 65g not including the hose or the blue slider.

can you use the insulator hose accessory with this?
Absolutely! The Platypus Insulator Tube was made to be used with the Big Zip SL Hydration Bladder. It will also work with the Platypus Hoser Hydration Bladder. It's easy to install and works well to insulate in weather above 20 degrees F.

You can use a repair kit made for a water bed or air mattress, but a better idea, if you can live without it for a week or two, is to take them up on their lifetime warranty. Cascade Designs warranty dept- 800-531-9531

Yep, the SlideLock closure makes a carry handle or clip point. It's visible in the picture of the bladder.

how do you dry this damed thing out?
This has a pretty good sized opening that you can prop open with a spoon or something of that sort or can maybe use a rag. I also do pretty good in getting them dry by hanging hydration packs upside down.
My favorite feature is the large zip lock opening. I can stuff it with snow while like a bottle but use it with the convenience of a bladder. For drying I can reach right down with a towel.
Take the cap off of a spray paint can, cut the end off the cap so that you have a cylinder open on both ends, then stick the cap into the bag's opening. This will hold the bag open better than any other method. Set it upside down for a bit so that most of the water drains, then clip it to something to hold it upright to dry the rest of the way.
