A traditional avalanche probe relies on tactile sense (your sense of touch) to detect a buried victim, but the Pieps iProbe One Probe can actually detect the signal of a victim's beacon and emit an alert based on proximity to the beacon—whoa. Built rugged and durable, just like a traditional probe, the iProbe stands up to the same abuse and has been proven just as reliable. iProbe will detect any brand of beacon, and beacons with iProbe support allow for a few additional features which could potentially reduce multiple-victim search time. Pack a little extra technology in your pack and seconds spent probing could turn into seconds spent digging.

  • A single AA battery-powered proximity detector gives you both audible and visual confirmations when you’ve located a transmitting beacon
  • iProbe uses both visual and auditory proximity cues during search
  • When the tip of the iProbe is within two meters of a beacon, the LED lights up and the probe emits a "peep, peep" sound, and within 50-centimeters, the intermittent peeps become a continuous "peeeeeeep"
  • Mark button allows you to temporarily turn off a transmitting beacon to go search for other beacons if victim has an iPROBE-supported beacon (such as the Pieps DSP or Freeride)
  • Hitting the "mark" button a second time or removing the probe from the area causes the iProbe-supported beacon to automatically switch back to transmit

Bottom Line: Faster pinpointing and quicker recovery means a better chance of survival.

This is a cool product that sounds pretty dorky until you actually use it. An electric probe? Isn't that something that should only be discussed amongst consenting adults? Not at all.

The hidden beauty of this product is that it allows the user to sweep a large diameter circle (about 5m depending on the length you choose) without moving. This comes into play when you are down to the fine search with a handheld beacon, so instead of sweeping your beacon around in your hand, you wave the wand/probe over the area and pick up an audible "peep." Then, once you have located the strongest signal, you can plunge the probe and it will also help you home in on the buried victim even faster.

The only thing keeping this from being a 5-star product is that the on/off switch is also the battery removal cover and it is very easy to dump the batteries instead of turning the probe on. Other than that, it is a great addition to a backcountry safety kit.
