Overall good

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

For the price, this has met my expectations. I just use it for various tasks around camp and even some house projects in dark areas. I don't or do any super technical things with it so the brightness has been fine so far. Three beam settings are nice for battery conservation. You don't always need the brightest.

bright enough

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

great all around headlamp, i use it for short runs, camping, and for walking out after long climbs mostly. easy to use and provides enough light to see ahead of you.
edit: this is not a headlamp for finding your way in the dark. if you are following a clear path, doing things around camp, this is perfect. I had to repel and hike out in the dark recently after a long climb, could not see anything farther than 10 ft. If I didnt have friends with me with brighter lights I would have easily stayed lost in the dark.

Great build. The light functions are very user friendly. Very bright.

Not as good as my old one

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I lost my older Tikka XP and I miss it. I bought this as a replacement and have not been very pleased. The red light is not very bright, can be quite hard to use for hiking in the dark. That is my main complaint, I like using the red light though. The old XP also had a sliding diffuser that was nice so you wouldn't blind people if you were sitting around camp.

I returned this product after trying it out and cannot recommend it. The light works great and I'm satisfied with the brightness.

Unfortunately the headband and mount do not work well. The tilting mechanism is waaaay too loose and can change position by itself if you make sudden movements. A problem for a product marketed for outdoor enthusiasts. I have a Tikka from a few years ago for comparison and it did not have this issue. Everything was solid on that model. I went to a store to play with some display units and they seem to demonstrate the same problem with looseness. It seems to be an endemic issue with Petzl's newer model.

A disappointment because I really liked all my other Petzl products. As is, this will work great in a car and in the house, but not so much outdoor activity. 2 start because I actually like the light itself, but the headband and mount seriously lets it down.

I just returned one for the exact same reason. This headlamp can basically only be worn pointing down because the bracket is too loose to keep it aimed forward. My old Tikka Plus has an internal mechanism that keeps it aimed which this does not. Light is much brighter but the mount kills it. Very disappointed.

Is it possible to remove the elastic band for this model?

Responded on

Yes, this headband is removable and washable.

Hope this helps.

Daily Cary

I have this in my car at all time. It has gotten me out of more than a few jams since I got it. I've owned nearly every version of the Tikka since they came out ~15 years ago and they keep getting better and better.

I also noticed the burn time seems to be very low compared to many other models, ie) from Blackdiamond. Is this the case?

If you're looking for a budget minded headlamp it is a great choice and yes the burn time is lacking a bit. I really suggest the Black Diamond Storm It's been a main stay of my pack for 5 years and just love it's brightness and waterproof. Using it from Rainier and other PNW climbs, rainy spring time in the Wasatch Mountains and cayoneering in Southern Utah. You can't go wrong with the Storm.
