The Petzl TacTikka Plus is a tactical version of the popular Tikka Plus Headlamp. It has all of the great features including 4 LEDs instead of 3, a push on/off button instead of a slider switch, a tiltable housing, and 3 brightness settings with strobe function. These features have been combined with a red lens that easily flips down over the LED's for night vision. It is also water-resistant for all-weather use. The 150-hour burn time and durability of the LED makes the TacTikka Plus reliable. It doesn't throw out huge candlepower (33ft or 10m), making it ideal for activities requiring close-up lighting like trail hiking, setting up camp, and reading. The TacTikka Plus runs on 3 AAA batteries (included), and at 2.5 ounces, weighs next to nothing in your pack.
Bottom Line: The TacTikka Plus gives you night vision.
Over many years, I have owned several Petzl, Prinstontech and Black Diamond lamps. This one has been my fav. I have had the Tactikka plus for 3 years now. It is basic; but, has everything you need for most general activities. Compact and takes up little space in a pack. Multiple settings for light output plus a strobe and red lens. Good battery life. Great basic lamp.
Has enough light for trail walking and dims down easily to save on battery power. The red lens cover flips up and down easily too to help with the night vision, you don't have to continually push a button trying to find the red night vision light. Weighs very little.... The Red Lens Cover(flipping up and down)takes alittle getting use to..
I had one of these headlamps for 3 years...it went on a 5 week trip to the rain forest in Costa Rica and two cross-country cycling trips, as well as many short camping trips and some night fishing in between. I loved it...until it misplaced me somewhere in the middle of nowhere Nevada towards the end of the second cross-country cycling trip. The first thing I did when I made it back into civilization was to get myself another one.
At the time I lost my original Tactikka Plus, it was just about ready for a battery swap out...and that's after 3 years of use...not too shabby. My favorite feature of this headlamp is the flip-down red lens, since it's great for protecting your night vision and bugs aren't as attracted to it as white light. Yeah, you can buy a cheaper Petzl headlamp and then get different colored lenses (red, green, etc), but this one's built in so you don't run the chance of losing any small parts. I also love the flash mode, which I've used in the rain while cycling in addition to my bike blinky lights...which brings me to another point and that's that this headlamp, while not waterproof, is DEFINITELY water resistant.
Honestly, can't get much better than this headlamp.

Yep, just fine. Generally though, NiMH batteries don't perform as well in cold weather, so keep that in mind if you'll be mountaineering or winter camping.
I've had this light for a few months now and taken it on several adventures. This light is lightweight, bright, reliable, comfortable, durable; the list goes on. Also, the adjustable brightness and red filter make for great multi-person situations, when you don't want to be blinding your buddies.
I'm a ski patroller and I got this headlamp to put in my pack so that I wasn't always digging my other headlamp out for use with other things. This has become my favorite all around light because the different setting and the ability to use all of the different levels with the red lens is great. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a great all around headlamp.
Can this headlamp use the CORE battery kit? It looks like it should, but I am not sure. Anyone know? I am trying to decide between this and the tikka xp 2.
Thanks for the help!! I will check out the XP2 then. I think that CORE battery kit is one of the smartest things I have seen in headlamps in quite a while.
I chose this headlamp from Petzl's lineup because of it's pedigree/price ratio, it's flip up red light filter, and it advertised water resistance. PROS: The 4 LED's give off a large amount of light. I've found the medium (in Petzl's words "optimum") setting works for most applications, and its nice to have the high ("maximum" in Petzl language) setting there if you need to step up your light output. The packaging boasts 120 hours at the optimum setting, 100 at the maximum. I trust these numbers, but haven't been timing. The real selling point for me was the red filter which flips up from underneath the LED's. I really value my natural vision at night, so I wanted a red light on my lamp, but I didn't want the extra LED built into the new Tikka2 and Zipka2 lamps. The filter is easy to use, feels solid (won't snap off), and does its job well. It stays out of my way when not in use and I can flip it up or down without taking the lamp off. The lamp body is free to slide around the headband, but doesn't do so easily. This is nice because the lamp can be moved without moving the elastic, but only if you want it to. CONS: These cons are more worries than criticisms. I am not sure what makes this lamp water resistant. I was expecting to see some sort of O-ring around the opening to the battery compartment, but I didn't notice anything special. Also, the hinge feels a little brittle. These aren't real cons yet, rather just details I am going to pay attention to as the lamp ages.
tl;dr Lots of light at medium setting, even more at high. Red filter is super cool for star gazers. Can't tell what makes it water resistant. Hinge is a slightly brittle, but no problems yet.
I absolutely loved this headlamp (right up until the time I realized someone snatched it out of my backpack). I got a Princeton Tech to replace it, but I definitely miss the red flip-down lens, the brightness, and the adjustability of the light. Its 100% worth the $44 investment...now I just have to go make some more money...

This thing lives in my Jeep and backpack, I have used it a ton and have yet to replace the batteries on it. LEDs are plenty bright for camping/hiking use and the red is nice at night. Solid light, a little expensive but well worth the money, very comfortable on the head.
Lots of my buddies have this. It's the red light capability that makes it work for us. Red light supposedly helps preserve your natural night vision. Great, light, comfortable, simple.
Catch the Lord of the Rings reference? Eh, I'm a nerd. That aside this light is truly amazing. Provides the perfect amount of light. Not too bright but provides an abundance of light. The red filter is wonderful for late night rummaging, while your pal is sleeping next to you, and not worrying about waking them up with the sun. The strap fits super comfy around the head and the tilt feature of the light works great. You can see at every angle. Overall this is the best headlamp I have ever owned and I already know that as soon as my current one wears out I am going to get another one. Great light Petzl!
When shopping for headlamps for the first time, I've noticed that sometimes there is a choice between "one size" and "size 0" and I was wondering whether someone could explain that to me.
Size 0 is one size for Petzl. If they're breaking it up into sizes for headgear of any kind, those sizes are 1 and 2. The Tactikka is adjustable as well.
I've had this headlamp for around two years now and it's done it job. The only bad thing about it is where the battery housing is, evertime I change the batteries it comes loose and the light flickers a bit. The red light filter is nice to have to keep your night vision and not blind others at night when you have to work on / do whatever at night.
The Princeton Tec version of this light (the Quad Tactical) has a nice thumb screw that prevents the battery cover from loosening and makes it snug enough for really solid water resistance. The Tactikka is a great lamp, but the Quad Tactical seems to have a little better case design in my opinion. And it's a little brighter at 45 lumens.
This headlamp is great! Ive had it for a year now and no problems so far! it is surprisingly bright! i guess i wasn't expecting it to be that bright when i bought it but holy cow! this thing lights up a good 25 yrds in front of you. haven't ad to change batteries yet which it great! i think it takes 3 triple A's which are included with the lamp. its a pretty standard lamp with High, medium, low and emergency flash. one of the little things that got me was the flip up red lens. always ready, always there, and it protects your night vision while reading in the dark.
Bought this for little bro, who is a budding bow-hunter/outdoor enthusiast, and he hasn't taken it off since he took it out of the plastic. They say 1,001 recommended uses, but I bet this 13 yr. old could double that figure! ** Excellent battery life ** Good durability ** Sufficiently bright for 100s of uses ** Comfortable fit ** Red lense for Night Vision!!
The size and weight are more than the black diamond ion I was used to carrying but more is relative whenyou are counting an ounce or two. The lighting is far superior to the ion and does not eat batteries as quickly. Also the availaility of aaa batteries is better than a poprietary lithium ion. What I really like about the light, and my reason fo buying it is the red filter. Using it with the red filter has NO impact on your night vision. Star gazing in Yellowstone within minutes of using the light last week I was glad I paid the extra for the little red piece of plastic that flips down over the lens. In reality the price difference for the standard model versus this means Petzl makes more money for adding the 30 cent piece of plastic but it IS worth it
A great light that I've been using since summer of '08. Fits well and is quite comfortable. Works great around camp and is right on the border of being useful for night hiking. Only negative I have is it's claim for being water-resistant. Although I haven't had the great fortune of using it in any type of rain, there is no type of weather seal around the battery opening and I have doubts of it's ability to keep moisture out effectively. Still recommending though for sure.
This is the best lamp on the market. It has 4 led's,has a red flip down which is good for night walking. it has 4 settings, bright dim economic and emergency flash. And at 2.5 oz, it is one of the lightest and brighest on the market. 5/5 for me.
The 3 brightness and 1 blinking modes are very useful. The red flip-up lens is handy when it's pitch-black and you don't want to get blinded by the super bright LEDs. This thing is light and comfy on the forehead and small enough to easily put in a pocket. Made in France, too! Better than the junky and heavy Made in China crud.
I know this is an old question and it's been answered already, but, because of this question, I decided to compare the light output of this lamp to the 4-5 other LED headlamps that I have. This one happens to be tied with one other for the coldest/blue-white type of light. I have used this head lamp extensively and I really like it. The coldness of the light has never really bothered me before, but most of my other head lamps are definitely a little warmer color than this one. The others that I compared it to were made by Princeton Tec, another Petzl, an Everready (big bug-eyed one), and a little tiny one that runs on 2016 watch batteries.
it's possible to get them in different color temperatures but the majority in use are definitely the colder blue, white. I wouldn't say it's as bad as fluorescent lights though.
My young Grandson in Iraq noted that Marines could use Headlamps. "Power goes out all the time and most people bump around in the dark. Headlamps are a great piece of gear. The ones with the flip down red lens are the best...PETZI..we can use them in he field too.." I ordered 12 from you and they are on their way to Iraq. If he likes them, I plan to purchase about 50 for his Platoon. I could use a break on the price. Interested in a plug?
Headlamp is light weight, and comfortable. Switch is small for gloved usage but it is working out okay for me. Case has popped open on the hindged side twice so far. The unit still works but light gets intermittent. Fully opening the case and reclosing it seems to resecure it. Would have given it 4 or 5 stars except for the case issue. The light has three output levels perfect around the camp and in the tent. A good camp light.
So as a wildlife biologist who does some work at night, I was excited to find a headlamp with a built in red filter - and this was the reason I chose this particular headlamp. But, there is a big problem with this light. The battery case pops open! With the slightest bump or jar and the batteries fall out. This is a serious problem when you are using this lamp out in the woods rather than just in your tent as a reading light. The solution is not very pretty and may fail over time - duck taping the latch closed. I hope Petzl fixes this flaw or includes the red filter on a larger and better lamp in the future.
yes I agree. We have two of these headlamps. Both pop open and the batteries fall out. They pop open at the worst time, leaving us to crawl around, feeling for the batteries. very disappointed. Otherwise, we like the red filter, and the light. We duct taped them too.
I'm looking for a headlamp that will give me a nice wide spread of light with an optional red mode. I don't need any real distance, I have a good Cree LED handheld torch for that, but I do need enough light to see to set up camp, etc. I know that the description says exactly that, but I'd like to hear it from folks who have used it. Thanks!
Thanks for the help on this. After spending a while reading the reviews on this and comparing them to the reviews on other headlamps I have come to the same conclusion. It seems to be perfect for my needs.
I would highly recommend this headlamp for you. I use this almost exclusively for everything I do from night climbing to setting up camp. I actually really enjoy this for setting up camp since I can adjust it to as much light as I need in both normal mode and red mode. You really could not go wrong with getting this.
i never feel the need to leave feed back but this head lamp is the best equipment I've ever invested in. I am a squad leader in the army and i suggest to my men to buy this product because it is the most useful thing I've ever bought. It is super compact and brighter than any of the competitors. I keep having to buy them because mine keep getting stolen or most recently ran over.
I bought this as a backup lamp in case my bigger 14 LED malfunctions in the middle of the night out in the middle of nowhere. But I often use it as my primary lamp since it has a red lens that wont mess up my night vision as much as a bright white LED will. Apart from that its a sturdy little, lightweight lamp that wont take up much room in your backpack or your pocket for that sake. More than enough light for walking round at night, but not powerful enough for running, mountain biking or other activities with a little more speed in it.
Very happy with this purchase. Used it on a river camping trip in Utah. The adjustable beam strength and red filter were worth the extra money. Camping partner did not get the red filter and he regretted it. This one is thumbs up all the way!!!
Great lightweight headlamp. Light output is good, the red filter is great for fishing, or not blinding others. Can withstand some rain and abuse, my Tactikka managed to break my fall one night (and almost my nose too). Didn't skip a beat.
If you are using a headlamp around others in close quarters (camping, below deck, etc.) this one is THE one. Other people I was with had trad. lamps with blazing white light and it was more than annoying- it was blinding and could, perhaps, make some situations dangerous. The ability and convenience of going "red" or "white" is huge. Pay the extra $5 for this- it is absolutely worth it.
The Petzl TacTikka and Tikka-Plus are a much improved version of the original Tikka headlamp. The four LED blubs are much brighter than the Tikka's 3 blub configuration. The angle adjustment is an added bonus and let's you direct the beam where you want it.
The TacTikka's handy flip down red lense cover will help to mantain your night vision.
If you need a bright lightweight headlamp this is the one for you.
After looking at a wide variety of headlamps, I was really glad to find the TacTikka Plus. Its attached red filter meant that I would be able to preserve my night vision without fumbling around with an assortment of separate filters. It's lightweight, comfortable to wear and adjusts to provide just the right amount of light whether I'm reading or handling camp chores.
Thank you for sending me this great product. My squadron mates and I work on the night shift here in Iraq and these headlamps help us to complete the assigned mission. Unlike other bulb type headlamps, the Petzl LED headlamps are much brighter and the battery life is much longer thus reducing the need to pack extra batteries. Plus, the red flip-up lens is great for preserving our night vision. Thanks again.
This is a solid headlamp that casts a strong, bright wash of light. I like to hike light / ultralight and chose this lamp over some of the UL ones that have a little zip string for a band, which I found to be ridiculous - this really does the job and isn't all that heavy. The case can be a bit finicky but overall its a good balance between weight size and output. Thumbs up.
I use this light around the house, and when we do indigent medical care, including ob and gyn. Works well in a pinch. Am retiring most of my incandescent lights although they still are needed for farther throw when it comes to distance viewing. Some of the staff at the office have seen mine in action and it has become the hot item to give. Enjoyed the excellent, prompt customer service as well. When the next model comes out that is twice or more brighter I will upgrade again.
Here's some info about this light: Maximum output: 35 lumens
At a given length of battery use (ie. 0 h is new batteries), the distance at which the light from the headlamp is brighter than a full moon on a clear night (0.25 lux is):
At the brightest setting: 0 h = 32 m 0.5 h = 25 m 10 h = 15 m 30 h = 5 m
At the middle setting: 0 h = 23 m 0.5 h = 20 m 10 h = 13 m 30 h = 6 m
At the dim setting: 0 h = 15 m 0.5 h = 14 m 10 h = 11 m 30 h = 9 m

This headlamp is awesome! I have been backpacking and outdoor adventure seeking over ten years and never found one light source other than this headlamp that works so well for what it does. Just a few weeks ago I took it down the Grand Canyon with me. Hiking the 12 mile Havasupai waterfall trail at night was a breeze with this headlamp. You can switch from three powers of light which conserves the batteries, which seem to last forever, and the red light lens option is great for around the tent or campsite. Super comfortable and light, would highly recommend to anyone.
The TacTikka Plus is a must have piece of gear if you ever leave the wire. Small and lightweight, you can wear it on your head or around your neck. It provides the right amount of light wherever you need it.
I think this is my 5th headlamp...yep, I'm a gearhead. I have to say it's my favorite one thus far. I just got back from a 4 day snowcamping trip where this lamp had it's maiden voyage and it did really well. It's super light, very easy to operate with only one button to push (even with gloves on). There's 3 settings to scroll through for brightness, and then the 4th is a strobe. The red filter lens is easy to click up or down. It was a new feature for me, and I really enjoyed it, as it was nice to use in our igloo as a soft background light, or in the snow kitchen while chatting with friends and making hot spiked apple cider. I think this will be the last headlamp I purchase for awhile, it's a keeper....
I've had my tactikka for three overseas deployments, and I use it during every training event. I love this headlamp and will continue to use it as long as I can. As far as weight, battery life, lumen output, and durability. This headlamp is no compromise. It holds strong in every category.
What is the manufacturers warranty for this headlamp? Is it lifetime guarantee like some of the Princeton's? Will they replace it free of charge if something is defective such as the battery casing problems? Thanks.
I have beat the crap outta this light, you wont break it. The only thing I would caution you about is to keep the red lens over the leds, I'm not sure if this is really necessary, but I do it anyway.
It's a 3-year, and they will replace it for free, but it doesn't really matter. If you buy from Backcountry and it breaks in 25 years, you'll still be able to return it.
I use this primarily for illuminating dark areas for performing technical equipment repairs both mechanical and electrical/networking. Having the ability to dim the light is a big plus for me. I'm ordering another one right now so I have one at home and one at the office.
I've just come inside from using the Petzl Tactikka Plus Headlamp for the third time this month to light the way while I used my snowblower to clear my 200+-foot driveway in the dark! Never intended this use when I purchased it after New Year's, but it's perfect for putting light where I need it, whether it's several yards ahead or straight down while I shift gears. I expect to use it for a host of outdoor activities such as hiking, geocaching or bicycling, but the snow clearing was an unexpected bonus. I have yet to use the colored lens for night vision -- I need the bright light for the snow job. I recommend it. Snowblower not included.
so I bought this for the trail and hunting, so far I have used this thing more at home than outdoors. Things like working on an electrical outlet in a dark room, looking for a cat at night outdoors, walking the dog at night. It is just a handy tool!! I cant wait to try it in the woods, but so far I have gotten my moneys worth!! A best buy item.
I have had my Tactikka since 2006. I am in the military and this thing has performed equally well in the cold mountains of Alaska to the blistering deserts of Iraq. The battery life is not exactly phenomenal, but I always take an extra set just in case. The red lens has served me well in situations ranging from nighttime sniper engagements to early morning walks to the deer stand. With the red lens up, the light output is definitely less, but works very well for tasks close at hand. However, with fresh batteries, the red light will still get out there to allow you to see when walking in the dark. Without the filter, the light is bright enough that I usually end up blinding my friends when shined on them. A lot of guys I know have cheaper Wal-mart headlamps and have gone through a lot of them, but this thing is beginning to make me think it is unbreakable with the amount of torture I have put it through.
Recently, my headband had lost its elasticity and I thought I would have to get another headlamp, but I called Petzl and they sent me a "gently-used" replacement band out the same day - for free! You can't beat that in today's economy.
Normal uses - nighttime military operations, camping and hiking, hunting, around the house when the power goes out.
Great all around headlamp. The redlight is a great feature unique to this model. I dont have any strong comparison points between this and another headlamp, but have not had any concerns with this lamp.
I have had this light for around 7 years and it's still a great light. I have used it hiking, around the house, working on cars, etc. It seems to have good battery life and good lighting for what I do. I usually just throw this in my pack and it hasn't broken yet so it's fairly rugged. It works well on my climbing helmet as well. I like the red lens too. The red helps me see at night and not blind and bother other people. When I use the lens it generally doesn't seem to bother my own vision, so to conserve batteries I usually switch it off if I enter a clearing. It seems to be a good price for a sturdy unit. So unless you need something else special, then this is a great purchase. If I lost mine I would buy this again to replace it. Another note is that for all these years every time I grabbed this light the batteries worked. I do change out batteries occasionally just because a lights without batteries aren't very useful. I have also used this in sub freezing temperatures.
This headlamp has just the right amount of brightness for bike rides to and from work. Not too heavy and good viewing angle. Only downside is that it consumes batteries!
Great headlamp for field and tactical situations. Used it in Ranger School and in Iraq. Dropped it off of a 50 ft rock face and it was still rockin'. Also used in the rain with no issues. Good battery life and convenient red lamp system. This and the Princeton Tec Tactical EOS are about the same.
This is another go to piece of kit for anybody spending any amount of time in the outdoors. We get issued these in the military and I have been using the same light for a couple of years. When it's really dark out, you don't need that much light to see, and the red lens helps keep your night vision. Worth every penny!!!
I've never experienced that problem with mine. The only thing I've noticed is if you push the top opening button while pulling down on the face, it can open. Just be careful not to do that.
I don't think this would be a great lamp to hike with, but for around camp it would be fine. I use it primarily for photography and geocaching. The red cover is great for both, as I generally only have the light on when I need to search through my bag. If you're looking to go night hiking in it, I would recommend a different lamp.
well when i first saw the specifications i was afraid it would be too dim. it was to be a back up light but it has turned into the primary source. its much brighter than i expected and i keep it in the lowest seting when in use. the size and weight are great i dont regret the purchase im very well pleased.
I bought this for use in tactical situations and personal use, it has been the best investment i've made in a light. It is a great light with multiple capabilities and holds up great. I would recommend it to anyone, especially my fellow soldiers.
Great lamp, I like the red flap although I worry it could break off (hasn't yet though). Downside is these are crazy expensive, the $10 Energizer ones are more nearly as good for 1/4 the price. I bought this because I had a coupon and they are better, just not $30 better.
I bough this light as I have seen several around the base here in Afghanistan. My mini-mag with filter attatchment was not working out for me. I was looking for a hands free light that worked on the light discipline rules required here. When I first installed the fresh batteries and turned it on I was totally satisfied. However, after about 3 weeks of nightly use, the batteries had died down to about half power and I could not see 5 feet with the red cap over the light. I put in fresh batteries and viola, perfect light again. Petzl also makes versions of this light with green and blue filters. If you are in need of a colored light, I suggest one of those. If you just need a white light for around the house or have tons of batteries to waste on a red light, then this is your light.
I bought this for my husband as a Christmas gift. Although it is only mid January, he has already found multiple uses for it. He is an avid fisherman and usually leaves the dock before daybreak (yes, even in the winter) It is very nice to have the light on those days it is cloudy and also very nice to be able to see if there is ice on the dock.
It has also proven very handy for replacing an overhead ballast in a light fixture in a dark hallway. I didn't have to stand there and try to hold the flashlight EXACTLY where he wants it. (That was worth the cost)
It has also been very helpful when doing some mechanical work on my son-in-law's Jeep .
We haven't had the product long enough to speak to its durability, but I have high hopes.
Does anyone know if the battery housing on the current tactikka plus still come off easily when bumped or pushing the on button? I've noticed a few people had complaints from 2006. Wondering if people that purchased in 2008 had the same problem. Thanks
The battery cover on the Princeton Tec Tactical Quad, very similar to the Petzl Tactikka Plus, that I purchased a year ago (summer 2010) has a machine screw holding it on. There is no way that it will pop open accidentally. The screw is still easy enough to turn since they have a narrow section of the buckle that looks like it is designed to fit perfectly in the screw slot. It's a very solid, water resistant, design that really doesn't require any tools to use. Well thought out in my opinion. Although both are good lights, I consider it to be an upgrade from the Tactikka.
Previously stated, the only thing I've noticed is if you push the top opening button while pulling down on the face, it can open. Just be careful not to do that, but never have I experienced your concern with my headlamp.
I use this light for stable chores during the winter when it starts getting dark way too early (unfortunately no lights away from the main barn where my two are kept and it's close to pitch inside the sheds). I can clean stalls even on the lowest setting and the red filter is great for not blinding the horses when I halter them. I actually lost my first one and had to immediately buy a second, because I couldn't get anything done without it.
I use the lamp for military training. I love how it is strong, light and long lasting. The only improve on it would be a darker lens. I feel like it is more of a pink than a true red. I am by far the brightest light (even when on the lowest setting). Other than that, it is very easy to use with gloves and has been one of my best investments lately.
Great light for night hiking. Red light feature is great for suprising animals in the dark. Really the most suprised is you! Go out, and buy one, and have some night time fun!!!
I've been using it for about three years. It's been with me on over 200+ days of army duty, every hiking and off-road trips including technical work in all of those settings - and has performed flawlessly.
3 modes of light+ flasher, and with the added red tinted lens cover you basically get 8 modes in one. Red light and the lamp's camo color are very useful for army and covert work when a low signature light is needed both for your own night sight and due to outside attention.
We use these regularly at home - working on the car at night, under the house, emergencies, power outages; and traveling everywhere, especially in parts of the world where the power goes out regularly leaving you in a strange place in total darkness for an indeterminate time, and on the trail. Completely indispensable. A MUST HAVE ITEM.
Great light, very wide field even with the red filter, and great distance with the white light on high. Lightweight and water resistant, this is a quality tool.
A wonderful head lamp system that is light weight and dependable. I really like the red filter option and the battery life is very good. I highly recommend this piece of equipment.
The perfect headlamp for backpacking, which was why I bought it in the first place. Quite bright for its weight, and love the different light settings so I can conserve battery when I can afford to. Use it around the house too.
This is a great product! Very lightweight and being able to angle it helps a lot. Also being able to change how bright the light is makes it nice so it doesn't totally kill your nightvision.
The best possible solution for enjoying all the extra stars you can see once you finally get to the backcountry. Flipping a lense to get to a red filter is the best!!!! Small AAA batts, long-life LEDs...what more could you ask?
I use my Petzl Tactikka Plus in the cockpit since I do a great many hours of flying at night. The Tactikka is great because it frees up your hands and the red filter is essential for night flying to retain your night vision. The battery life with this light is phenomenal and it's quite comfortable to wear even while having an aviation headset on your head as well. I'm sure this isn't what the Tactikka was made for and I'm not the audience they market it to but this is a great tool for any pilot's flightbag.
This was a Christmas gift for my husband. He'd wanted an LED headlamp to replace the old-fashioned one he'd had for years. Since we sail, and looking at charts at night requires a red light to preserve night vision, I chose the tac version. Well, we haven't taken it sailing yet, but did take it along to a Texas ranch for vacation with the kids. My husband loved the lamp, and so did the girls (4, 2, and 2). They fought over who would wear it for our night-time excursions! So we were really glad for the adjustable power/brightness...
I'm convinced that head lamps are one of the best, most useful tools to have. Whether in the car, camping or exploring the wonders of the world. This is an item you're going to want to have with you. It's clean and efficiently designed and build to last.
This item is a must-have! I have gone camping twice since purchasing it, and have been amazed at its versatility both times. The flip down lens is an ingenious idea! I can switch from white to red light almost instantly. You may be concerned about the Headband not fitting, but at 7-5/8", I have a rather large noggin and it fits just fine. I am going backpacking next month and doubt Ill survive without my TacTikka Plus!
I bought this headlamp because my old headlamp busted (not a Petzl). I saw what a good deal this site had on this headlamp and after reading such good reviews, I purchased it. I am 100% satisfied. Very comfortable, pretty lightweight, bright, and I love the brightness settings and the night vision option. This is a great headlamp!
As a former caver and shepherd (you try pulling a lamb at 3:30am in the sleet while holding a regular flashlight) and current SAR team member, I have lots of experience with head-mounted flashlights. This is unquestionably the most comfortable and convenient.
Great little light. I work shows, onstage and offstage. I like the red filter. Mainly for backstage daily activities and hands free rigging work. I am able to use both hands while hanging with my harness. Reliable, not super bright, but bright enough to see in the dark. Comfortable head band, so you can use it for long periods of time. Long battery life too. I'd recommend it to any technician in the industry that needs a hands free light. However if you need a super bright light like a surefire or a scorpion, look for a xenon headlamp instead of LEDs.
Currently using this headlamp in Afghanistan. Cant beat it, its the best headlamp I have ever used. I cut the straps and stuck it onto my gear. The white light is super bright, red is perfect for night operations, dimmer is a plus (dont want to blind someone). Still burning strong and not a single problem.
I bought the Petzl TacTikka to replace my Tikka which was stolen during a home burglary :( I am pleased to say that as good as my regular Tikka was, the TacTikka is that much better - the red filter is great for all those middle of the night things I need to dowhen you don't want to blind yourself with the bedside lamp. The headlamp overall is the best I've ever owned, bright enough, compact, durable, easy to use. You don't need to get one of those super bright head lamp cannons, just the TacTikka.
Great light, integrated filter easy to use. Great design and good modes. The strap even has a catch so it won't unthread to the on/off button which is rubberized. Everything has been thought through. Really a nice piece of gear.
I gave this to my husband because he does night demos of equipment for work and can wear this during set up. However, it is equally cool for other stuff. He uses it as a book light for bedtime reading. I cut his hair in the backyard (clippings can fall to the ground) and have used this for a nighttime haircut. It is comfortable and the light is very white and clear. I love it too.
I bought this headlamp for my husband, who is a dj and performs at many clubs. He loves to use the headlamp when he is spinning records, the light is so bright and true yet just a little amount as not to upset any of the other people at the club. He really likes the red cover that he can flip down for night vision, and what better place for the strobe setting than in a club? It is just perfect. I also bought one for my mother in law who is an avid crocheter, and finds it difficult to do her projects at night, she usually leans her living room lamp really close but of course nobody likes the smell of singed hair. This works perfect for her, the light is really bright and is such a true white that it makes it easy to tell colors apart. Love it ! Will definitely buy more.
Over many years, I have owned several Petzl, Prinstontech and Black Diamond lamps. This one has been my fav. I have had the Tactikka plus for 3 years now. more...
Has enough light for trail walking and dims down easily to save on battery power. The red lens cover flips up and down easily too to help with the night more...
