The Petzl Spirit Carabiner is especially lightweight and easy to clip on and off any anchor point thanks to the ergonomic shape and snag free Keylock system gate. This eliminates the hook found on traditional carabiner gates and makes clips a smooth experience. At just 49 grams for the straight or bent gate version, combine Spirit Carabiners with Express slings for lightweight quickdraws.
This has been the loveliest functioning carabiner on the market for over 10 years. The keylock system rocks...no snagging on anything. No other company that has a keylock carabiner does it better than the original Spirit. One drawback is their weight (hence the missing star above). They are heavy compared to many of the newer (especially wire gates) carabiners on the market, so if weight is a concern (for your alpine rack or a hard route that you are trying to free), I recommend some of the light wire gates (check out Trango's, DMM's or Mammuts). If you want the Cadillac of carabiners and don't mind a little extra weight along with your amazing handling, this is the one.
Easily my favourite biner. Smooth action, never snags no matter how hard you try. Weight might be the only thing that bothers some. But these are so good I use them daily!

There are pictures of the difference if you check the page for the complete quickdraw. Just type Petzl Spirit into the search. These are the same thing but without the dogbone.
i got several of the bright and the anondized, but for the life of me can't remember which color is which. but i do think that the bright is aluminum with an ORANGE gate, and that the anonidized is blue-ish gray w/ an orange gate.....or it could be the other way around...hahaha...these are the bentgate biners that i'm talking about too.
Anodized is a color set. Anodized strait gate is Orange with a gray gate, where Anodized bent gate is Gray with an orange gate. Aside from my very direct conversation with the backcountry staff, I have also checked other web sites such as, http://www.trails.com/gear/outdoor-gear/carabiners/ and found it to be the same story. Backcountry is creating confusion with the fact that they have no pictures of the Bright color set, found here in the Petzl Spirit Express Quickdraw http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Petzl-Spirit-Express-Quickdraw/PTZ0065M.html, which is the raw aluminum color. Bright straight gate is aluminum with a blueish gray gate and bright bent gate is aluminum with an orange gate.
I bought this and a BD biner at the same time to see which I liked better. This one wins it hands down. Clean crisp gate action with just the right amount of tension. Bent gate makes clipping a piece of cake. Buy it.
I have to say having the ability to choose one color for rope side, one color for bold side, bent gate, strait gate... It all makes picking a carabiner all to easy! This is the only biner for me!
This biner and the dmm shadow are the best solid gate biners you can buy. The keylock nose and the strong open gate strength make them the best. I recomend these for general rock climbing where wieght is not a concern. Unless your doing hard alpine climbing than the spirit mixed with some other light weight wire gates is the best option for 90% of climbers out there.
I've been using these since the mid-1990's, and of course used many other carabiners, normally due to price. But, after lots of use, they really stand out as a well made and well designed carabiner. I'm glad to see so many other keylocks on the market, but this one always seems to work better - handles well, doesn't snag. Even better, the gate continues to work smoothly after serious abuse. No worrying about a gate that won't snap closed at a critical moment with this biner.
I love these for sport climbing. they are light and handle relly nice. For some reason they fit my hand well and are super smooth to opperate. the key lock feature is nice, it dosent snag on bolt hangers and clothing like the standard notched biners to. For a solid gate biner they are light in weight as well. I rack these on every route.
i think the petzl sprint carabiner is, without a doubt, the best carabiner on the market. they look like a quality piece of equipment, which allows me to climb above with confidence. i like the gate action, not too tight and not too soft, just right. i like the feel, really good balance. i'm not as crazy about the price but, what the hell, climbing is my passion. john
I've used this biner for years and it's held up like a champion. After 5 years, it still works like it's supposed to and it clicks closed as strong as it did the first day I bought it. I think this is one of the best all around quickdraw biners out there. There are lighter options but if you're doing a short sport route and just need a reliable biner, take about a bakers dozen with ya.
Try this...put out several similar biners (including the Spirit) in front of you. Now, pick each one up one at a time and just get the feel of it. If you're anything like me, the Petzl Spirit will just feel ultra-natural and comfortable. The grippy ridges where your forefinger opens the gate are super-smooth. The gate opens smoothly and evenly, and it's really light. If you want the Cadillac of biners without the weight, pick up a few of these.
Very slick action, and the ridges on the gate of the straight version actually help with the grip! The 'biner is noticeably heavier than most others, though...
Super Light Weight and the door catch is very Tight, would work fine as a primary I use as a lightweight secure backup. Would make it a 5 star but prefer locking biners for 5's
The Petzl Spirit is one of my favorite biners, and the best non-wire gate biner I've used. It has really smooth action, and a keylock gate. The keylock gate is good for racking stoppers, since the wire won't caught on the gate when selecting a nut. The spirit is a mid-sized biner, with a good sized gate opening and is fairly light weight.
Of all the solid gate biners that are the same price, these are quite possibly the most well-thought out. However, they are on the heavy side nowadays, with several full-size wiregate alternatives weighing a good thirty percent less. If you must have solid gates, go ahead, they're great in that respect, but there are many other wiregates that do the same thing for less weight.
This carabiner sure has some spirit. There is a reason why all those hard sport climbs you see in the magazines are equipped with Petzl spirit quickdraws. These clean nose carabiners clip like a dream. They also have a huge rope bearing surface, so you dont beat your rope up while working a route. My only beef with these is there are really only good as sport biners, there are too many lightweight choices out there when it comes to a biner to use on your rack.
The Petzl Spirit is, in my opinion, the slickest biner out there. Keyless gate and very smooth clipping action make unclipping from your harness or gear as hassle-free as possibleno hang-ups! The anodized finish lets you easily distinguish your gear from your partner's gear, plus, the color pattern on the straight gate biners is the opposite of the bent gate biners, making it that much faster for you to decide which one to grab. A+ for Petzl.
The Petzl Spirit is the best biner on the market and should be on everyone's rack. The keylock close system prevents snags while you're trying to set that vital piece of protection. Super smooth action when clipping your rope in.
Not much I can say that hasn't been repeated about 5 times already in the other reviews. SOLID biner. SMOOTH action. SICK anodizing. I am always willing to pay a few extra dollars for the high quality Petzl products because its worth the peace of mind that the stuff is just quality.
I use these biners and 8mm runners for my slings, and they work really well. The keylock system is great - it's a real pain when non-keylock biners snag on the chains b/c you're going at it one-handed (your other hand is breaking on your rap device). Plus they do look rad.
I use this biner to clip on anything heavy and to tie up loads that I wouldnt trust regular hooks with. This is a great carabiner and even though you shouldnt use it for climbing i have secured things they weigh more than 150lbs in the air it had no problem
Matt, these are rated to over 5000lbs and are widely considered to be one of the most well made carabiners of all time. Why wouldn't you climb with them?
This has been the loveliest functioning carabiner on the market for over 10 years. The keylock system rocks...no snagging on anything. No other company more...
Easily my favourite biner. Smooth action, never snags no matter how hard you try. Weight might be the only thing that bothers some. But these are so good more...
