Using the NAO for a midnight jaunt to Sykes Hot Springs in Big Sur, CA.

Not The Gimmick You Think it Is

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was hesitant about this lamp when I went to order it. The technology seemed a bit "too much" for a head lamp. Plus the idea of my light adjusting itself gave way to images of faulty mechanisms and my light dimming at important moments.

BUT I WAS WRONG. This light has been my source of illumination for almost 9 months now and has done over 200 miles of backpacking from the arid regions of Joshua Tree, to the bushwhacking conditions of Big Sur, and further north into red woods of nor cal and Oregon. To be completely honest it's stood up better than most lamps I've owned .
I don't know how I lived without the NAO technology. The streamlined simplicity of not having to adjust knobs and buttons, makes transitioning from spotlighting the trail ahead to the dim flood for a map check, second nature.
The idea of programable settings for different activities is a bit gimmicky. I find creating your own is better than usign their default settings.
As far as battery life, they left no stone unturned when designing the battery. Updated Lithium Ion provides hours of intense light with out sacrificing weight. Also if the LI battery goes out, simply pop it out and substitute double a's as the pack supports both.

Cool light

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share

The science behind this light is epic! Everyone has those times when they are walking at night and have to look at the map and get blinded . This headlamp eliminates that! Auto dimming in an instant. So rad in so many ways. Worth the cash if you rock a headlamp often

Great ligth, but works poorly in winter

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

So, this light adjusts to meet your lighting needs, saving battery life and your eyes, but when the light reflects off of your cold winter breath the reactive lighting adjusts quickly going bright and dim and creates a feeling of disorientation while on the trail. The beauty is that you can always turn it off.

This light feels good on my head, very secure, and is as bright is I could ever want it to be.

Like running in daylight

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is the best headlamp in terms of lighting. I used it during a running race and the battery lasted the entire night. Works decently on lithium aaas too. I'm really impressed with the brightness & how well it works in fog/rain/snow. The reactive technology is cool but I'm not sure if I notice it after a while. Which is maybe the point. For techies, the customization options are fun.On the con side it is heavier than other lamps but the weight doesn't bother me. It stays put really well. It is pricey but being able to see well in the dark is....priceless.

How is this with water? It doesn't really...

How is this with water? It doesn't really say much, and being water proof or at the least water resistant is a big deal to me

Best Answer Responded on

According to the Petzl website, it's water resistant to -30cm. With that, you should be able to take it snorkeling if you really wanted to.

The NAO has an IP X4 rating which in simple terms is conditions such as rain.

Reactive Lighting

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This headlamp is amazing. I love being able to program my lamp with different settings and also being able to use regular batteries as a back up. I plan on picking up the belt kit because the battery does start to bother my head after a little while. The reactive lighting works well and is a cool idea.

Nao Headlamp

Pretty close to the game changer petzl makes it out to be. I love the option to go to AA batteries if the rechargeable gets drained - valuable feature for multi-day trips that too many electronics are missing. The light is BRIGHT and has served well for running and skiing. Decent for biking in the city but haven't tried it on trails yet. Fits well on standard climbing helmets even with think clips (like petzl) and the optional head strap is unnecessary as it fits well on my head. It is definitely on the heavy side but is balanced well. Worth it.

THE headlamp

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Gary pretty much said it all. But here are my thoughts. This thing works! At first I thought the strap system might be awkward to put on and off or won't stay on well. Not the case at all! It's stable, you can slap it on fast, and it feels well-balanced even when running (my main activities so far). The top strap isn't even needed, but I could see how it might be useful. Because the battery is on the back of your cranium, it balances out the headlamp nicely and you don't notice the weight that much. Watch all of the Petzl videos and you just might be convinced--I was.

Pros: Lighting profiles, brightness, auto adjusting beam(s), strap system works awesome, balanced feel, solid construction
Cons: Weight!, price

In a league of its own!

This headlamp is truly amazing, it is definitely in a league of it's own. The headlamp has the ability to store four lighting profiles which can be loaded onto the headlamp with the Petzl OS software download. This gives you the option of having tailored lighting for an outing. The pre-configured profiles include Mountaineering, around-the-home, Bivouac, Multi-activities, Orienteering race, Trekking / Hiking, Caving and Trail Running. Each of those profiles can also be modified or you can configure your own profile from scratch. The profiles can be cycled through by using the multifunction switch.

This headlamp is extremely bright, keep that in mind when using it, my buddy found out the hard way lol. The headlamps housing can be tilted downward which in turn is useful in extending the battery life.

This headlamp can also be powered with alkaline or lithium AAA batteries. In my use with lithium cells I have found that you can still maintain use of the reative lighting profiles.

The headlamps Zephyr headband is also incredible. It can be worn on a helmet, baseball cap, beanie or as normal and stays put. The addition of the included to strap would be a benefit to those who would use it for trail running where any other headlamp would need to be re-adjusted.

All in all I cant say enough good things about this headlamp. I got it for well below $175 but if I had paid full price Id still consider every penny money well spent.
