Dial in your lighting.
Instead of rigging up a complicated system of helmet mirrors to light the trail, just stick the Petzl MYP RXP Headlamp on your dome. With ll different lighting modes ranging from a modest 20 lumens all the way to a staggering 370 (in boost mode), it has the ability to provide the right amount of light for hiking, trail running, or hanging out around camp, and it can burn for up to 50 hours before the batteries need replacing. The MYO ships with 3 AA alkaline batteries, but it is also compatible with lithium, Ni-MH, and Ni-Cd cells, so you can opt for rechargeable options if you prefer (they also provide a longer burn time than the included batteries). Before the juice runs out, the MYO warns you when the batteries are 70% and 90% discharged, too, so you'll always know how much time you have left.
In addition to the multiple brightness modes, the MYO also lets you choose between Constant and Standard lighting. In Constant lighting, the brightness does not gradually decrease as the batteries drain; it then switches to reserve mode, which broadcasts three lumens for 50 hours, when the batteries near the end of their lives. Standard mode dims as the batteries die, but gives you a longer lifespan if serious brightness isn't as essential. The MYO also comes with an optional top strap for extra stability, and uses a water-resistant construction that lets you hike or run in the rain without zapping yourself.

- Q & A
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
I returned this before I used it because it arrived with a damaged headband strap fitting -- which prevented the top strap from attaching. Other than the quality control issue on the little plastic clip the lighting was superb and the headlamp felt light. I think I will be repurchasing this in the future, once my old black diamond storm finally kicks the bucket. I liked the 3 customizable modes and the diffuser. My initial impressions of the headlamp were very good--I would call this light industry leading in its class.
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
This headlamp is bright! I wear a baseball cap and have no need to wear my hat backwards with this headlamp due to the vertical adjustability. I use the lowest light setting for doing my nightly feeding chores, and the brightest setting is good enough to spotlight varmints. This headlamp goes with me everywhere
Great headlamp for running/XC skiing
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I have been using this headlamp for night time running and XC skiing and it works great. It has an additional strap that goes over the top of your head (not shown in picture) to help keep the headlamp in place. The additional strap is manually added by using a plastic loop that i ended up breaking when putting it together but easily found an alternative (small key chain ring) to make it work..
Quality lighting with durability issues
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
My headlamp failed after roughly 2.5 years of use (used fairly frequently, carried in pack extremely frequently) and when I sent it back to petzl, I was told there was a fault in the wiring and since it had been more the 3 years since the date of manufacture they could not replace it.
I debated giving it 2 or 3 stars as it did function well (bright, dealt well with cold, long battery life) but I believe that a headlamp built for outdoor use should last longer than mine did.
Great for Trail Running
I have been using this for trail running for a month now and I absolutely love it. Having 2 different options for beam pattern is useful when needing to look into the distance and the light filter provides an incredibly wide beam and allows me to run with the same speed and confidence I would in the day light.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars was the need to use the overhead strap because of the weight of the 3 batteries.
