Who wants a heavy helmet?

Petzl removed every bit of unnecessary material from the Meteor III + Climbing Helmet to keep it as light as possible. Part of that minimalism involved adding a whole bunch of ventilation so this helmet breathes nearly as well as if you were wearing nothing at all and gives you no excuse to leave it behind on any rock climb.

  • Ultralight design for those who want to carry around as little gear as possible
  • Excellent ventilation for warm-weather climbing
  • Headlamp clips for nighttime climbing
  • Ratchet-back adjustment system
  • Retractable adjustment system makes it easy to store the helmet in your pack
  • Remove and wash the interior foam when needed
  • The Meteor III was originally designed for climbing and mountaineering, but it also meets European standards for cycling and whitewater sports
  • Compatible with Vizion face shield (sold separately)

Meteor 3+ is a bomber helmet!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have owned this helmet for about 6 months now and I am super pleased with it! SO lightweight, great fit to the head, easily adjustable, comfortable, and quality made. I bought the Petzl Elios from another online outfitter, I didn't like the new color at all and it was the wrong size, so I returned it. I researched for some time and finally purchased this from while it was on sale. I really dig this lid. The large air holes and whitish color make for a very cool head even in mid-summer. I use this for all styles of climbing and I highly recommend it.

The Petzl site claims the Meteor has two sizes 1 & 2. Backcountry seems to be selling this as one size fits all. Which size is being sold?

We are very sorry for any confusion. The Meteor helmet does have a sizing option #1 and #2, but the sizing on the Meteor III + will be adjustable and fits all head circumferences between 53 - 61cm (20.8 - 24 in.). My goto for all things climbing

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Ideally, I'd have a hard shell and a foam shell but I'm rolling with one helmet. And this is it. It's a great helmet for climbing rock and ice. I am confident anytime ice is falling that this will protect my melon.
It fits well, with good micro adjustments in the back. The optional soft liner pieces allow for a customizable fit that accomodates any weird shaped head.
The helmet is lightweight and breaths really well with all the vents. In winter, wear a skull cap underneath for warmth.
I've had two of these and taken some shots to the skull from banging my head and from falling ice. So far, no injuries! Better than what can be said for my hands, knees and elbows!

Super Helmet

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is the best helmet I've owned. They never seem to fit me right, and are pretty uncomfortable- ( I've owned Black Diamonds in the past). I agree with the other reviewers- very light weight, comfortable, and easily adjusted. The last time I was out, I banged my head on the rock 2 different times, but felt nothing. I didn't notice a scratch on the helmet either. Buy this- you won't regret it. I bought this on the recommendation of a friend who owns one.

This helmet set a standard..

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

which every one has tried with different degrees of success to immulate. Petzl has since added a full on foam helmet but hte Meteor is still a top tier helmet by any measure. The Camp is a good comparison. Meteor fits my 7.5 head well and it is light. Down side? It is fragile getting ot and back fro mthe crag/mtn/ice. You need to take care of them to keep the helmet in tact. Worth the effort imo to get the level of protection offered. 4 out of 5 only because of the lack of durability.

How can I find the plastic ratchet piece...

How can I find the plastic ratchet piece that goes between the two adjustment parts. Mine snapped while ice climbing

Hey Ed,

You are probably going to want to hit up Petzl's Warranty department on that one. We don't carry individual components to full products but you could bet top dollar the manufactures do and would likely be able to send you a new one if the damaged piece falls under their warranty policy.

Helmets are essential for climbing, falling rocks, falling people all sorts of reasons to wear one.

In this case we were topping out of a ten pitch route that had lost of loose rocks

Essential gear

When I was young and climbing in the 90's I would never have worn a helmet sport climbing, it was not cool nor functional. Now twenty years later I probably will never climb anything without a helmet. Perhaps its age and wisdom..

But falling at any point and getting the rope behind your leg and flipping upside down can easily ruin your happiness. So I wear this all the time now, well not around town but all the time climbing.

Its light, functional and may not last for ever but since it is protecting my most important asset than I don't mind getting a new one every few years to ensure that I have the best protection for my nogging.
