When you're ice-climbing, the less time you spend fiddling with gear, the more likely you are to make it safely to the top. While that's a bit of a simplification, it mostly holds true and is the inspiration behind the new Laser Speed Light Ice Screws from Petzl. These screws are made starting with an incredibly light anodized aluminum tube, which is tipped by a steel drill to facilitate ease of screwing into the ice. The integrated crank handles are color-coded by the size of the screw, much the same as you see with cams for trad climbing. Petzl used a slightly smaller hanger to make it easier to screw these into sculpted ice, or basically any time you're not screwing into a flat wall of ice.

Very good with room for improvement

After using them for three seasons I am back to write this review. The aluminum shaft saves weight significantly. But it is a bit "sticky" to place and remove as compared with the steel screw, but that is due to the hydrophilicity of the native surface aluminum oxide layer. I just wish Petzl can make the steel head a bit longer so it take multiple sharpening. Every time when you sharpen a screw, you take a bit of the materials off. If you sharpen the screw professionally using a CNC machine, you may shave 0.5 to 1 mm. With the current design of the short steel nose, you can sharpen only a few times. The BD design is better on that aspcet, as they have a longer steel nose.
