Description

Get on the glacier with the Petzl Irvis FL Walking Crampons.

Petzl designed the Irvis FL Walking Crampons to give you excellent traction for basic glacier travel while limiting the number of points to keep you pants safer from crampon attacks. These 10-point crampons get the job done on any terrain where your only other aid is an ice axe. The Irvis FL Walking Crampon's full-strap Flexlock binding system attaches to any boots. You could even strap these Petzl crampons to your running shoes in a pinch. They also include anti-snow plates to prevent annoying and dangerous snowballing in wet-snow conditions.
  • Full-strap design works with any boots
  • Horizontal front points provide extra security in steep snow
  • Anti-balling plates included

They probably should get 5 stars... They have been great on up to 60 degree slopes.

Good spikes.

I have Scarpa T2X Tele boots. Will these fit on those boots? I'm particularly concerned about the tongue on the Tele boot causing problems.

They will as long as the boot isn't too big, probably 28+. They won't fit perfectly, because of the tongue, but i have seen it done. Good luck.

Should be no problem. That is about a mondopoint size 26-28. Should fit pretty much any boot as i have fit a mondo 29 (BD Method) with these.

Do these really fit size 12 boots? I see a lot of conflicting reviews over the net, with some people saying they fit size 13's and some saying they wouldn't fit size 11's...

Depends on the boot. While some boots may be the same size for a foot, the sole length and amount of external material varies. You can also order and extended center bar for really big feet!

They will fit an 11.5 US Scarpa Inverno plastic mountaineering boot, but WILL NOT fit the same boot in US size 12.5. Would need the extender bar.

ben,
which boot do you have? If it is a Salomon Nytro, Keen Summit County, or Garmont Momentum Snow, or of some similar construction, the Irvis flexlock should work for you. If it is a really large neg 100 boot, then I'm worried it will be too thick.

I the Petzl Irvis crampons for the first time for glacier travel along the summit to Gannett Peak in the Wind River Range, WY. They slipped off once, but after taking extra care to tighten them, they did not slip off again. They worked as advertised.

I'm looking for cheap, beginner crampons for ice climbing..Would these work, or are they only for walking?

You could use these for ice climbing, but they wouldn't be very good. Kind of like you could use a spoon as a shovel. When you're learning how to ice climb, it's nice to have good equipment. Very quickly you'd wish that you had something more taylor made for ice climbing. Spend the extra $50 and get something with vertical front points. I particularly like the Black Diamond cyborg, but Petzl has a couple of good models as well.

Totally Agree! I initially tried ice climbing (vertical ice) using a pair of general mountaineering crampons, and while they worked, they didn't / don't work as well as a crampon with vertical frontpoints.

Do they come with easy instructions on how to put them on? These will be my first crampons to own. I have never had any luck putting on ones I borrowed. Couldn't figure out the straps!

They are picture instructions. You can probably preview them at Petzl.com. Might also want to look at taking a course in their proper use!

These have a pretty modern design for the straps too.
I've had some older crampons with a less intuitive system and after 8 months of not using them it would take me a second to figure it out in the dark in the tent.
These pretty much just stay together and you pull one strap and you're done!

No - you'll need to get the extender bars.

It depends on the type and size of boot. It the boot your using is a low volume leather hiking boot - such as the Asolo FSN 95 in size 13, it will fit. It is a larger volume or double boot, you may need the extender bars. What I have found wearing a size 13, and have 4 pairs of crampons all if which directed me that I will need extender bars - is that if your using modern low volume leather boots - I also have size 47 La Sportiva Nepal Extremes - the direction of needing extender bars is not always spot on. I have not needed extender bars yet - crampons fit all boots no problem. However, use a higher volume boot or double boot - and I can see where the extender bars would be needed.

"Ultimate non-skid" as per a comment from a passer by at the trail head of our 12 mile trek. They worked perfectly for the conditions we were in (iced over snow) at San Jacinto Mtn C.A.. My girlfriend wore these and did not slip once but did tear a hole in her pants. They fit her great, were not too tight, and were very easy to take on and off. Would definitely buy a second pair as long as these ones last a respectable period of time.

If you need crampons for basic winter hiking these are fine and cheap. They are easy to adjust, will fit any boot (including flexible boots like my 3-season Montrails) and are fast and easy to put on. The front and back rubber bracing wraps nicely around the boot without causing any pressure points, uncomfortable rubbing or blood flow interruption (hence no cold feet). I wore them for prolonged periods both uphill and downhill and had no trouble at all. Bottom line: great value for basic winter walking / glacier crossing / etc...
