I've had this headlamp forever, back when it just came out and didn't even have the upgrade LED's, but I upgraded to the five when they did come out. My issue is this: The elastic bands are so worked and stretched that I can't even tighten it to my dome enough for hard use, just light hiking or else it flies off. If I send it to Petzl, will they charge me a grip to replace the webbing? And shipping is always an issue, as well. If so, I'll probably just bite the bullet and buy a new one. Just curious, never dealt with Petzl's custy service......

Or just grab some one inch flat webbing and a triglide and make a simple headlamp strap for $2.00.

Petzl sells replacement elastic kits for most of their lights. I don't know whether backcountry.com has them, but I by mine at karstsports.com for around $11.

Half good, Half bad

After owning a Petzl (alongside many others such as black diamond) for years without a problem, I decided to make another investment in a nice headlamp. The Duo is good in the fact that the LED's are extremely bright and cover a nice big area close up, the fact that it's waterproof, it's comfortable even with 4 AA's, and it's a Petzl, so you know it's good. The bad part is that the Halogen bulb was the reason for the purchase, and it's not nearly as bright as it's claimed to be, unless you run lithium batteries($$$). Also, its focus leaves much to be desired in regards to pinpointing at a distance and even, well-spread lighting close up. Not nearly as impressed with this halogen as I was with my MYO5, which is basically a spotlight/floodlight for your head. If you can find a myo5, buy it instead.... has the led's as well as the halogen, it's cheaper, brighter, and weighs half what this one does.

Have had mine for some time, never have had to change the bulb. I have no paperwork and can't get mine to open. How do you change the bulb?

Looks like you twist the front, pop the lens out, change the bulb, and then put it back together in reverse.
Here's the paperwork: http://www.petzl.com/files/all/technical-notice/headlamps/E69P%20DUOLED5%20E69500-L%20.pdf
I'm sure it'll make more sense to you than me, since you're familiar with the light.

According to Petzl's Technical Notice for this lamp, it produces 40 lumens from the LED array. For some reason, they do not provide the output rating of the halogen bulb.

I'd take a look at the Black Diamond Icon. Brightest headlamp I've ever used.

I just discovered the Lupine light systems. The duo lights up about 10 feet around you with the LED and the spot is just that ... a spot about 10 inches wide and at a distance it's pointless. The only light on the market that is weather proof/water proof and bright like your asking is made by lupine.

I have owned 15 headlamps over the years. I currently own the Princeton Tec Apex. It runs on 4 "AA" and is the most useful and brightest headlamp I have ever seen. We go hiking at night and I bring up the rear of the line and with my headlamp on, no one else needs to use their headlamps. Very bright, long distance beam, waterproof casing and flood LED array option for when that single 3 watt 130 lumen LED is too bright. It sounds perfect for what you want to accomplish!

The halogen bulb on this thing is pretty sweet for lighting something in the distance and the 5 LEDs can make it seem like nearly daylight in your immediate surroundings. My roommate got one and I borrowed it on a remote bouldering trip and I wish I could afford one. It seems heavy but it isn't bad at all one you got it on your head. Luckily it uses AAs too because he says it didn't last as long as he had hoped. Also he claims the case is waterproof but I'm not about to jump in the river with it on quite yet.

I have a Petzel Duo LED 5 Headlamp that a bought a few years ago from backcountry.com. I also have a USAR helmet by Pacific. I'm looking for the clips that hold the light to the helmet. Do you sell them?

They don't. In general there aren't a lot of really small replacement parts available here. Check with Petz. They're great to work with!

This is a very good headlamp that will meet all your needs, but for long distance brightness you will be using mainly the xenon bulb. In that case, you could also go for the Black Diamond Icon, xenon +4 LEDs, for 40 dollars less. If you want maximum brightness all around though, this one is the top of the line.

They do now! http://www.backcountry.com/store/PTZ0186/Petzl-Duobelt-LED-14-Headlamp.html------------------------------------------------------------------More diodes doesn't necessarily equate to more lumens (brightness), and the definitely equal greater power draw. I'd seriously recommend the LED 5 if you think it'll meet your needs.Backcountry doesn't stock the Duo LED 14 lamp right now, but all of these guys should be able to help you.http://www.google.com/products?q=petzl+duo+14&btnG=Search+Products
