Gettin' Tibloc wit it

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I had the opportunity to try this kit out on the Matanuska glacier this spring (2015) in Alaska. It's a great kit, with everything you need to perform a 3:1 pulley rescue (z-pulley system). I would say that this kit is probably more geared for those that currently do not already own some kind of climbing pulley, ascender, and/or Micro or Mini Traxion or Prusik mending pulley. With that said, this kit can also be used to ascend a rope, if you are the one in the crevasse. By combining the Micro Traxion and the Tibloc, one can create a very efficient system for ascending a rope. I personally tried and practiced this method on the glacier, and I was over the lip in fewer than 5 mins. I'm by no means knocking the old fashioned Prusik system, because it really is very reliable, however, this system makes things very efficient, and for a beginner like me, I needed all the help I could get.
If you didn't already know, the Micro Traxion, the Partner pulley and the Tibloc are all great tools on their own. Combine them together, and you've got yourself a very strong system and one that weighs in at just under 13 ounces. I was particularly impressed with the Tibloc ascender. It's very efficient while ascending a rope, but it should be noted that it has the reputation for chewing up ropes. I would probably only use the Tibloc sparingly or for emergency rescue only. I think I'll be adding another Tibloc to this kit, just for ascending a rope in an emergency, because I found it very easy and efficient to use and place on the rope while hanging.
Again, overall I think this kit is great for beginners, or those that do not want to fuss with putting together their own kit. It could be used for a variety of applications, not only just crevasse rescue. I found that it was simple to use and set up and I'll definitely be using this on a variety of alpine climbs this year.

would a 30m rope be sufficient with this kit?

I think it would depend on the application of what you are climbing or traversing and how many are in your party or how many will be roped up to the 30M rope. This kit can be used on a 30M rope, not a bad question to ask, however, you will want to make sure the rope is at least 8mm in diameter and not bigger than 11mm in diameter. The reason for this is that the Tibloc is designed to be used on ropes between 8-11mm in diameter. I personally use a 8.3mm diameter rope, 30M long, and I and use this kit for my particular rope and crevasse rescue system. Cheers!

When will this be back in stock? It says more on the way but gives no definitive date, thanks.

Hey Stephen,

We don't get definitive dates either. It really boils down to how fast Petzl can get our order fulfilled. Now, since they are just down the road they are normally a little faster at getting us restocked than most but I wouldn't expect more until at least September.

Is the Micro Traxion that is included in this kit a different (more orange) color than the ones sold individually (gold)? Or is it just the way this photo was taken or something. Thanks

Your guess about the photos being off is true. Same item poor lighting on the images.

Hope this helps!
