A multi-position, retractable skeg on the Perception Essence Series Kayak adds stability on windy or choppy days, so this kayak tracks smoothly without feeling like it'll tip over if you sneeze. Perception knows kayak seats can be a literal pain in the ass to sit on for an all-day tour. So, they made this sea kayak with a comfortable, formed seat, an adjustable backrest and footrests, and padded, adjustable thigh braces. Bow and stern hatches hold your lunch and other gear, while the day-hatch gives you quick access to maps and sunscreen. Choose the 17-foot Essence for a roomier ride, or the 16.5-foot for lighter-weight, smaller paddlers.

Bottom Line: Add skeg stability and control to a sea kayak and you get the Essence.
