    Power transfer and hike-ability.

Most high-end mountain bike shoes sacrifice traction and walk-ability in order to provide maximum power transfer to the pedals. Not content with making this sacrifice in walk and hike-ability, the Pearl Izumi X-Project 2.0 Shoe delivers the powerful energy transfer of a fully rigid carbon-fiber soled shoe, without reducing its ability to grip over rough terrain and flex in the right places when you're walking over impassable trail obstacles.

What's the X-Project 2.0's secret to delivering powerful energy transfer without sacrificing traction or flex over hike-a-bike sections? Pearl outfitted this shoe with a full-length carbon fiber sole plate that's tapered to provide just enough flex when you're walking and hiking over trail obstacles and loose dirt surfaces. Run-shoe EVA foam placed under the heel dissipates impact and alleviates discomfort when you're hiking over craggy, rock-strewn trails. Co-molded rubber tips placed over hollow TPU lugs provide tenacious grip (for a cycling shoe, that is) without adding excess bulk or unnecessary weight. And since there's a full-length carbon plate, you'll still enjoy the excellent power transfer needed for rapid acceleration and quick uphill bursts.

The shoe's upper consists of a fully bonded synthetic material that forgoes seams along the toe box to eliminate hotspots and nasty pressure points. Strategically placed mesh vents promote breathability during warmer weather for enhanced comfort. Additionally, you'll appreciate the bi-directional closure, with micro-adjustable Boa reel for a dialed fit that evenly distributes pressure to alleviate uncomfortable bunching and pressure points.

    X-Stiff

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 43.5

The Pearl Izumi X-Project is a killer shoe for your trail oriented rider. I got these to be predominantly a cross shoe, but have found myself riding them more and more on my mountain bikes. I've done short shuttles and long, 25 mile, 4k climbing rides. These shoes provide great ventilation, an awesome boa closure eliminating all potential hot spots, and a pretty stiff sole. I will be going back to my FiveTen Kestrles for longer mtb rides to alleviate foot numbness due to the stiff sole, but the X-Project will get the nod for Road/Cross/XC Racing.

All in all a terrific shoe that I am happy to wear!

    Seemed to run small

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 46.5

This review is for fitment only, tried them on and walked around house without riding in them.
This is the first time ordering shoes online, and I was hesitant about not being able to try them on prior to ordering. I wear a size 12 street shoe and 46 in another major label. I went with the 46.5 and they fit snug, like they needed another 1/4 inch. They also seemed a little narrow, but that could be because they haven't been broken in. The material seemed comfortable and the BOA closure is in my opinion the best. I returned for a size 47. Will leave review once they arrive and I try them on. CC made the return process super painless!!

    Nice wide shoe.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large

I have some wide feet. I have tried Sidi Mega that never quite fit right. However, I am Very happy I got the Pearl Izumi X-Project and I highly recommend them! If you have wider feet, this shoe will work.

If you have any questions on this product, I will be happy to help you out. I am usually in the office Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday 11:30am-9:30pm you can request me on by phone (1.888.276.7130 ext. 4646) during those hours. You can also send me an email @ dmyers@backcountry.com at any time.

    Interesting

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 44

I guess it's a bit unusual to write a review about a returned product, so I will leave this as a few impressions. Fit is definitely on the small side, both overall and toe box width. I bought these for the concept of a stiff trail shoe that has some flex for walking, and it seems to fill that bill, however, after walking about inside for quite some time, the flex point and me never got along. It just seemed to break at a spot that was very uncomfortable for me, but might be perfect for others. One more point is that the soft rubber part of the tread is quite thin, and I think you'd be through to the hard plastic pretty quickly if you have to hike a bike a lot, but that is theoretical to some extent.
