    Mud-loving.

Sitting proudly at the top of Pearl Izumi's X-Project line, the X-Project 1.0 Men's Shoe features an efficient carbon sole and a streamlined fit, recommending it as a lightweight, responsive choice for 'cross or XC racers. If you're looking for a shoe that's tough enough for slick run-ups and rock-laced sections of trail but will still provide you with the power transfer you need when you're mashing in a final sprint, we'd recommend covering your feet with the X-Project 1.0.

One of the most notable features of the X-Project 1.0 is its carbon-plate sole, which Pearl Izumi designed with a tapered shape and some flex to adapt it to hiking and running while still allowing you to benefit from the rigidity and lightness of carbon when you're pedaling. The sole is reinforced by an outsole featuring molded rubber tips on hollow TPU lugs to lend the shoe enough traction to dig through mud, rock, sand, and any other challenging conditions you end up running your bike through during a race. The EVA foam heel takes a cue from cushioned running industry technology, helping to lessen the impact on your joints if you end up having to hike or run repeatedly throughout a long ride or race.

To set the 1.0 apart from the rest of the X-Project line, Pearl Izumi shapes the upper from its .9mm Second Skin synthetic. According to Pearl, is the thinnest upper available on the market. Its flexible fit conforms to a variety of foot shapes, making hot spots and pressure points unlikely with its use of heat-bonded, rather than stitched, seaming. Second Skin also allows for ample air transfer, helping to pull moisture from your feet and socks. The dual BOA dials give you extensive adjustability pre-ride or from the saddle, allowing you to achieve a secure fit that helps prevent numb feet in the middle of a trail.

    Low volume toe box!

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 43

Compared to Sidi Dominators and Giro Empire VR90, all size 43. I have narrow a** feet, so your mileage may vary. I DID NOT RIDE IN THESE SHOES, THIS IS TO COMPARE INITIAL FIT ONLY!

WAY better heel cup than the dominators - locks you in like a vise. The dual boa seems to give pretty good retention. Fairly narrow for the length, which is great, and snugs up nicely, but MAN is the toebox volume small! My big toes push into the top of the toebox enough that you can see the nail through the fabric. Not good. The full size jump to 44 made a big difference in toe box room, but also greatly increased width elsewhere. Too bad, these seemed like quality shoes otherwise. The Giros felt maybe a smidge wider midfoot, and had good heel retention, but I'd give the nod to the X-projects. Giros have the most volume in the toe box, sidis in between, x-projects way low. Sidis feel a bit snugger than both throughout the foot, but also don't offer as much pronation support (whether through footbed or structure - I think a bit of both)

Insoles are way better than the pieces of paper Sidi calls footbeds, but not as comfy as the Giro soles.

Overall, if they fit you, they seem like they'd be great shoes.

    Great Shoe

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 49

Really comfortable out of the box. Boa dials and design do a great job of distributing pressure. The sole does flex when walking but you don't notice that on the bike. This is the most comfortable MTB shoe I have ever used. I normally wear a size 14 shoe and size 49 is right on. And they look better in person.

    Total Comfort

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've really been impressed with my X-Project 1s. The carbon sole is stiff where you need it for pedaling, but has a noticeable flex when you're walking or have to hike-a-bike. The BOA provides an even, snug fit, and doesn't loosen like some velcro straps will over time.
I would call the fit true to size. I have the same 41 as I've worn in every other shoe I've had, that being said, I do have a hair less room in front of my toe compared to my Giros, but I chalk that up to personal preference. My pair of 41s with crank bros cleats weighs in at 700 grams for the pair.

    Awesome shoe

Love this shoe. The toe box is a little smaller that the SIDI shoes I used to wear so I had to buy an additional half size up but that wasn't a big deal. The dual boa closure is fantastic for getting the adjustment just right. The sole is really stiff but the shoe isn't uncomfortable to walk in and has a decent grip. Pretty cool looking shoes too IMHO.
