If the weather report can't make up its mind, zip up the Pearl Izumi Elite Barrier Convertible Jacket and ride through the spritzes, sprinkles, and showers. Pearl used its polyester Elite Barrier fabric to block moderate precipitation while preventing the clamminess that stems from sweat accumulation, and it included Direct-Vent side and chest panels to take the jacket's breathability to the next level. Elite Barrier is also effective against the wind, so you won't turn into an ice pop when you're pedaling on crisp fall days, and the front zipper of the Elite has an internal wind flap to prevent gusts from sneaking in through tiny gaps.

The Elite Barrier is more than just a jacket, though. Its zip-off sleeves pop off in seconds, so you can turn it into a vest for core coverage with increased ventilation, and they store easily in either the zippered hand pockets or secure back pocket. In addition to its eye-catching colors, this jacket boasts plenty of reflective detailing to keep you visible, along with a drawstring hem to seal out spray and drafts and a soft zipper garage to prevent chin chafe.

  • Elite Barrier water-resistant and breathable fabric
  • Direct-Vent side and chest panels
  • Removable sleeves
  • Zippered hand and back pockets
  • Internal wind flap
  • Reflective details
  • Zipper garage

I like it, but...

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

It is not very easy to change from jacket to vest and back. I use it as one or the other. Also, I have short arms and will need to have the sleeves altered before winter sets in. (I live in California so a light jacket is more than enough.) Not the fault of Pearl Izumi. I have to have all my sleeves altered.

Great all around jacket

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought this for a few reasons. First - visibility. Most if not all of my kits are dark or black. I ride a black bike. When I commute, I like the idea of having a bright yellow, reflective blob staring people in the face. Second, I ride in Seattle. I like the idea of some weather protection and a little added warmth. This thing isn't hot, but it certainly does keep body heat in a little and wind out. With the arms attached, full finger gloves, and long cycling pants, I've ridden comfortably at 39 degrees.

The other nice thing about the jacket is the ease of removing the sleeves. As a vest, it's very lightweight and cool while still keeping visibility. I use it when leading group rides so riders on the course can always know who the lead guy is in case they need help.

If there's a down side, it's that it's intentionally baggy. This isn't a bad thing, but when I commute, I try to push for PRs, keep speed up to a maximum, and drag to a minimum. This jacket does introduce drag. Don't try it in a race. Your amped up adrenaline and blood will warm you up, don't consider using this jacket for that purpose.

In all - a very wise investment.

Sizing was pretty accurate. I am 5'10", 155lbs, 39" chest, 32" waist. I ordered a medium and it's a good fit. I *might* get away with a small, but it fits through the shoulders and back, so that works well.

As for weather protection - this will protect you from light rain only. This won't help you in a monsoon. It's perfect for Seattle.

Perfect for a Canadian early Spring day

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Live in Calgary, Alberta & ride higher altitude trails often. At 8-10 degrees Celsius , with one layer beneath, this jacket is the cats meow.
Wind proof, ventilates and is light weight.
Sleeves zip off quickly and enhances flexibility for variable weather ! Well worth the $$ .

Great Jacket!
Great Jacket

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

This jacket had everything, zip off sleeves, weather adapting material and great style! The only reason it got sent back is because I received the wrong size. (my error, I don't know) We ended up giving the cash to the receiver and told him where to find it.

What is the center back length of a medium?

just as advertised

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I love this jacket! it is my first climate specific jacket. I've had it for a month now and wear it almost every morning. It does a great job cutting the wind at approx 20mph +, it shields minor rain very well. I have been riding in 40° temps. No problem with a light wicking long sleeve underneath. below 40°, I add another layer and i'm good to go. The sleeves flap a little on a fast downhill, but because it protects so well from the weather, it's not an issue at all. The fit is fantastic, the quality is terrific. It also folds up really small and fits into my tiny Camelback with ease. Money well spent. PS, I got the Screaming Yellow...and that describes it perfectly.
