From remote backcountry peaks to towering canyon ice falls, Peak Performance’s Heli Softshell Jacket shelters you from Mother Nature’s worst as it helps you redefine the limits of what’s possible. When you’re skinning up the trail, use the venting systems to stay cool as the switchbacks get steep. While you’re reaching up with your tools on the ice flow, you’ll be stoked that you still have access to your pockets. And wherever you are, you’ll be blown away by its waterproof, windproof and breathable soft shell fabric.

  • Softshell fabric with Gore-Tex 3L membrane is designed to optimize weather protection, user comfort, and freedom of movement by providing a waterproof breathable barrier that bends and stretches
  • Most other softshell fabrics are water resistant and can wet through over time, but with the Gore-Tex 3L membrane, this softshell fabric is waterproof—guaranteed
  • Two-way front zipper and underarm zips allow you to regulate your body temperature and adapt to varying weather conditions
  • Additional length in back improves coverage while you ski, climb, and mountaineer
  • Articulated sleeves provide additional interior room to further improve freedom of movement
  • Fixed hood provides additional storm protection and is large enough to fit over skiing and climbing helmets
  • Backcountry.com is the exclusive US retailer for Peak Performance products

Bottom Line: Gear up for the backcountry.

How do these jackets compare in terms of size to arc'teryx

How do these jackets compare in terms of size to arc'teryx jackets? I copared the two size charts, and these seem to be a little more fitted in the chest, but I can't make sense of the sleeve length measurements. Does anyone have any idea?

Sizing too big

By:
April 29, 2011

Hi guys, I bought this jacket to try the sizing and it turns out that the size small is way too roomy, sleeves are way too long, and also the overall length is too long as well. I own various Arc'Teryx, TNF, and First Ascent jackets and this is big compared to all of them. Needless to say, it is going to be sent back. The cut of the jacket also feels weird or a lil off as well. Other than those gripes, the quality seems to be good.

What is the diffeernce between this soft shell and the Gor TEX

What is the diffeernce between this soft shell and the Gor TEX Alpine jacket? They are both the same cost both are waterproof and breathable. I hike in the Rocky Mountains -- summers and winters I hike the Blue Ridge mountains in Virginia and NC. I do Day hikes and backpack. Am looking for a bomb proof shell and am not scared by the price. Your thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated.

Sounds like you want a hardshell, not a softshell. If you want one jacket, and are not scared by price, then check out the Arc'Teryx Alpha SV. It's Gore Tex Pro Shell, so it's actually a higher quality membrane than the one in this jacket, meaning it will breathe better, and it's lighter too. If you want a stretchy jacket, check out the Patagonia Stretch Ascent jacket, it's H2No, which is proprietary to Patagonia, but it's very breathable and a great jacket. It also won't cost you an arm and a leg.

AMAZING!!

By:

I'll say pretty much the same as I did on the Heli Softshell Pant review. Every year I shop for a jacket and pant and settle for mediocrity and sell it the following season only to repeat the process over and over again because what I want does not exist. That is, up until now. The Heli Softshell series is amazing.

I am 6'2", 195 lbs, slim waist(32/34 jeans), broad shoulders and long limbs. Went with XL on this jacket and fits excellent. I normally buy Burton AKs in Large because I find them to be a good fit with long sleeves and torso and not too boxy in the body.

Fabric is oh so nice. Soft/stretchy outer and great colors.

The interface between the jacket/pant works very well. Not too many gadgets/useless pockets like some other jackets. The back panel and shoulders have a slightly thicker grid of the softshell flannel, the rest is the usual lighter weight flannel. Only thing I would change is it has the mesh in the pit zips. WHY?? Its very light but I'll probably end up cutting them out...as long as it doesn't void the warranty, need to look into that.

Expensive, yes, and I am stingy with my money, but if something is right and worth it, I'll pay.

If you don't want the Gore Softshell, then go with the Heli Pro Shell. One main difference that isn't mentioned is the Proshell comes with a longer back/shorter front. The Heli Softshell is long in both the front and back.

Kyung,
I would suggest taking your sleeve and chest measurements and comparing them to the sizing chart (link is right next to the options pull down menu). I would guess that you will be a medium because these sizes are pretty small. At 5'9" 170# I'm usually a medium (occasionally a small) but according to these measurements I should be wearing a large.
I hope this helps.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how this jacket compares with the Heli Alpine jacket also from Peak Performance?

jch3666146,

Thanks for your question. Between the Heli Alpine jacket and the Heli Softshell jacket you are basically choosing between ingredients. The Heli Alpine jacket is fashioned from Gore Tex Pro Shell, where the Heli Softshell jacket is built from Gore Tex Soft Shell. You are going to get more freedom of movement, and a stretch function with the softshell over the Gore Pro Shell. Outside of that both are very comparable in feature sets, function, and weather protection. I hope this is helpful for you. Pray for snow.
