nice, but a couple of serious flaws

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

100 g primaloft, windstopper shell fabric. Nice! However... there are a couple of things that really p*ss me off about this product. The 'hand warmer' pockets are not insulated. The velcro wrist cuff straps are way too long (minor quibble). The inside chest zip pocket is a bit hard to use with one hand (minor quibble).
But the main problem is the hood. It is possibly the worst design for a cold weather hood that I've ever encountered. It's awful. The whole front of the face/head is totally exposed to the elements. It's too wide open, too low, and the various adjustment strings that you can pull on do nothing to fix it. You can never get this hood to really close in and envelope your face in warmth. Pulling on the two front string/tabs only pulls the top of the hood down over your eyes. The bottom area around the chin is too low and too wide. Cold air just streams down into your neck area. It's a cruel joke really... I think they might have been trying to provide better peripheral vision or something, but they completely over-compensated for that and delivered a hood that totally over-exposes the wearer to the elements.

Couldn't agree more with this review, you are spot on. I've encountered the same problems and now what can I do?! I feel like this jacket was a test model that should have never gone to the store.
A hood is so crucial, and this one will fails in the simplest way, it will not stay cinched down.
If you really want this jacket, I suggest seeing it in person and TEST THE HOOD.

A great ski touring layer

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I think this is one of the best jackets patagonia makes (or made)...it's simply my ideal layer for ski touring. I just throw it on over my softshell for the downhill...instant warmth and wind protection in a light jacket with excellent fit!

Pluses:
- Synthetic insulation is perfect for layering over, since if I have some sweat or moisture on my next layer, it's not the end of the world.
- Great fit -- not too long, and the gusseted cuffs are perfect for going over my gloves, but can easily be velcroed down to go under gloves.
- Just the right amount of insulation for cascades winters
- Great shell material -- robust, but not too heavy, with a nice soft hand.
- Sheds snow and light "snain" really well.

Great Jacket

I ordered this as a lightly insulated ski jacket. It has been great for spring skiing in Utah. It is warm and really light.

Light and Warm

Got the 2011 model for christmas this year and I really like it. Blocks wind supurbly, its very warm fro synthetic, a lot lighter than I expected, and looks great. I have not had any major problems with breathability, but i have noticed my wrists start to sweat at the cuffs- not sure if this is just me but overall a fantastic product

Toasty

I've used this jacket for the past 2 winters as my insulted ski jacket and have been pleased. It's windproof and very warm. It kept me toasty on a January ski trip in Jackson Hole for reference. I have been hesitant to really test its waterproofness since it's not marketed as being waterproofed but the DWR seems to work well in the light rain/snow I've had it in.
