This microfleece-lined softshell features recycled polyester fabric with a windproof laminate, and two hand pockets and an interior chest pocket for your MP3 player and chapstick. The recycled fleece lining moves moisture during hikes or cross country ski trips, and the smooth outer repels wind, water and light snow with ease. When you wear out your Leeway Jacket (in a long time), send it back to Patagonia to be reincarnated through the Common Threads Recycling Program.

This is definitely not in the same family as goretex and is not even an equivalent material. I would definitely consider this more of a windproof fleece.Hope that helps.

Bought this jacket because of the word "windproof" and "soft shell".
Though I like the material and it also seem to ward off wind, the zipper is a big let down. The second day I was wearing it, the zipper came open and it was really hard to push it down to unzip it. Yesterday it did again. Anoterh issue, sleeves are to long and no cuff or hem cord. At least they should have put a velcro or elastic to seal. Don't understand why Patagonia skimped on these little things.
I will probably go for Arcteryx only for a little more.

I concur with the zipper comments previously made. While it hasn't broken yet, it doesn't zip smoothly and just feels cheap. I won't be surprised if it goes sooner than later. Other than that, it's a great looking jacket and is perfect for mild southeastern winters.
