Puffy Perfection

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I have always been a huge fan of Patagonia products, and so it's no surprise that this jacket definitely did not disappoint. Not only is it one of the lightest jackets that I own (mere 8.9), but this down also kept me extremely well insulated. I've worn it for winter hiking, climbing days at the crag, and camping and backpacking trips. In extremely cold temps, I throw a hardshell over the top and it provides the perfect layering balance. It's so comfy that I even wear it around town just for the hell of it. The jacket is compact as well. On backpacking trips I'm able to stuff it in the included self-fabric stuffsack and throw it in with the rest of my gear. I am 5'3, 130 pounds with a shorter torso and the medium fit well and gave me plenty of room to layer. Overall, simply the best. I would highly recommend!

Puffy Perfection

What is the center back length of a medium?

I'm 5'3" almost 5'4" a 34D bust and about 138lbs. I have never bought jacket like this before so I am unsure if I should get a small or a medium. I don't want it to be too large where its swallowing me but I don't want it to be an extremely tight fit where it would be hard to zip up with another layer under the jacket.
Please help. -Jenny

Hi Jenny,

I'm 5'4'', a 34C and 140 lbs... I wear a medium in this one, and don't feel like I'm being swallowed up at all. I'd definitely go with the medium!

hi jenny, not sure if you've bought the jacket yet or not, but i've tried on both jackets in-store (their most recent line and cut). i'm 5'4" with a 34D or 36C (39" total) chest, also 140 lbs, and although the M fit better in length, I found that my arm mobility was limited reaching forward. I tend towards having wide shoulders, however, and size according to my chest size. So for Patagonia, it's usually a L. The L gives a lot more room for layering underneath, but is longer and a little baggier overall (particularly around the hips, but I have 37" hips). Reading reviews on the jacket, it sounds as though they've increased their length this season (not good for the more petite), but in past seasons, they were cut shorter (not good for the tall folks). In a M, with a lightweight base layer on under the jacket, it fit fine, until reaching forward. So it may depend on your activities. For me, I'd have to go with a L for function and the option to layer my R2 or Icebreaker 320 Arctic Fleece underneath comfortably without feeling constrained. But like my brother says, I'm 90% comfort, 10% fashion.

Great jacket, but...

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

The coral color of this jacket is gorgeous, BUT the black feathers inside the jacket show through to the outside and look like black grease spots all over the jacket! Even for $240, this is unacceptable. Not BackCountry's fault, but Patagonia should get their act together. Come on! Don't they look at the jacket before mass producing it? The jacket is still functional, just looks pretty bad.

super sorry you weren't psyched Molly. Patagonia does everything possible to ensure all white goose down, but inevitably a few dark feathers sneak through, and unfortunately sometimes they end up in the jacket in more obvious places that others and most of the Ultralight jackets turn out ok. Hopefully Backcountry took care of your return easily.

I'm 5'2", 119 lbs with 32B bust....

I'm 5'2", 119 lbs with 32B bust. I have a down patagonia jacket in size small, but I have not ordered a light down, and not sure if a small is a better fit or an XS? Reading the one and only review of a 5'7" 118 lbs and wears XS got me thinking and confused. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Hey Murry
I am a similar build to you (5'4" 32b and 120lbs)and I normally wear a small in Patagonia and since the fit is slim I would stick with the small. If you were to go with the XS then it would be really tight in the shoulders and chest. I hope that this information helps and please let me know if you have any more questions.

I second the small vote. I am a little bigger than you, normally a small in everything and sized up to a medium in this. Its really snug across the shoulders.

Light as a feather!

Hard to take this off it feels so nice!
Fits true for Patagonia.
I am 5.7 118 lbs with a 34 A bust and long arms. XS is a perfect fit everywhere but the sleeves for me so I usually size up to a Small in Patagonia jackets, little more room everywhere else with a good length in the sleeves, leaving room to layer underneath if needed.

Can someone post a picture of them wearing this? Curious how puffy it looks on an actual person

5'6" athletic build. 145lbs
wear the down hoodie jacket in Large but its loose and I was 155lbs when I bought it.
any thoughts?

Responded on

this is going to be a bit more loose than other jackets fitwise. it's a regular fit instead of trim/athletic. Personally I like a bit more wiggle room for layering but if you want a more streamlined fit, i'd say try out the medium! feel free to email me at if you'd like me to help you set up an exchange
