Great Jacket

Fits well, I'm 5'8 usually wear a 4/6. I ordered a medium, runs slightly small (I usually fit in smalls, but because of my height, I always have to order a medium). I will say that I would not want to wear a thick sweater underneath, but because this is such a light-weight jacket, I don't expect to wear bulkier layers.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

Loved the look, but runs small and fit like a petite (short, waist was on ribs). I returned for another name.

Hey Jilian,

Size small is going to have a 35 inch center back length.

Very nice

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

It looks nice and feels nice as well.
The size is just like shown and its very light weight which can be used even during summer.
Received not long ago so can't be sure abt how long will last but so far so good.

Very nice Shell

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I bought this jacket to use for winter and spring commute biking and camping. I have used the jacket here in Utah for winter biking and since its a shell I definitely layer under it, but soon realized that the shell is a lot warmer than I thought for biking which is great! Some features I really love are the inner zipped pocket I can use for my phone and music. I also really like the big outer snap pockets for my gloves or anything else that I don't have to worry about falling out while biking. There are hidden side pockets for the hands. The collar and hood are great for adjusting to what the weather conditions are going to be. The jacket is nice and long and the elastic gathered in the back is great for looks and functionality for keeping in that torso heat. Get this jacket while you can!

Great style. A bit dressier than other Patagonia rain jackets. After reading all reviews, I was very confused. I ordered it in size small and medium. The small would not accommodate layering. The medium was good. Still flattering but room for warmth. I am 5'4" and 130 lbs. and generally wear a size 4. I love the length....covers the rear end nicely!! A good jacket to wear in NY or overseas. Bottom line, go up a size if you will be wearing in a cool climate.

Would this jacket be suitable for layering?...

Would this jacket be suitable for layering? I live in a chilly, windy, wet-weather climate (England), and hoping to layer it with Patagonia's Fiona Ultralight coat. Thanks!

Best Answer Responded on

Lyndsay,
The Fiona would be perfect for a layer under the Torrentshell Trench. Just make sure you don't buy the Torrentshell here too small - if you're in between sizes - size up. hope that helps!

Responded on

The "Princess" seams will make for a more fitted garment...you would have to wear something with a slim profile under that won't add bulk, or cause you to overheat, as well. Look for something 'breathable'.

It's been non-stop raining here in my area, too, all season!

England...makes me think of Burberry/London fog!

What is the sizing on this. Does it run large, or small? I'm 5'3, usually wear a small but there are no smalls or mediums in the poppy red in the drop down list!

Responded on

Cassandra,
the Torrentshell Trench here tends to run pretty true to size. Looks like Poppy Red is out of stock for good, but I think an XS in the other colors might be an ok fit for you.

Long and lightweight

I bought this in part because I work music festivals in a mountain climate and have to deal with on and off rain in very warm weather, run around, sit on wet lawn or concert seats, and still manage to look put together. The length and lightweight nature of this trench is perfect for my purpose. As many others have noted, it is so light that it packs very small -- I can stick it in my purse, in fact, and pull it out again for the next downpour. The length allows you to sit on wet surfaces and also makes this jacket look urban/professional -- it's not a big sporty look. It comes to just above my knees.

I am 5'5 and 138 and bought the medium so I could wear a fleece or something similar underneath for warmth in the cooler seasons. It is roomy enough for that but still looks pretty form-fitting and almost tailored on. Now, in July, I can wear this over a tank or short sleeve tee in pouring rain in 90 degree weather and not get overheated.

Packable & Light

Haven't tried it in the rain yet, but it's breathable and easy to pack. Do wish it had a snap at the waist. I like this take on a traditional rain jacket - nice to have something a little longer and easier to wear in the city.

How long is this coat in size M or L? Your profile says the coat is waterproof, whereas the description says it's water-resistant. Explain.
How does one clean this coat?

Responded on

Margot,
I'll work on getting a center back measurement for you, but as for the waterproofing - the Torrentshell Trench here is completely seam taped and waterproof. It uses Patagonia's H2No waterproof membrane, and will keep all moisture out.

Patagonia Torrentshell Trench Coat

Absolutely love love my new "poppy fields" colored raincoat. Fits perfectly! So stylish, yet functional, which was exactly what I was looking for. Actually, I wasn't looking for anything at all that day, but somehow I have a great new coat.

Waterproof - Not sure

Although I own two of these jackets in Red and Black
because of the stylish design - I live in Southern California where it is a rare occasion when the weather even gets close to 50 degrees. In most instances, particularly at night it is necessary that I wear a wool sweater underneath for some degree of warmth. From my perspective, the Patagonia description was inaccurate to the extent where I even needed to use a water repellent to keep the rain from seeping through the jacket. My only reason for keeping these jackets is because I like them and I reside in a State where cooler weather and frequent rain is really not an issue.

Next time, look for a garment made of "*GoreTex" material. It is the absolute ultimate rain proof fabric on the market! Also keep in mind that unless otherwise noted, most all rain 'shells' are just that, a shell with no lining/warmth. Look for breathability, as well (which *GoreTex also has.
Good luck on your next real rain coat!

Great for football games!

Bought this raincoat in red for the 49ers v Giants playoff game where it rained almost nonstop. I laughed at the rain while staying completely dry under this coat! It is long enough to avoid getting your butt soaked when you sit on wet stadium seats. The hood is hard to manage but if you wear any sort of billed hat with it, the hood performs perfectly. To keep warm I layered this jacket on top of the full zip retool jacket and a capilene base layer with my jersey of course. I also wore P26 hiking boots and simple guide pants.

Write your question here...As I read the description, it states "water resistant"....I have been trying, and failing to find a spring jacket that will keep me completely dry. I walk dogs so have to go out in all kinds of weather. I wore my Canada Goose coat today as it was POURING rain, and I got home and my arms were pretty wet. Not comfortable at all!!!! Is this WATERPROOF, if not do you have a LONGER jacket that is.

It looks like this jacket has Patagonia's H2No coating. In my experience, the H2No serves as an excellent water barrier. Unless it's pouring cats and dogs while you're out with the dogs, I think this coat would serve you well. I have the standard length Patagonia Torrentshell and wear it all the time. I've only once noticed I was a little damp, but it was during an absolute torrential downpour. As for availability of other longer-length jackets with more aggressive waterproofing, I'm just not sure.

Cute dogs! The Torrentshell Trench is a great waterproof option, or the Tres Parka is the ultimate - fully waterproof, with a zip in/zip out down jacket. Either one will be great for your dog walks.

Responded on

Try looking for a jacket/coat that is made of "*GoreTex". GoreTex is the Ultimate water proof fabric, is also breathable, used by various manufacturers for great weather protection. You may need to layer, depends on the garment build.
Whichever brand you choose next time, just make sure it is made of the *GoreTex material (maybe size up so you can layer in cooler temps. underneath).
Good Luck on Your Quest!

Is the magenta the color it looks here? I saw it on another site and their photo made the color look more 'washed out' and murky. I like the vivid color as shown here.

Having seen this coat in the Portland, OR Patagonia store I can tell you that it appears to be a very vibrant magent, with a slight matte finish.

How waterproof is this trench coat?

Best Answer Responded on

This particular trench coat is designed to be 100% waterproof, and breathable. While Patagonia has not released the MVTR ratings for this particular jacket they have fully tested it, to a standard twice that of similar standards for military grade products. Having used quite a few Patagonia products myself I personally have a great deal of trust in their technologies.

Write your question here...I live in Seattle and really need something to keep me dry, but not overheated. Is the coat warm enough but not sweaty?

Best Answer Responded on

Hello Denise, the Torrentshell is a rain jacket. It offers no insulation. It breathes very well, but will offer no warmth. If you more warmth, I would layer this with a light fleece or light down jacket.
